Oblivion And Physical Memory Usage

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 4:38 am

That's odd, because the only two LAA patches I knew of ( and can't find now ) both said to apply it to the Oblivion.exe file. I've never seen mention of using one on the obseloader.exe, and you shouldn't need to either since that program doesn't remain active once the game is launched.

So, where did I get the obseloader.exe from I wonder? Is LLA patch dependent on OBSE?

You can benefit from LAA without having to use OBSE.

Well, at any rate, I think my confusion started with this topic...

http://www.gamesas.com/bgsforums/index.php?showtopic=1071326&st=0

In the discussion there was much talk about OBSE dependency, and by the end of it I just thought OBSE was what needed to be flagged with the LLA.
Oh well, hopefully this thread is a bit more informative for players that are new to discovering this invaluable patch.

btw, do not use the above linked patch for Oblivion.

Windows 7 64bit experienced CTD at 3.8gb of ram! That's about right. Now, I wonder if an
8gb patch is available?

EDIT - Passed the 3.5gb mark!

WE can Dream cant we?? 8 gig mem used....lol

I just would like to know how to find WHAT is not giving memory back to the available amount as i can watch a slow , long, crawl upwards.....Always!!!

Or... is this the eventual CTD nothing but a well intentioned reminder, deliberately put into the game by Bethesda, for us not to get completely lost in the game whenever we play it? It could be a feature after all....

I think it's now fairly obvious OB has a big fat memory leak somewhere. It's also fairly obvious I need to do something about upgrading to Windows 7 even though I'd really prefer to avoid that.

I am still amazed that i could end task on EXPLORER and Oblivion seamed the same? I was down to like 700 meg ram used and still climed way up and eventually stuttered and crashed took alot longer but still.....

Hmm, hopefully you aren't referring to the memory leak test I kept referring to. If so, that was just a plugin I installed to test with. Don't want to confuse anyone.

Does it leak memory for everyone or just some people or with some mods?

Well I can't speak for Arthmoor, but I haven't noticed any leaks in any other mods yet myself. Although, I think this would be a great place to report any if others run across them. I'd say mods containing scripts are the most likely candidates.

No, I mean, look at it. Without LAA, it runs out of memory and dies around 2GB. With LAA, it runs out and dies as it closes on 4GB. If your mod load doesn't change in between adding the LAA flag, then why would the game continue to consume memory until it's exhausted it all unless there's a big leak somewhere?

It sounds like he was saying that he deliberately forced Oblivion to leak memory. It is possible to do that.

Though I have talked to people with regular Oblivion installs that were clearly leaking memory. They seemed to be the minority though.

I applied the 4GB patch in the first post on a heavily-modified game on Windows 7 x64 and immediately started getting full-on system crashes and other anomalies (like this curious glitch where the whole system would lock up and my screen image was replaced with a pretty quilt-like pattern of yellow and brown) within only a few minutes of play or near cities (meaning: not full RAM, but probably quickly being assigned). Removing the patch fixed it. So be warned, anyone getting system crashes. Not sure why it did it.

That is the first I've heard of any LAA incompatibilities in Oblivion.

Though to some extent it may modify where heap allocations go once the initial preallocated pools fill up, and it has been all too well demonstrated that Oblivion is strangely (read: buggily) sensitive to changes in heap behavior.

Would that be affected at all by your heap replacements in OSR? Because I tried all of them (at least all of the ones I'm supposed to :P), tried disabling it, tried removing the .dll completely, and nothing worked until I just up and restored my backup .exe file. And if it helps, the crash and freeze was most reproducible near Better Cities Anvil, which with its extensive dock is the heaviest hit to VRAM (and other system resources) that I know of.

I've been using and loving (strong choice of words I know) the 4gb LAA.

I know my game still leaks memory but generally runs smoother and last longer now.

No strange crashes - on Vista x64 - with 8 gigs DDR2.

.....
Somewhat related to this: I was having trouble generating distant land in Morrowind Graphic Extender (MGE) due to an out-of-memory error. Well, I applied the /LAA patch to MGE and voila! I could then generate distant land...
...

Care to report this in http://www.gamesas.com/bgsforums/index.php?showtopic=1074308, so it can be documented. Thanks.

Sorry about the bold text in that last reply. I'm curious how your ram usage for oblivion.exe is able to reach above 2gb? I'll be adding some variables to my testing soon. OSR for one and lla 4gb patch again. One new update I have for everybody. Windows xp 64 ctd's fo me cosistentley around 1.6gb when allowing the memory to slowly increase from that memory leak script mentioned in my first post. Currently testing my memory with memtest+86. 1st pass had no errors.

I feel I just wasted days and days of my life messing with mods where the real problem was what you mention above. I too use Windows 7 x64 and have noticed my memory being to the 1.6-1.7gb range and usually gets very unstable around then and a CTD is likely.

I will keep up with this thread, and maybe add some more as soon as I can get a working Oblivion install with mods. I will also check out rivatuner if the in-game VRAM counter is not accurate as I have crashed at around 850mb VRAM for no apparent reason when my HD5970 has 2GB (well, really 1GB usable I have learned.)

Great thread, so the patch to allow Oblivion.exe to use more RAM than 2GB does not work for you, or whoever is using Win 7 x64?

EDIT:
FINALLY! I added the 4gb patch to the Oblivion.exe.... POOF!!!! fing05.gif My oblivion.exe physical ram usage has surpassed the 2gb mark
and will most likely keep going for sometime. I will report back where it ends crashing.

Thank god dude! Nice freakin breakthrough, I have 6GB of RAM and this will be great for system stability, may even solve all the CTD issues I have been experiencing! 3 Oblivion re-installs for nothing!

Seriously though, nice find! And of course, thanks for the patch link I had no idea about this until I was browsing these forums. These forums are a gold-mine of stabilizing Oblivion.

Yes, that is exactly what I did Arthmoor and SkyRanger-1! I couldn't get over why my game would consistently crash
after loading X number of mods. I knew I had enough ram and vram to handle the load. I really just stumbled on the memory leak testing idea though. I have to give Qquix some indirect credit since it was one of his mod scripts that contained the leak I used to test with. (Rather ironic...) :biglaugh: He's working to get the script fixed btw

@http://www.gamesas.com/bgsforums/index.php?showuser=370902 - Wish I could help on your issue there. Hopefully you can figure that one out. Unfortunately I don't know much about the LLA patch other than it is supposed to work with Oblivion.
I'll PM you if I think of anything that may be throwing off your games stability.

I'll be keeping an eye out for mods that have memory leaks and create a list to post here. As I build my load order, I'll just watch for memory leaks. Would be great if others could do the same.

Not sure who you were directing your question to on that one?

LOL! Dude, I feel bad for you but not that bad. I've been playing this game for 3 years and everytime I had my load order just as I wanted it, the game would start giving me crashes every 20-30 minutes. I can't even count how many times I've reinstalled Oblivion and Windows. Double and triple checked load orders... It's awesome though that this may be your silver bullet! That's pretty much how I felt earlier today when I finally got that LLA patch working!

Thanks for the kind words Jamrock990!

Haha, it's been a long and treacherous road but I have finally worked out the kinks it seems. I at least have a 100% working FCOM+++ install with QTP3 + any other texture replacer you name it, backed up and ready to replace if anything goes haywire. So I have something to lean on this time, adding some more weather mods now and it seems i'll be good to go. This is one of THE BEST finds I have come across in my quest to get Oblivion modded to TES5 looking/playing quality.

This is great though getting to know the Oblivion engine better, however buggy it may be, it is nice to at least have some idea why I get a random CTD.. it was so frustrating before when it happened out of the blue, and I hadn't even changed my load order it's as if the game just turned on me, or itself, and started crashing itself.

I have a couple questions that would greatly help:

1. Do you guys/girls use the "multi-thread tweaks" for the ini file. Such as the background loading options and setting the iThread to 9. I have yet to really notice if those tweaks helped or hurt, and with the presence of such great mods as OSR and Streamline I am wondering if they are even needed? Do those tweaks benefit your game at all?

2. I must have picked up a strange version of Rivatuner, it's some OC Extreme version, of which I have no use for the OC'ing function of Rivatuner at the moment. The interface is awful and I have yet to locate the VRAM/RAM monitor you all have spoke of. If you could let me in on that, that'd be great I could keep track of my usage during play and test for sure if I am crashing the same as you are far327, at 1.6-1.7gb as I remember from previous install. I am going to wait on installing the 4GB patch so I can really see the difference it makes, will make it all the more satisfying!

Thanks

EDIT: Was having crashes whenever BC was installed before! NO crashes this time! Running in and around the Waterfront, causes crashing on ALL of my 5 other installs, including on my other computer! VRAM crept up to 890mb and smooth as can be, no OSR or Streamline or any obse plugins installed yet either! Finally!!! I can actually play the game hahaha :D

Man that's great to hear! That means I can finally run the same mods without the worry of a CTD! I'm really happy to hear your positive reaction man!
I'm just the same as you! Over frustrated before, and over joyed that I can finally immerse myself into such a great game!

I have another great update to report!!! I finished testing my home computer which has 4gb of ram.
I didn't experience a CTD until I hit 3.4gb!!! That's really awesome in comparison to what 8gb of ram produced (3.8gb)
And to think last night I was actually considering buying more ram? lol!! :biglaugh:

One interesting thing I noticed once my physical ram usage on the Oblivion.exe process reached the 3.4gb ceiling.
Windows7 actually started to purge the cached memory on it's own!!! I didn't notice this earlier when I tested with 8gb
because I was working... But I watched it, and it actually gave Oblivion about an additional 3-5 minutes of stability before
the CTD! Pretty awesome if you ask me. So not only do we now have a more stable game, but a built in PCB that will help prevent
Oblivion.exe from actually even reaching the ceiling point!

At first I was under the impression that the game was just badly designed and leaked memory and that mods just made it more so. Only recently have I heard that mods themselves may be the cause. (is that the consensus now?)

My load order is too far gone to be of any objective use in saying that this mod or that mod is the cause. You would really have to be extremely objective in testing that and very political in posting it. Starting with a very vanilla load order and building from there.

After I retire my character (no time soon) will go with a leaner load order (yeah right) and could look for that.

[edit] oh and I never stated that ctds went away - just that thinks improved. No magic formulas with oblivion - just slight improvements over time.

Yesss! I'm ecstatic! I have spent a large portion of my free time trying to get this game to work it almost became an obsession. An obsession fulfilled to its full glory is something great, and getting a glimpse of the game fully modded (I originally played it on the 360 HAH, what a joke,) with CTD all over the place that is, it made me angry and ruined the immersion when I say.. fast-travelled to Anvil and got a CTD approaching the town. It was awful.

Haha, i'm about to head off here and start a new character! Got a lot more mods, but the visual and audio aspect of Oblivion is top tier right now with all the mods, in addition to some other cosmetic stuff such as Better Cities and of course FCOM! Really looking forward to start playing for real with FCOM, I got to level 4 with my other character and it was a CTD-hell the whole entire time. I can't say it too many times, having a smooth, modded Oblivion is something else, LOL. Going from the 360 version with awful graphics to a modded Oblivion.. it really is just like playing an entirely different game, and I am not usual one to really get into the game and "roleplay" per say, but I really can't help it with this game modded it really pulls you in! Anyway, fun stuff!

Oh, and I haven't even used the 4GB patch yet! I'm going to get a good few hour play session in now, I will report with any CTD's that happen and I will try to decipher the cause if any occur! *crosses fingers*

That's good to hear though! Time to char-gen :D

Yeah, i am still counting on CTDs to happen from other underlying issues, but understanding this one reason for CTDs is a HUGE step for me!
I can honestly say that this CTD was certainly the number one issue I encountered after reaching above 150 mods or more!

Oh, and I haven't even used the 4GB patch yet! I'm going to get a good few hour play session in now, I will report with any CTD's that happen and I will try to decipher the cause if any occur! *crosses fingers*

Oh, I was under the impression that you already applied the patch. Well, let us know how things go. The more info that is brought to light here the better.

thanks

EDIT - Meant to answer your question about Riva Tuner. Be careful what you change because you can royally screw up your video card if you aren't careful.

To configure RivaTuner, choose Hardware Monitoring from the Customize(little triangle) menu. Click on the Setup button. Click on the Plugins button in the lower left corner of Hardware monitoring setup. Scroll through the list and choose Vidmem.dll. I like to select CPU.dll too. Ok out of these dialog boxes. (not my quote btw)

Leave RivaTuner Hardware Monitoring running and play your game.

The multi-threaded tweaks are outdated and not recommended. Most of the suggestions found over on the Tweaksguide for Oblivion web page are outdated. Oblivion Stutter Remover should definitely be a staple mod for anyones game. Reason being is that it adds further stability to the game and is completely customizable through it's .ini file. I don't enough about it to give the technical details, but I'm sure SkyRanger-1 would be happy to offer some better insight. Maybe try posting your questions over on his thread.

Thanks for all the effort that went into figuring this out : ). Seeing the results you got from your testing, I can't wait to throw this patch on and start playing! Hopefully that list of mods that leak memory will get started soon too!

Quick question; I'm not all that experienced with modding. Are memory leaks caused by scripts? And if so, is there a way to fix the vanilla OB leaks?
