As nub as they come, I step in...

Post » Mon Oct 11, 2010 3:07 am

So, like it says, Im as nub as nub gets when it comes to this "Forum" & Posting stuff. Near clueless, but not helpless. I was having trouble doing/setting up the whole "Avatar" thing. I thought I was using a correctly sized pic but then I couldn't figure out which type of link to use? (Why is there even more than 1? Seriously.) I'd appreciate it greatly if someone wouldn't mind helping me out. ((BTW. I was trying to link a pic from Photobucket.))

You want the "direct link" ie, the one without any [IMG] tags or anything, just the URL.

Make sure it's a direct link and that you don't have an extra http:// in the url.

Also, it would help a lot if you would post the url you're trying to use. :)

Perhaps reading the http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/724862-forum-rules-and-general-information/page__view__findpost__p__10470712 would help?

I'll describe in detail what all the url types are, just so you know.
*The first one, "direct link", should be the only one you need to be concerned with right now. Basically if you copied and pasted that into the address bar it will take you directly to the image. So as the name suggests it "directly" links to the image.
*"HTML code" is for if you wanted to add the picture to your own website, you would copy and paste that into your HTML document somewhere and it would show up on the page.
*"HTML thumb" is the same only it shows up as a thumbnail that you have to click on to see the full image.
*"IMG code" is for posting the image on a forum. You would simply paste that into the post and it would show up as an image. However these forums don't allow posting images in posts so keep that in mind.
*"IMG thumb", same as "HTML thumb" but for posts.
*"Flash code" I think is for websites. You would post that in an HTML document and the image would show up as a flash presentation. Useful I guess if you don't want people copying the image.

Or check my short-guide "adding Avatars on BSF for dummies":
- Go to Settings - Profile - Change Avatar
- Go to Photobucket (since you use that), select the picture you want to use as an avatar
- Hoover the arrow over the picture, then a menu with 4 links pops up.
- Click on the right of "Direct Link", and select with CTRL-C
- Insert the copied link into the box underneath "Enter a URL to an online avatar image" in the Change Avatar menu.
- Click on "Save Changes" button.
And there you have your new Avatar ready to be seen by all logged in BSF members.

I'd like to say, "Thank you very much", to those that gave me feedback and possible solutions. As it turns out, Exorince had the golden ticket. My nub-ism was copy & pasting an extra "http://". So again, Thank You to Exorince, and to the others who gave me their insight. I hope this nub-icity wears off quickly & soon.

Yeah, though it svcks how your avatar is three times the size for the Forum's allowance.

Are you suggesting that I feel bad for them allowing it, for whatever their reasons may be? Or was that just your subtle way of showing jealousy? Either way, "Its only a foul/penalty if they blow they blow the whistle."

ie. So far, so good.

I wouldn't risk it. I don't think it will take long for the moderators to catch on. They may just ask you to change it but if they know you did it knowing it was against the rules they may give you a warning.

Just remove it, you won't get away with it. My last avatar was maybe 1kb over the limit and they sniped me. Not gonna lie, it was pretty impressive that they caught it when I didn't.

Be aware of your file size. I had to adjust my avvy's dimensions accordingly in order to accommodate the file limitations. My majestic gold dragon is a wee baby.. ain't he cute? :P

I think the OP's issue was resolved. I resolved the avatar size issue :D So I think we're all done here. :)
