NPCs stealing from my house !

Post » Sun Dec 11, 2011 12:40 pm

It's a bug.

Everytime you enter a house, things that you place on shelves, desks, etc will end up on the floor. Most of the time they are 1 ft away.

This kind of svcks in Whiterun i've had items knocked into the firepit. It's impossible to retrieve items out of it, and that's probably what happened to you (or something simalair... fell through world).

You're da man !
It had indeed ended up in the open firepit.
That thing being a glass jar it had completely "blended in" with the glaring fire, and would've been virtually invisible but for the wing flapping butterfly inside it.
Oh, and i DID manage to retrieve it.
So, tyvm !

Why don't you just lock your house then...? ~ lock after pointing cursor at the door - problem solved...

Have none of you actually seen theives at night breaking into houses? Ive seen 2 thieves so far, one broke into the Riverwood trader and spotted the 2nd as he was running from guards in Riften (irony)

Can't knock them out with a little FUS! action?

Ugh not this again :( the same thing happened in Fallout 3 with the cupboard near the front door. There is a console command to /setownership (or something like that) that changes the owner to you. This stops the NPC's from touching it is they will no steal owned items.

Edit:

I believe you can also do this with your front door too. (from the outside)

Let me guess, someone stole your sweetroll. You ever hear guards say that? I'm betting it's a reference to this AI problem.

The thing is, I've only seen NPCs enter my house when they're standing next to me as I transition. It seems like it's part of the transition bug teleporting people with you. Not people breaking into your house. Locking the door would have no effect.

i believe that it's a reference to a line used by kharjiit in morrowind
- i'm pretty sure they're only supposed to say it if you're a kharjiit

regarding missing items, i think it's much more likely that it's a physics bug or coordinate bug than AI stealing it

i.e. the jar is probably floating around a mile away in the void area of the interior world space that your house occupies

I think it would be cool if NPC's stole from me as long as there was some way to track them down like a guard or witness telling me who did it and a compass icon showing me where they are so I can go get it back. It would be a nice dynamic feature in the game.

Check around on the floor. I noticed a lot of times when you first place something it gets repositioned where you dropped it or somewhere nearby the next time you enter your house. Place it again and it stays. Very strange bug. :brokencomputer:

Make friends with the Thieves' Guild. As a general rule, thieves can't steal from other thieves and I think that might be the problem. I also seen a thief break into the Riverwood Trader at around 2:00 am, so I think it may be a random occurrence.

Why a thief would want to steal a helpless butterfly in a jar, to me, is unknown.

Glad I found this thread! I placed the Book of Fate on one of the desks in my house in Windhelm. Came back one time and it was gone. I was so mad because it's a unique book. Now I'll have to look in the firepit!

OK, I had a Dwarven War Axe of Flames, I put in the nice rack in my house in Whiterun and it was missing as I stated in my above post. I probably would not have noticed it except some letter arrived for me about this axe and someone wanted it. So, after looking in all my containers in both houses, I knew the thing was missing as I had not sold it (I spawned money so I don't need to sell anything). Well, the quest giver thought I had it in my inventory and he "took" it from me and rewarded me.

If it was a quest item, surely you shouldn't have been able to place it in the rack in the first place?

@OP: Spend a few nights hidden in your house waiting for the thief... then when he/she/it comes in to pilfer your hard earned stuff... STRIKE!

lol off topic and nooby but, where can you get the butterfly in jar?

Alchemist cabin...somewhere.

There are at least two others: A bee in a jar, and a dragonfly in a jar.

I prefer the firefly (or what ever it's called) in a Jar

This.

I'm glad to know there might be people pilfering my junk. I'm going to hide my bug collection now. :P

Way earlier than that, try Arena.

While in town the baker gives you a sweetroll. Delighted you take it into an alley to enjoy, only to be intercepted by a gang of three other kids your age. The leader demands the sweetroll, or else he and his friends will beat you and take it. Do you:

a. Drop the sweetroll and step on it, then get ready for the fight? (Warrior)
b. Give him the sweetroll now without argument, knowing that later this afternoon you will have all your friends with you and can come and take whatever he owes you? (Mage)
c. Act like you're going to give him the sweetroll but at the last minute throw it in the air, hoping that they'll pay attention to it long enough for you to get a shot in on the leader? (Thief)

It's a bug.

Yep. And it's in a jar. :hubbahubba:

@Qilue: It was in Fallout 3 as well; during your birthday party, some bullies demand your sweetroll.
