NPCs reacting to weather

Post » Wed Mar 09, 2011 1:11 am

I apologize if this has been discussed before, but anyone up for weather reactivity? It did wonders for immersion in The Witcher and Grand Theft Auto IV (and others), so it would be quite nice to see NPCs make an attempt to escape the weather by hiding under overhangs or the like. Any takers?

Oh, and before anyone says anything, the topic titled "NPCs should react better to their environments" is unrelated.

Would be awesome, seeing people trudging through snow-storms huddling themselves or covering their face, trying to find cover, similar to how people reacted to Ashstorms in Morrowind but more expanded, yeah.

 ....Oh how interesting. A 'this makes immersion better' thread......

Just for the record, an idea doesnt have to relate to immersion to be a good one. Just say your idea. Leave immersion out of it. Its really corny.

I like your idea and it adds to the believability of the world. But it does nothing to help me become immersed.

I grew up in maine and i have never tried to escape the weather. I never huddled under anything so i wouldnt get wet and melt. I never understood it. but i have seen people do this in virgina, florida, texas, georgia and such so i guess it would fit. People go to the beach and swim soaking themselves then run for cover when a little rain comes their way cause they are getting wet. LOL its too funny to watch. the snow is even worse. lol I once saw someone shoveling snow with a spade. i saw one girl digging her car off with a childs pail and shovel. its just rich!! thanks for bringing back the memories... Oh yeah...

I would like to see the weenies who run for cover from a little rain or whatnot. it would be fun. good idea.

Difference:

Going to Beach - Beach specific clothes, going there with either the intention of getting wet or knowledge you may get wet.

Running from cover in rain - Might have someplace where they need to look good (being dry in a business meeting helps), valuable clothing, materials damaged by water, etc.

I will walk through a light drizzle but if it's a downpour and I'm outside for a reason other than 'singing in the rain' I have an umbrella or raincoat. It isn't about being a 'weenie', it's about being smart in regards to the weather.

Edit: Oh yeah the topic... Good idea.

Edit again: Trying to be nicer.

I believe there was even a script in Oblivion (or at least it was advertised before release) that would make NPCs go under cover if it was raining. But the rain and snow in Oblivion were just on screen animations, you were the only actually experiencing the snow or rain, and this made the script useless. I believe they have fixed this in Skyrim.

It did wonders for immersion in The Witcher and Grand Theft Auto IV

I find it hard to be "immersed" in a 3rd person game.

In Oblivion, NPCs do take shelter when it is raining. If this behavior exists in Skyrim, It would be cool if there are new animations to make it more obivious.

From the http://uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Bugs#Rain_Through_Roofs:

Rain Through Roofs
Rain will fall through covered areas outdoors as if the cover was not there. This renders pointless some of the beggars' AI that causes them to stand under shelter when the weather is wet.

Exactly, the only thing they really did was stay home or at an inn. It would be cool to see them move in a light jog, maybe hold their arms over their heads, maybe even a book. I personally think it would be a lot better if we got some dialog too. On a stormy day when you are leaving the inn the innkeeper says "Careful now, it's wet out there, don't slip and hurt yourself." Or on a really sunny day someone says "Man it's hot out, maybe if the weather holds I'll close shop for a few days and relax."

If you can't believe something it makes it difficult to feel immersed. I don't see how it could be 'corny' to suggest things that don't make players go "wut?" to the game. Sure, an idea doesn't have to be related to immersion to be a good one, but that doesn't mean that ideas related to immersion should not cite that immersion.

It was rather nice to see people actually try to get out of the rain in the Witcher, even if it didn't actually help them stay dry with the rain falling through their cover...

So yes, it would definitely be nice to see NPCs react believably to weather, but they also NEED to fix rain falling through objects. It might have been acceptable back in 2006, but needing to put out with it in a 2011 game is just sad.

If they did this in Oblivion as well, then I certainly didn't notice it.

Maybe every single NPC is trying to be a BA or pretend they don't notice it's raining. maybe Nirn's culture never developed the aversion to being rained on (i.e. some basic behavior just doesn't get invented a la The Invention of Lying lol maybe they are all aliens like in http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0133751/
