Oblivion 5th year won't let me start a new game

Post » Fri May 04, 2012 8:56 am

Hello and thanks for taking the time to check this out. I have read a bunch of post trying to make sure that this was not already covered, sorry if I had missed it. I recenlty purchased this 5th anniversary edition for PC to play on my rig that I built a year and a half ago. The traditional Oblivion played on my previous XP rig with no problem. So In my genius figured that the newly released anniversary edition would be more windows 7 friendly for me. Needless to say it installs and works fine right up until i click "New Game" and the cursor freezes and the program goes non responsive. The only thing that is different than normal is that when I go start the launcher it says that it cannot find my graphics and settings will be set to medium. I have read on several boards that if i deleted that nfo file or whatever it was called that it would reset but to no avail. I have installed and uninstalled a couple of times and tried compatibility modes as well as administrator. I am desperate at this point and I figure this is the place to seek help. I will list my pc specs below. if you require more info please ask.

thank you
Joe

Also I have no mods

It won't recognize your vid card, as your vid card is newer than the game. Just adjust the video options in the launcher to what you want them to be. It should remember the settings.

Did you install the game to the program files directory? If you did, uninstall it, and install it somewhere else. C:\Games\Oblivion works great. (and avoids the whole UAC problem.)

I have just finished trying the above mentioned changes, unfortunately to no avail. When I click on options in the launcher it recognizes my Radeon HD 4600 Series. but it still prompted that it could not be found and would be defualtly set. I manually went through trying every single resolution but they all froze when I clicked on new game. The only thing that is wierd is there is an antialiasing option under options that is empty. Not sure if I should mess with that or not. that is why I bought the new anniversary edition figuring if it was my graphics card it would recognize it. If you have any other ideas or suggestions I am all ears, if not thanks for trying.

Joe

Had a small breakthrough today when I found a folder named bethesda in my program files folder with oblivion and morrownind subfolders. I deleted those and it stopped saying that my graphics card could not be recognized. Still freezes when I click new game and where the intro video should begin. Not sure if t his will help but I figure it couldn't hurt

Finally got it. I got so upset that I did a complete wipe of my hard drive and installed oblivion first, and checked after every program that I have installed and it still works. Must have been a program conflict or the new graphics card drivers that I didnt' insall yet.
