Oblivion And Memory Usage

Post » Tue May 03, 2011 8:08 am

No idea, but I don't need to use a leaky mod to get the thing to collapse either. Unless I already have one that is. All I really need to do is wander around for awhile in a high VRAM usage area and eventually the process will crash. As with XP, I've yet to get it to cross past 1.9GB. I've tried also patching the obse_loader.exe, no dice. I pulled all the OBSE plugins out, no dice (but damn did it stutter!!!). I can't very well pull out OBSE itself because a sizeable chunk of my load order depends on it. 18beta6 for whatever that's worth. I don't know what 18.6c is supposed to indicate unless I'm behind on my OBSE install.

I don't think this is being caused by any one particular mod either. Filling up the memory is enough, and it hardly matters if that's in a city or out in a densely packed wilderness. Also getting a ton of NPCs involved regardless of where can do it too.

Just to be sure the system will use LAA at all, I tagged tes4edit.exe and then threw in the Mesogea ESM file alongside the rest of my order. tes4edit easily broke the 2GB barrier, and in the end it crashed at 3.99GB. Or rather just terminated loading, it actually handled the lack of memory gracefully.

I can't help but think there must be something terribly obvious that we're missing here. Also don't see how it would be in any way possible for a mod to undo the LAA flag, since that would mean mods are modifying the physical exe file and that would be Bad Things™

Just out of curiosity where is Oblivion Installed too? And how do you Launch Oblivion. I realize you use OBSE but are you launching from inside BASH or from a shortcut?

Game is installed to C:\Games\Bethesda Softworks\Oblivion

OBSE is being launched via a shortcut on the desktop. I never launch the game from inside Bash.

Ok what is your Oblivion..IE:GoTy Steam, Original. D2D

This is my path to shortcut....."C:\Program Files (x86)\Bethesda Softworks\Oblivion\obse_loader.exe" yours similar?

I use Win 7 x64 Path is per above. Original Game bought first Week. http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee72/camaro_69_327/2010%20Oblivion/Oblivion2_5hours02.jpg
So we have to be able to find what is bugged with your install.

Ok, so obviously many of us use the patch and it works, so no need to try the leaky mod I suggested than. I launch OBSE from OBMM, but I doubt that makes a difference. As far as OBSE versions and your being behind, don't worry you aren't behind. I was just following very closely to the OBSE thread and Scruggs was linking to some newer test betas. 18.6c and 18.6d are some that I have tried. So far 18.6d seems to be great so far! It sure wouldn't hurt you to try it out...http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1082422-beta-oblivion-script-extender-obse-0018/page__view__findpost__p__15777780

I am really stumped on your crashing though. I'd hate to see you have to tear down your load order and rebuild it until you find the issue which conflicts with the LAA. If you have a memory leaking mod currently, that wouldn't be the source of your crashes. All that would do is decrease the amount of time it takes for you to reach your current memory ceiling. (1.8gb)

IDK , maybe try that other OBSE version just to see what happens for now. I will have to brainstorm a bit.
I think I asked you before about modified executable. So we should be able to rule that out. Do you use a program like Damon Tools to load your Oblivion disc image by chance?

EDIT - I think we determined from a previous post from a player that GOTY works ok with LAA. Not sure about Steam or D2D.
Just for kicks, could you post your LO Arthmoor?

I PM'd Aretino to see if he ever resolved his 1.8gb crash. His reported issue is the same as your Arthmoor. Will let you know if I hear more on this.

Original retail box, from before they got forced to re-rate as M. KOTN retail CD, SI retail CD. Latest official patch applied.

This is my path to shortcut....."C:\Program Files (x86)\Bethesda Softworks\Oblivion\obse_loader.exe" yours similar?

"C:\Games\Bethesda Softworks\Oblivion\obse_loader.exe" is the path on the shortcut.

I'll give that OBSE beta a shot, never know, but like I said, I don't believe it's possible for a mod of any sort, even an OBSE plugin, to cancel out the LAA flag. If that were the case I'm positive there'd be way more reports of this problem. It would also be a pretty serious breach of system security for non-executable content to modify an executable file.

Do you use a program like Damon Tools to load your Oblivion disc image by chance?

No. Genuine retail DVD sitting in the drive as I write. I don't do Steam copies for anything, I am an old school firm believer in retail copies.

Just for kicks, could you post your LO Arthmoor?

@Arthmoor
I have Teen version of the Game also...lol

This is what is first line in the OBSE_loader.log.

clearing large-address-aware flag (flags offset = 0000011E checksum offset = 00000160)

I am Assuming that would be itself and NOT oblivion? Miine works so Don't know. AS i am sure that OBSE gets its info from the Registry are the Top lines in the OBSE.log File Correct.

OBSE: initialize (version = 18.5 010201A0)
oblivion root = C:\Program Files (x86)\Bethesda Softworks\Oblivion\
plugin directory = C:\Program Files (x86)\Bethesda Softworks\Oblivion\Data\OBSE\Plugins\

In your Path of course..By any chance you REinstalled Oblivion? Could just be looking to wrong place?

Yes, it's a fresh install of Oblivion, fresh OS install as well.

Top line of obse_loader.log:

On the off chance something useful comes of it, this is what the last several crashes have had showing:
Problem signature:
Problem Event Name: BEX
Application Name: Oblivion.exe
Application Version: 1.2.0.416
Application Timestamp: 462392c7
Fault Module Name: StackHash_4c4a
Fault Module Version: 0.0.0.0
Fault Module Timestamp: 00000000
Exception Offset: 00000000

Additional Information 3: 4c4a
Additional Information 4: 4c4ad7529a34983b6293625c48169922

I know there was mention of overclocked CPUs and such causing StackHash crashes, but my hardware isn't overclocked.

What's even stranger is that the above crash is inevitably followed by this one:
Faulting application name: Oblivion.exe, version: 1.2.0.416, time stamp: 0x462392c7
Faulting module name: Oblivion.exe, version: 1.2.0.416, time stamp: 0x462392c7

That fault offset of 582789 is 100% consistent across all of the crashes I've logged in Win7 so far. Unfortunately Google turns up absolutely nothing for it.

At this point I've got nothing other than a guarantee that being in Chorrol or Anvil is likely to trigger the problem, and anywhere else in the world is literally a crap-shoot.

What OS not XP by chance is it . There is info On the OSR thread about oblivion and the hash not playing nice. On XP.

I was being plagued just like others with random crashes to my desktop, without it making sense. Observing my memory management I found out it was related to the 32 bits restrictions. The LAA patch did wonders, in a way that I was able to go from a mere 1.7 GB to a whooping 8.1 GB game (I run 12 GB here).

The added addressing was needed, since I am running an heavily modded game with loads of textures. I can not even imagine playing without it! I only patched Oblivion.exe though (Retail) and skipped obse.loader totally.

It is a must on a x64 system! (Windows 7 Ultimate here).

The one line in particular I'm finding unnerving is where it lists "Display Memory" as 1010 MB instead of the full 2038 MB. If this turns out to be a limitation on DX itself, is there anything that can be done about it?

BEX- error- events

Try to switch off DEP (Data Execution Prevention) for Oblivion.exe sometimes this helps a little bit.

I'll have to find those DEP settings again, but I'm pretty sure I turned it off entirely. Might not have though.

Not sure why you're pointing out Battlehorn, I bought that separate when it was available online. Unless there's some sneaky relationship to this memory issue?

Nope, guess that was the "turn all this on" setting instead. Added oblivion.exe to the exception list.

Still no go, but now the crash data is coming up different:
Problem signature:
Problem Event Name: APPCRASH

It would be really handy to know just what goes on at 74dbe2c4 so that I might stand some chance of resolving the issue. Also still didn't clear the 2GB barrier.

No

I think the StackHash- error is an error you get if no other error annoys you.
I get this error sometimes when I move many things in or out of my inventory, especially things I bought in shops late in the evening without paying (stolen items).

2 GB memory barrier: you need an older obse ver 18 beta/alpha with memory leak or some "buggy" mods and you will break the barrier - max. I reached was something around 3.8 GB
(with win 7 x64, 8 GB ram, LAA flag in oblivion.exe)

load order: use BOSS with latest masterlist (but I think you know this)

Each GPU core has 1024 MB of memory (Display Memory: 3826 MB <-- something virtual? , Dedicated Memory: 1014 MB <-- real)

I think something with your display memory is wrong. Perhaps a problem with a BIOS setting or the graphiccard driver or the DXSetup

Yeah. Thinking it might have been a BIOS issue, I upgraded to the most recent one available for my motherboard. It changed nothing. I still see the "Display Memory" value at 1010 MB.

Your display is exactly what I'd expect to see from an X2, reporting that you really only have 1GB of actual VRAM. I am not running with an X2 card, this is a single GPU with 2 GB on it.

Driver is Catalyst 10.3 64-bit for Windows 7. There isn't a newer one up yet.

That fault offset of 582789 is 100% consistent across all of the crashes I've logged in Win7 so far. Unfortunately Google turns up absolutely nothing for it.

The exception code you show is ......Exception Code: c0000005

these would both led me to think bad Memory Module. Could even try switching slots and see if the Address changes. Even try lowering to only using 4 Gig to see if you can get past 2.5 even.

Also are you using OSR ,Replace the Memory Tables for Oblivion.

Exception Code: c0000005 is nothing more than a generic access violation. What I know from C programming as a "segmentation fault". Usually something doing Bad Things™ with memory. I've never once seen an event log for something not list that exception code, and Google has literally thousands of them. The fault offset is the actual address within the executable that caused the issue, but with a "StackHash" that's apparently not a real executable.

I'm beginning to suspect some kind of hardware defect, and if that's the case, Corsair is going to send me some new RAM since I just bought the silly things in January.

I'm going to be even less happy if it turns out the video card is also defective, but I have a hard time believing that since it works just fine in Dragon Age with a high quality texture pack.

Yes, I'm using OSR, I guess it can't hurt to fiddle with heap replacement and hash table resizing. Worst it'll do is crash :P

This fiddling you mention is what got me a very stable Oblivion. to make this easier this is my ini for OSR. Works Great. Cant hurt I am also on Win 7 with 8 gigs ram.

I already have a CD of memtest86, it just finished two complete passes and part of a 3rd and reported back 0 errors with all 8GB of the system ram. Which I was happy to see, so whatever the issue was is either in the video card, or in some sneak setting I can fix at some point. I'll start by trying out the suggestions - Heap 5 @ 800 looks like a good first step.

Baphometal, that's an awful lot of suppressions. Do they actually help? I have version 4.1.3.0 according to the DLL info.
