But the system only see's it as 1GB total even in a dual card set up!

You will need a 2GB card if you want to play. I just ran into this same issue, but confused the message I got as "RAM insufficient" when it was "VRAM insufficient". Thankfully someone gave me 8GB of RAM and a GPU sufficient for the task. (3GB VRAM) The GPU was an afterthought, but turned out to be my issue not the RAM.

http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1549056-unofficial-will-my-pc-run-fallout-4-thread-8/ is not an official statement from Bethesda about which video cards will perform to what capacity - hence the 'unofficial' in the title of the thread. It's a thread compiled by many fans of the Bethesda games and is only a rough performance estimate that is mostly based on performance numbers in previous Bethesda games.

The only official statement from Bethesda regarding system requirements, http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1538430-fallout-4-release-info-including-pc-system-requirements/page-1#entry24363314.

I thing Fallout 4 demands a DirectX 11(+) GPU to operate as intented.

--------------

Multi-GPU graphics boards do not share memory banks, they are treated as discrete engines and are allocated individual resources for their operations as SLI clusters do !!!

Also a dual GPU works like an SLI internally. So each processor from your GTX 295 has only 896MB to operate with.

Meaning automatically you are below min. specs.

--------------

But there is a trick to get the game running on DirectX 10 graphics cards, but with a low framerate thus unplayable. For those who want to try it, here's how :

1. Download and install Windows SDK for Windows 8 : http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/desktop/hh852363.aspx ( this will also work for Windows 7 )

2. After the SDK installation go to your Windows System32 folder ( C:\Windows\System32 ), find and run dxcpl.exe

3. In the "Scope" section of the window, click on the "Edit List..." button and enter the location of your Fallout 4 executable ( Fallout4.exe ), then press the "Add" button and the "Ok" button

4. In the "Device Settings" section of the window, set the "Feature level limit" to "11_0" and be sure to check "Force WARP"

5. Press Apply/OK and there you have it. You can now start the game, but will probably not be able to play it because of the ultra-low framerate!

Other Information:

1. You can install Windows SDK for Windows 8 without .NET Framework 4.5. If you have .NET Framework 4.0 that will do just fine.
2. I've let all the main features to install.
3. This method will work if you fulfill most of the minimum requirements, except for the graphic card one (DX11 compatible gpu).

Also i do not know if it works on W10. !!!

So here's the issue with the Nvidia GTX 295: It has 1792 total VRAM -- however, each GPU has 896 MB, and the memory is mirrored between the two. That means that you have a video card with, effectively, only 896 GB of VRAM when it comes to meeting memory requirements. I'm sure it's just an oversight having looked at just the total physical memory cell count.

Kinda weird that this is how AAA games are these days.

Good graphics, about 20+ issues, most of them fixable with something relatively simple... But why didn't they just add in more options & solutions - say - when installing the game it gives people the option to tweek the graphics...

Oh idk. It really is up to the community who seem to care more then the devs.

Amazing times we live in.

Because on PC you need to consider literally THOUSANDS, if not MILLIONS of different configurations. So you concentrate on testing the most common ones because no company can afford to test every case. They probably get 80 to 90% of usable configurations and a percentage of the remaining ones also runs the game just fine.

Users trying to run this game on a very old graphics card like that are probably less than 0.1% of the customers. It just doesn't make sense to officially support that.

I hope you got it to work with playable frame-rates. As i said (in a different post i guess) the GTX 295 was a beast those days...

As i've test on my GTX260+ which has the same directx level as GTX295 using the Force WARP option, I got only 2fps with my machine. Which I believe the game was only software accelerated by the CPU(a Core 2 Quad 9400 running on 2.66G) but not the GPU.(And, I wrote my exprience on that thread, too.)

I'd be glad to know the fps you've got, and which CPU do you have on your machine, thanks.

Oddly enough, one of my machines is also a 260GTX with SLI, as well. My fps was also 2 or maybe even 1 fps. I was pretty certain it was only using the CPU as well, and not the GPU, but I figured either way, my computer is not up to snuff at this point.

Now that you're having similar findings, I'm not sure though, maybe we can eek out a playable 15 fps experience or something if it actually is an error not allowing us to utilize our GPUs.

My other machine has a newer 660 GTX that fallout 4 is working decently enough on. This Direct X fix worked for both machines.

because computers are not just one set-up, when making and testing a game, there are a nearly infinite amount of possibilities for a computer build. that list, in general, is not false, it was very possibly made with computers that did better at other parts of the

Do not blame Bethesda for you not having the minimum specs and not being able to play the game, that is entirely your fault. stop being a whiner and DO YOUR RESEARCH.

Wow. Alright, let's just back up here a moment. The issue isn't that FO4 isn't compatible with a dual-GPU card. This issue was just due to ignorance in how dual GPU's share memory. In the end, it's only your responsibility to understand your equipment, though, before making a purchase.

The moderators on these forums are just users like you and me. They're users and don't work for Bethesda.

I'm trying to teach you, in order to show you how you won't make a similar mistake in the future. Well, it's all already been explained for you. If you're interested in really learning where you made the mistake, which I strongly suggest you should be interested in, then review my posts again. If you have questions, ask away, and I'll be happy to answer them.
