And then the PC will have graphics a generation ahead of those consoles and we will be right back in the same boat as we are today.

No? Consoles are actually a bit ahead of the curve for 6 months and on par with PC hardware for a year before huge advances start to arise on the PC end.
I remember when I first got my 360 and I was blown away by Perfect Dark Zero's graphics. Now, even budget PC titles look better than that. Judging by the advancement of PC hardware since the last gen of consoles, to make a console with equal hardware would likely cost upwards of $700-800. I think the stagnation this gen may've actually really imbalanced things.
Well on release the 7800GTX was priced at $500 too and the PS3 was at $700. Did people still buy it? Hell yeah.
The only problem I see is fomr factor and power consumption, butI guess by the time nVidia Kepler comes around on 28nm dies some of that should be solved.
