[req] OBGEv2 for Fallout 3

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 2:50 am

Having used and fallen in love with OBGEv2 (for Oblivion), I've been wondering how easy it would be to do the same for FO3.

Is it at all possible to just "port" it in, directly? Or would there be more involved than that... I suspect so. :( Otherwise, I suppose, someone would've done it already.

But anyway, I'm curious, and it would be glorious to see FO3 as good as it could be. Really, if you haven't checked out what OBGE can do for this kind of engine, I recommend doing so - it's stunning. And only getting more so, month by month, or so.

Some of the functions of OBGE are already covered by Imagespace Modifiers.

lol. What the hell are those, then?

Something tweakable using the GECK, or possibly FOSE? That would make sense, I suppose.

Do you mean DoF already being more or less integrated, that kind of thing?

I was really meaning stuff like Godrays, SSAO, Color Moods, ScreenEffects, shadowing (though that's still in the works for OBGE anyway), etc.

They're part of the default GECK. You can find them under the World tab.

Right you are.

But no, not at all what I was meaning.

You're thinking of ScreenEffects. What this guy means is a plugin for loading OBGE shaders into Fallout 3 - which should be possible, as long as the renderers aren't completely different.

However, note that you don't need OBGE for self-shadowing/SSAO - if you have an NVIDIA card, you can turn it on/off in the driver settings. Of course, things like godrays and colour correction would still require an OBGE-like plugin, so...
As an aside: colour correction in Fallout 3? Well, that's one way to remove the green tint...

Fallout's natural SSAO is so subtle you can barely see the results in most cases outside of interiors. At any rate, I believe this question came up in the Oblivion Forums. From what Scanti said, it would be a nightmare to convert all the coding to work with Fallout and even then it would be another nightmare to get Fullscreen Shaders to appear in Fallout. Of course thats not stopping anyone from doing so, just know that it is quite the workload to take on.

IIRC, the author abandoned that project. What a shame as it look most promising. I couldn't believe that video was Fallout 3.

Yes, that is a real shame. :(

Of course, there is ENB. But (of course...) there isn't an available premade config for that game. That I'm aware of, anyway. I tried just using a couple of other games' setting files and stuff... with mixed results, let's just say. :brokencomputer:

For some reason, I really miss Godrays in particular. But, naturally, proper SSAO is also key. Sigh. That's some nice work underway, assuming it is underway (via that link).

I understand that "FGE" would be a lot of work. But, wasn't/isn't OBGE? And hey, MGE? Strikes me there mightn't be as much enthusiasm for doing wacky stuff with FO3, which saddens me (if true).

There are some pretty good mods that add to the 'visuals' of Fallout 3, but yeah I hear you - being able to load custom shaders would be great.

I've noticed that too, it seems to me that Oblivion's modding scene is much more active than Fallout 3's. Well atleast we have FWE and FOOK2 :)

Fallout's a very niche game, so it only appeals to certain people. Oblivion's a super moddable dungeon diving game, and that attracts a massive number of PC gamers. I'm a proud and permanent convert, so long as Fallouts keep coming out.

I never really missed OBGE or anything for Fallout. Everything just kinda fit, to me. Though I was just a little disappointed that the streams of light from windows on the inside were hand placed. But I think a lot of people are thinking now "New Vegas is days away...why bother?" when it comes to some projects.

If they are, that is very close-minded.
