NRC/House/Independent less satisfying than Legion?

Post » Sun Aug 29, 2010 9:58 pm

So I have beaten to game 5 times. Once on House, twice with NCR, and twice on independent. Just a few minutes ago I beat it while siding with Caesar's Legion, and I have to say this...I feel like the Legion's quests were much better, the characters and lore were more interesting, and the ending was much more satisfying than the other three options.

First of all, you had characters like Caesar, Lanius, Vulpus, tales of The Burned Man and even Lucius(sorta), all with their own unique backstory. Their characters were much deeper than anything I ever saw while siding with the NCR, they had better personalities, and they had much better voice actors. Every person I met in the NCR was the same thing...Corporal, or Major such and such, with no standout characters at all.

Assassinating the President was much, much more fun than protecting him. Just taking out a sniper, a mechanic and then waiting for the speech to be over? Please, dressing up as an NCR Trooper, sneaking in and taking out the president, and walking off like a boss was a lot cooler. The ending? Much better on the Legion side, sure Lanius was a much better final boss than Oliver, (Obviously), but infiltrating the Hoover Damn, fighting Power Armored Soldiers and Veteran Rangers galore made for a much better final battle. The main reason being because taking something over is much more fun than shoe-ing some soldiers away like in the NCR ending.

So regardless of whether or not I agree with the Legion's ideals and methods, playing through that side of the story made for a much better experience. Anyone else agree?

I could do the final battle with cl right now. I decided Ceaser would want me and Veronica with ed e stationed as a surveillance drone to take out camp golf and mc carran. and the NCR embassy on the strip. Ceaser just forgot to tell me this.

I do like working for Ceaser better, because there are not as many story overlap flaws. I have only ran into 1 while doing cl.

It makes me mad that I can kill 150 ncr soilders, but they won t shoot me on sight until a pop up tells me they will.
So yeah I like working for cl. They pay better too. Those drop boxes are no joke. Ceaser is a good character....... very well done.

I wish I could buy spears and cl armour. I was also hoping that when I turned in 100 NCR dog tags I d get centurion armour. They needed a few more quests. I haven t met Lanius yet as a cl character. That should be good.

You can get Legion armor in the Legion Safe House (After the patch)

You can also get the chainsaw, which is one of the best melee weapons in the game.

Aside from the lack of side quests with the Legion, it was my favourite main story playthrough.

They haven t given me a safehouse key. I think its because I switch in and out of cl armour so much. If I take it off Im idolized, but with it on it keeps setting me back to neutral. I got a bunch of cl armour from one quest that delt with the Van Graffs. I won t run out, but they have no official vender is what I m getting at.

Take the armor off and talk to Lucius. If he doesn't give it to you, exit the convo and talk to him again.

I ll try that, but I m just about ready for the final battle. Is there centurion armour in there? If not I ll just stick with the legion vet armour.

You know what's satisfying? Doing the NCR playthrough all the way up to the dam and then assassinating Kimball yourself, in full view of everyone, with Knock-Knock.

I find Mr. House's ending the most satisfying ending of all the game endings personally. It's fun to dupe Caesar into thinking I'll serve the Legion like any other whipped puppy only to upgrade the Securitrons, then I never see him again, to play coy like I'm any other do as you will NCR flag lover, only to make the final Coup De Grace when I force Oliver into signing the terms of surrender. Being an agent is so much fun :disguise:

I originally was going to go with house, but the I thought about the democratic NCR, then I saw the legion and met Boone and heard his story about his wife. I killed many legionares after that, but once I learned of cesar's structure and plans I knew he had a vision of a human race that picked itself up from the brink of annihilation and wasn't afraid of doing some dirty work. Watching men charge lines of riflemen with a fire axe convinced me even further. I'd prefer ceaser over lanius though because one is a visionary leader, the other is a bloodthirsty lunatic.

I was REALLY dissapointed when I unmasked Lanius and he didn't have any burn marks or scars like the story Caesar told me.

Yes-Man's my favourite end-game scenario by miles and miles, since it offers the most freedom. It'll accomodate me no matter how I approach the various factions and quests, and I love the potential for scheming and politicking it offers. I get to shape the Mojave myself, which is infinitely more fun than being ordered about by House/Caesar/NCR.

Also, on a practical level I don't like the Legion endgame at all, 'cause you keep having to flog all the way back to the Fort for your assignments. Ditto NCR and Hoover Dam.

YES MAN???????? You put him in and he tells you what to do. Yes man should be removed from the game. I think yes man pissed me off more than anything else in the game, and a lot of stuff pissed me off.

I did the cl ending. It was quite a bit harder. Main reason is because I was not fighting cl. lol

On a side note throw on some cl vet armour and go into the Resort in Camp Golf after the vets show up on hard/hardcoe.

Talk about getting destroyed. It makes dead wind cavern look like a cake walk. You are dead with in 30 seconds everytime.

It is the nastiest .50 cal, /brush gun/ranger 45/70 pistol cross fire ever. Im not sure if I can kill them. They won t come outside either.

They stay in there no matter what. It has to be the hardest thing in the game by far.

Yes, Yes-Man. Unlike the others, he lets you exercise a bit of judgement yourself. He tells you to get out there and meet the various tribes, but it's up to you what you do about them. Uniquely, he follows your orders ("You colluded with the Omertas to attack the Strip? Well okay, it's your call! That'll take the Strip down a peg or two!") as much as you have to follow his.

Technically, the entire game is that way. If you are helping a faction, it is because you have judged this to be the right choice of action. Lord knows why anyone would help the Omerta's attack the strip though if you're doing the independant route.

Eh, for me picking sides in the endgame is more about trying out the different quest-lines than it is about doing the right thing. None of my characters really worked with Caesar or House out of principle, they just wanted to see how the different scenarios played out.

Lord knows why anyone would help the Omerta's attack the strip though if you're doing the independant route.

In all honesty, only because I'd never done the Omerta's quest that way round before, I'd only ever helped Cachino. And also, I wanted to see what Yes-Man's reaction would be.

(The gamer in me rides roughshod over any narrative considerations, it's terrible, but I'm afraid I just don't care enough about the story. For me, it's just a means to an end, rather than the end in itself.)

Anyway, moreso than the others the Yes-Man route makes me feel like the master of my own destiny, which is why it's my fave by far.

Im taking about the use of Houses securitrons. After those factions you can not tell him a single thing. You have absolutely no control over yes man he controls you. He is an utter abortion. I can t stand ever seeing the name. I like cl more than yes man. At least cl are what they are advertized as. Yes man fools the player into thinking they ll be able to use the securitrons at the dam, but no he runs Houses end game program and you have no say in the matter.

When I got fooled by yes man my first playthrough I almost broke the game. dumb.

This is all super-spoilery really.

After those factions you can not tell him a single thing.

The factions are a major, major chunk of the game. And even beyond them, he's programmed to agree with you. If you so desire, you can do the opposite of what he instructs you to do and he still has to say it's a good idea. Wanna upgrade the Securitrons or not? Entirely up to you. Wanna take the Dam or blow it up? Entirely up to you.

Yes man fools the player into thinking they ll be able to use the securitrons at the dam, but no he runs Houses end game program and you have no say in the matter.

You do use the Securitrons at the Dam, they fight with you. Or do you mean the actual ending? 'Cause I'm not bothered about that at all, I don't care. Game's over at that point. It's the route to the ending I care about, and Yes-Man's is the most satisfying by far.

I'm working on my House playthrough at the moment, haven't gotten to Yes-Man yet. I would have to say that the NCR story is pretty bad although I agree with their ideals and beliefs the most, mainly because of lack of depth in characters. There was absolutely no back story to any of the generals except for the final one you talk to, which she mentions she dislikes the Brotherhood of Steel. Thats it for backstory with them. And could you even name one of the generals besides McNamarra? I can't. XD

Now, Caesar's Legion is the polar opposite. The character I was using was not suited for their play style, which I believe to be Melee, and I didn't agree with their ideals. I think if you really immerse yourself in the game, this is pretty important and can make the game a lot better. They did have better characters though, and Caesar having a weakness was a great touch. The first time he spazzed out while talking to him I thought I ran into some horrible glitch and was pretty worried, but then the truth came out and really added to the background.

Now for House, not only do I agree with him even though he is kind of a dike, but he also has some backstory which is nice. One thing I dislike is how strong headed he is, not allowing you to talk the BoS into helping you. Now, I haven't completed his playthrough so I can't say much so far, but I'd have to say I'm enjoying it the most out of all that I have done. What Yes-Man has in store will be revealed in a little while.

I agree, My Legion playthrough was by far my favourite. Melee/Unarmed build using no chems, eating only food. It was great. Just wish it had more content though. :sadvaultboy:
