NPC dialogue trigger issues

Post » Mon Jun 03, 2013 12:12 am

Hi all,

I seem to be having issues where if any npc is supposed to initiate dialogue with my character it doesn't occur. This can manifest in two ways:

1) In quests where control is normally taken away for a conversation the game enters a wait state. For example in "season never ending" the peace conference bugs out because dialogue isn't initiated with me. Similarly in "waking nightmare" when I enter the dream the two cultists just stand looking at me leaving my character stuck. The only fix in these circumstances is to enable player controls using the console and start dialogue normally.

2) NPCs don't approach me as they should do to start quests. Eg when I arrive in solsthiem the dark elf doesn't walk up to question me, and when I go up to the earth stone the dark elf there doesn't come over to start talking to me. This is sort of breaking immersion a bit as I have to talk to everyone to make sure I don't miss triggers.

This seems to be a fairly universal problem in the game. Anyone know what's going on? I've tried removing all mods already.

Cheers!

Quest events not being fired correctly or out of sequence can break things in game.

Like the time I sailed a certain Dwemer Airship to Solsteim before going by ship.

This introduced the same Solsteim error you mention because one of the initializing quest stages had not fired, and it buggered other things which were running.

In a perfect world, a player would not have to worry about this.

This is not a perfect world though, and such oversights do happen.

Save and save often, it gives you the ability to better diagnose what is fouling up, if anything.

Thanks for this.

Actually my impression is that this isn't an issue of triggering a single quest out of sequence as this seems to be happening anytime and every time a npc is supposed to trigger dialogue.

Unfortunately it has also been something I have become gradually aware of on my 160ish hour character. Therefore even if I do have a pre-glitch save it would probably be too far back for me to want to revert :-(

Anyone else got any ideas about a cause for a general problem of this nature?

Mods that change npc interactions? One that would change the minimum distance required so that npc deliver their lines to you, for example.

Hmmm... well this is frustrating.

I've tried disabling mods to no avail. However, going through my old saves it seems that things are fixed before a certain point. Unfortunately this point is ~100 hrs back in the game.

I've no real desire to play that 100 hrs again (life's too short, even for skyrim!), so it looks like this might be the end of my adventures if I can't find a fix... :-(
