NPCs reacting to weather

Post » Wed Mar 09, 2011 6:28 am

"Man it's hot out, maybe if the weather holds I'll close shop for a few days and relax."

No, I don't want an NPC to ever use the word 'man' in that way. This isn't modern day America.

I grew up in maine and i have never tried to escape the weather. I never huddled under anything so i wouldnt get wet and melt. I never understood it. but i have seen people do this in virgina, florida, texas, georgia and such so i guess it would fit. People go to the beach and swim soaking themselves then run for cover when a little rain comes their way cause they are getting wet. LOL its too funny to watch. the snow is even worse. lol I once saw someone shoveling snow with a spade. i saw one girl digging her car off with a childs pail and shovel. its just rich!! thanks for bringing back the memories... Oh yeah...

I would like to see the weenies who run for cover from a little rain or whatnot. it would be fun. good idea.

I Live in Norway and i don't try to escape snow, even not blizzards, i don't think being in SKYRIM the people there should care about a blizzard cause they are probably used to it... Your comment is so good i could give you a cookie. And also i come from Bergen in Norway wich is the city known for Rain... Wich means i don't escape rain... Considering this is like billions of billions of years ago AND on another planet, i think people shouldn't care about a little weather.
Btw here is you're cookie :) :cookie:

Dragon-scale umbrellas anyone?

... that give 90% fire protection! Oh, foresure! "Come forth oh scaled beast and let your foul breath be abated by this skin that I hath harvested from thine kin".

And this thread is a must! It would really add great atmosphere to Skyrim.

I think I spotted a few Oblivion AI packages where people would stay/go inside if it rained.

I don't know about the Norse, but I'm Irish and even though it rains for most of spring, autumn and winter... and summer come to think, I have met very few people who ignore the rain just because it's a common occurrence.

I'm from Virginia and don't avoid inclement weather. Then again I don't act like a pompous [censored] and disparage those who feel uncomfortable getting their cloths wet. Even more ridiculous is your derogatory attitude towards people removing snow from around their vehicle. I can only assume you've never held a job and don't understand the importance of having access to efficient transportation regardless of weather.

On topic though, it's be rather interesting to have NPCs actually react to the immediate context of their environment. I love rain in real life AND in videogames and would enjoy walking through a town in Skyrim watching people huddled under overhangs discussion business transaction while I stroll through the rain.

The occasional "Damn all this rain...." would be nice.

Maybe a Dunmer looking to the heavens, shaking their fist, and exclaiming "YOU N'WAH!" would be appropriate

how bout some children having snowball fights? or splashing in the rain puddles? probably to much animation to have to deal with that would remove the devs from working on more important stuff.

 ....Oh how interesting. A 'this makes immersion better' thread......

Just for the record, an idea doesnt have to relate to immersion to be a good one. Just say your idea. Leave immersion out of it. Its really corny.

I like your idea and it adds to the believability of the world. But it does nothing to help me become immersed.

I laughed quite a bit at this. Adding believability to the world is one of the cornerstones of immersion... yes the word is overused on these forums, and doesn't quite mean what its dictionary meaning states when its used here. But it happens often that colloquial meaning is infused into terms in communities that focus on specific topics such as this one. "Immersion" isn't a "corny term", its shorthand for saying exactly that it "is more believable". If the actors behave in ways that real beings would be more likely to behave, it's "immersive" by this forum's take on the word. The primary desire "immersionists" have is not to add more things that bring immersion, but to AVOID things that break it. NPCs walking into walls, jumping 20 feet, standing in a downpour with a blank expression on their face, etc are things that instantly remind us that the actor isn't real. Of course you aren't going to "completely believe" that its not a game, it is a game, but the more that this constant reminder can be limited, the more solid the game is. Its funny the word "corny" was used to describe the word "immersion", because its really the opposite... something that is corny is immersion breaking, and immersion wishes are about wanting corny things removed and fixed.

If you can't believe something it makes it difficult to feel immersed. I don't see how it could be 'corny' to suggest things that don't make players go "wut?" to the game. Sure, an idea doesn't have to be related to immersion to be a good one, but that doesn't mean that ideas related to immersion should not cite that immersion.

That said, actors reacting to weather would certainly be great for immersion, and yes, that is a good thing.

Yes. As someone put earlier in a more derogatory and non-contextual way, many people run for cover from weather. The sudden energy that people gain during a rainstorm is both exciting to see and amusing. Just imagine any time you've been out and a rain suddenly starts up. People immediately go from a lackadaisical gait or stance to running with quickened steps from cover to cover. It is fun to watch such industry being used on something as simple as foot transportation between relatively short distances

This thread is lacking immersion. I'll make another thread about it so we can discuss how we can make it more immersive.

On the main topic, heck yeah I'm all for it. I mean, independant of constitution or customs, I find it hard to believe anyone would face pouring rain without even shuddering.

 I really miss that old dunmer voice. I really hope it returns to Skyrim. I also would like a healthy dose of their curses.

That was just an example. I'm not personally from Nirn so I don't know all of their slang and dialects. But really? You don't like the idea of NPCs being able to comment and remember previous weather because I gave a bad example of dialog?

Here I've been walking around that believability = immersion. If the world is believable it's immersive, no?

I really like the idea OP, hope it's added! The NPCs could be talking about the weather too! (heh). "Damn this snowstorm, been going on for days" "-Least we got more time to drink mate!"

And different reactions for different races. Khajiit and altmer would run for cover as fast as possible while argonians, nords and orcs just don't give a damn.

I compeltely agree. They could add the minor effect in Morrowind's ashstorms and blizzards, why not this in a game almost 10 years more advanced?

It's disturbing....either you actually have a sense of humor, or you actually don't understand the basics of human behavior since the dawn of time.

How puzzling.

Aren't you a badass. No cookies for either of you, nothing for your commentary that has no relation with basic intelligent human behavior. Freaking cavemen understood getting out of the weather, so why wouldn't everyone else since them do the same?

Ever had your parents tell you not to go outside in one of those blizzards? Hmmmm, I wonder why....probably becasue they can and absolutely have KILLED people.

Ridiculous....I can't even give more examples, because this is just silly.

One question, though. Where the hell did you get the idea TES takes place BILLIONS of years ago???? :lmao:
