NPCs

Post » Fri Oct 15, 2010 11:49 am

I searched for a Female chars thread but they're all locked, and this is sort of a different issue anyway.

We all know that there won't be any female PCs in the game, but I've seen mention of "escort/rescue civilians" missions, which would lead me to assume there's at least going to be a minimal element of NPCs in the game. Does anyone know if it's been confirmed that there will/won't be any female NPCs, either? I understand the work and character modeling it would take to have included customizable female player characters in the game, but it seems possible that having a few different female NPC models wouldn't be such an involved task, or much of a drain on resources.

I still think it's more effort than it's worth. NPC's aren't a huge deal in the game anyway, they're just something to add a sence of urgency and add immersion as well as add a new thing to get experience from.

They already had female models for characters before they scrapped the idea, so I wouldn't be surprised if they included those models as NPCs.

Yeah, it would make sense. I can buy an all male war, but not the idea that only men have survived a world-wide catastrophe :P

Hmm, fair point. I hadn't thought of that. Either way, I wont be too devistated if it doesn't.

No, it won't change the gameplay any. It will just spur on a lot of "don't-drop-the-soap" jokes.

Are female NPC's a necessity? No.
But it's really going to make any story that might be developed during the course of the game feel extremely unrealistic.
Not that this game is shooting for realism (ie: the faces of the characters).

and with female npc's in it would more change to "fighting over women" jokes...

so irregardless of which you do jokes and innuendo will ensue. it is merely a matter of which you prefer/find more amusing. personally i think there would be far more amusing situations with the "fighting over women" situation than the "don't-drop-the-soap" but meh. that's just me.

I just added that comment for comic relief. Really it's indicative of a larger issue- to what end is the future worth fighting for if there's no way to perpetuate the species. Also, I think I've seen Shadowcat mention that the refugees have been on the Ark for 40 years. Clearly some of the characters we've seen are under 40 years old. How were they born?

It would just create story holes, which was sort of my point when making that crack. I didn't really intend to get into a debate over it.

i was aware of your intent. most of my post was merely sarcasm... unfortunately there seems to be no reliable sarcasm-text translation barring use of [/sarcasm] which i don't like to use as it defeats the purpose of using sarcasm in the first place... in general however, unless stated otherwise most things that i post are sarcastic in nature... hmmm maybe i should add that to my sig... would result in less confusion methinks.

I think having female NPC's but not female PC's would lead to some "weaker gender" sixism argument, anyway.

Yea and those arguments would be started by people that don't know why they couldn't put female PCs. So all of us who've been following Brink long enough to know how to explain why this is then I don't think that would be as big of a problem. They might be started by sixist people too, because they're [censored]s.

It's funny, because then said people question why they are single. (at least if they're serious)

Well, it would be joining a long, long, long list of games where that was case, and yet the world still spins on.

I'll be making lots of those....... But seriously, I don't want Container City to be a sausage fest. Especially since we resistance live there.......

Or simply they are too valueable to be common cannon fodder.

Yes, I believe there will be citizen NPC's. I heard that somewhere. Female NPC's? I have no idea, but probably not.

Yes I'm pretty sure there are female NPC's, it'd be a little odd if the Ark was only filled with males

Whys this such a big deal, theres mang games where there are no woman, we know that they couldnt inkude woman, doesnt mean they dont exist, there all hiding somwhere.... i guess the only way we can stop these debates is...if we create a new species that has neither man nor woman...,

I think that's it's a game and it shouldn't matter so long as the game is good.
