NPCs And Population In TES:V

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 3:06 am

So if you can decide, what would you choose?

Note 1: By no personality/background also count npcs with no names but just "Beggar,"Mage Alchemist" or "Innkeeper".

Note 2: The last option with "Some NPCs" is only for merchants/inkeepers/guildmembers and such. Of course the npcs who is involved with the main quest will allways have personality or atleast a name no matter what.

Me myself take the third option. I feel that as long as shopkeepers, guildmembers and quest-related npcs has a background, then I could go with hundres of unimportant generic npcs in the cities and villages.

Obviously if Daggerfall had a generated name for every npc, there's a way to give every npc a name. I'd prefer Arena's method of meeting people though, where you have to ask who a person is to know their name. You should be able to ask them what they do as well. Fill out those towns with people.

It seems more than a little useless to require meaningful dialogue from every npc in the game, it's not like we're getting that from our current npc's. Asking for rumors is the same as asking for advertisemants.

There's always going to be static NPC's with detailed backgrounds because you need them for quests. For the rest though, bethesda can just make a large list of NPC names with levels and broad characteristics, and pretty much randomize which of them appear in the world, and which would allow new NPC's to appear when some of them die.
