nVidia 8800gt & Morrowind Cell Transition Crashes

Post » Thu May 26, 2011 9:12 pm

It's been suggested that my CTDs that occur every couple of minutes, mainly when exploring land like Bitter Coast, are likely to be cell transition crashes and that I should ask here about whether my GPU settings are wrong.

I'm running nVidia 8800 GT in Windows XP SP2 OS, not currently overclocked due to recently being replaced (I hope not just cleaned up and returned) after burning out from dodgy fan giving up (within weeks of buying it). So all standard factory settings.

Just tell me what figures to provide and where to look and I'll provide :-)

For the GPU, I'd at least start off with the basic settings (application controlled). Other than that, a dxdiag report might show us something.

Do the following immediately after restarting your system.

Click Start, then Run and type dxdiag into the box and click OK. When the loading bar stops, run the tests on the Display and Sound Pages. Then return to the System Page and click the Save All Information button. Then open file dxdiag.txt which should be on your desktop. Copy and paste the entire thing to another post in this thread.

I didn't restart my system. I'd already done this as the MW mods forum people told me you'd want this.

DirectX Files Tab: The file directx.cpl is a debug version, which will run slower than the retail version

The first thing I'd try is updating DirectX. Debug anything=bad. You can start http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=2da43d38-db71-4c1b-bc6a-9b6652cd92a3&DisplayLang=en.

When you can do a restart, run dxdiag again and tell us what your Page file used number is. It will be displayed on the initial screen.

Page file used = 275MB used, 4935MB available

That Direct X download isn't working for me.

The page file used is a bit high, but shouldn't cause this much trouble.

What happens with the update? You've got SP2, so it should go through the validation okay.

I just found another direct x 9c download. It says (full version) but also says .redist (redistributable?) in the filename. It's a more recent version. Mine was Aug2008, this is Nov2008. Being .redist, does that mean it will also be debug version?

Also how do I get the warn 0% (add 4 green boxes here) out of my profile. I looked in My Controls. Can't see the option. No one else has it and it makes me look like a naughty girl with the possibility of needing to be told off some time soon.

No, that should work. My link was to Nov 08 too.

Everybody has the warn bars. A member can only see their own though and it's there so we can tell you off when needed. :P

*sighs* Microsoft will probably send me a virus or shut me down now. Great.

I think what's happened is that my computer whiz friend (who I haven't been able to get hold of for months, hence why he can't fix my MW) is a very lazy guy. He probably couldn't be bothered looking in the boxes of stuff I gave him for my CD key when he did a reinstall a while back. I had a very peristant worm (welchia.B) that Norton kept removing, but it kept coming back. He told me when I picked up my PC that he'd done a reinstall. I did give him my disks and cd key but he probably used his own out of sheer laziness. He hates Bill Gates passionately. I can't see him paying for his windows. I'm going to have to reinstall the lot or I won't get any updates. Grrrr.

Edit: Welchia.b worm is not cool. That's just what happens when you put a b and then a bracket. Silly auto smilies

Have you tried auto updates since the reinstall? If he installed and was able to validate Windows so that it would run for more than a couple of weeks, then it should have been done with your key. Unless he used a hacked version.

No, I did my certificate III with this guy in 2004. Back then he was like my PC mentor. My friendship with him helped me learn all the small stuff like Ctrl+C = copy haha. I walked into Cert III without having done Cert I or II. Cert III is like, completely customising all office apps with some pretty big excell, word & access macros, creating complete databases such as large companies would use with access, building PCs from scratch inc learning about all the really old stuff from the early ribbon cables and ED RAM days to now, being able to explain what a server motor is or pitts on a CD. A bit of hex coding etc. At first I was way over my head but I walked out with 100% in 4 subjects and 98% in the other one. The top end stuff I had to learn like everyone else, but the simple stuff that I should have been learning in Cert I and Cert II, I learned 'on the job' from this guy. Because of that, I learned to take his word for Gospel. He's been into PCs since before Commodore 64s. I can't remember the names of the PCs he was talking about but they were before I was born.

This friend I'm talking about always lectured me to never use auto-update. He hates Microsoft and is certain that they deliberately release updates that cause more harm than good in order to sell service packs that fix them. Either that or they release things too early and then need to release something else to fix a bug they didn't know it would create. He's the reason I'm not using Vista. He says he won't go to Vista until SP3 is out for it (if I remember the number right, could be a diff SP). He always hammered into me not to use updates until they were released in a service pack (hence why he figured I wouldn't notice his laziness most likely, haha).

The other thing could be that my SP's are not validated? I always get my SPs off this friend. I know they're copied but I was under the impression that Service Packs are freeware?

Well, there's a pretty good chance it's hacked then. Do you want to continue with this then, or are you going to do a reinstall/validate first. I have to split soon, but I do see one other thing you could try. It would probably be best to get your XP squared away first though.

Hope ur still there. My internet froze.

No. I'm not going to bother reinstalling just now. Next time something goes wrong I will. I never got around to ghosting so it'd be a lot more work than a simple reimage. (Actually I've ghosted after I got the computer back but that would be useless haha).
For now, I'll just get it working until I finish playing MW or until next time I pick up some new virus or bugger up my registry.. .there's always a good reason for a reinstall, but until one comes up, I can't be bothered :P

I'm having trouble installing DirectX. At first I don't know where to extract it, so I just extracted it to C:\ Inside was a bunch of zip files dated pretty much by the month up to Nov and a setup.exe. I ran the setup and it said I installed it ok but when I ran dxdiag, I got the same msg about it being a debug version and there was NOTHING NEWER THAN AUGUST (ie: my last version). What am I doing wrong? I've rebooted and run dxdiag again

What was ur other idea?

EDIT: Nope, ur Offline. Oh well... it's 8am down here downunder. I might go to bed until you get back *yawns and falls off chair, gropes across the floor with bleary eyes and crawls into bed*
I'll just bump this thread if u haven't responded when I resurface :-) Thanks for all ur help!

Well, you've got some codecs that can give Morrowind trouble (elecard and Intervideo). They usually cause crashes during video, but anything can happen with these things.

First make a Restore Point in case it doesn't help.

Go http://nightmare2013.brashendeavors.net/and get nightmare2013's codec reset utility. The zip package has a file named xpsp2wmp9. Extract and run it. What it does is reset your codecs to just those that get installed with XP. If it works for the game, go through his readme because some of your media apps may not work and he gives tips on how to deal with that. If it doesn't help, restore back to the point you made and it will undo the changes to your registry.

Return to III - Morrowind
