Oblivion is better than Skyrim...here we go again...

Post » Wed May 02, 2012 1:50 pm

play this, then oblivion then play morrowind. morrowind is exponentially better than both.
edit: still enjoy skyrim, oblivion is okay too. when you compare them to morrowind though. its no competition for me.

Yeah, the 'nostalgia' bit gets repeated a lot, even though there is no basis to support it.

Nostalgia happens everywhere with everything, it depends what you grew up with and when you have those memories you'll never let them go. That's why you still play morrowind because it will never be a bad game to you and no matter what game comes out now it won't give you the same satisfaction, it's why older generations don't listen to new music, they only tend to like the era they grew up in.

Does this mean new music isn't as good as music from a long time ago? Does this mean new games will never be better than old games? Only in your mind and that's the basis to support my point on.

I'm not going to say Oblivion is a better game, but i will say that Cyrodiil was a lot more interesting than Skyrim.

Now you made a good point, i prefer morrowind and cyrodiil istead of skyrim... But i love the skyrim gameplay, quests and npcs, i think its far better than the others. I dont know, skyrim is too cold XD I guess they did it right, the skyrim land gives a lonely, cold, and abandoned feelings. But the replay value of Skyrim is awesome, i think its much better than Oblivion's. In Oblivion i had many characters, but rarely i found new things with each one as i find in Skyrim.

Morrowind is a better story and better game world. It has HORRIBLE game mechanics (IMO).

Oblivion has a fairly mundane story, a god aweful game world and pretty good mechanics.

Skyrim is more of the same with slightly improved combat.

I've spent more than 800 hours playing Oblivion and just 160 on Skyrim to get bored with the game. Never used mods.

Similar feeling here.
Though Morrowind still entertains me, Oblivion made me want to blow my brains out eventually. Skyrim is following a similar path.

There are things that I like about Skyrim more than Oblivion, but I seriously miss the NPC interactions. Sure, they were really stupid sometimes, but at least you could talk to everyone. At least they interacted with each other. And at least they recognized changes in the story. I'm so over hearing the same 1-2 lines from NPCs in Skyrim, directed only at me. And yes, I do realize that there are times when NPCs will interact, but it's pretty rare. I barely go to Whiterun now because people only talk to me. It's also disheartening to hear people continue to talk about how Alduin has returned when I slayed him months ago.

I can deal with most of the changes. A lot of them are for the better. But why cut down on the interaction so much? It's frustrating and boring.

oblivion is probably the worst TES game to date...
just my opinion, of course, but I didn't like it a bit, shallow graphics, shallow NPCs, ridiculous voices, boring quests (does collect 100 nirnroots ring any bell?), more broken quests and stuck inventory items than skyrim, spellmaking was fine but also game-breaking (no wonder they removed it)

This reminds me of how I used to be obsessed with some games from back in the day. Zork. The first Final Fantasy. Zelda games. The first Baldur's Gate, and then the epic sequel with all its add-ons. Icewind Dale. Neverwinter Nights.

I loved those and so many others. Back then. I have fond memories of them now, but there is no way in hell I could go back and play any of them. I don't want to, and I wouldn't be able to, and I'm not sad about it either. I don't want them remade. I don't want them rebooted. I'm quite content to just keep my fond memories of them... and look to the present and the future for new experiences.

I hate to admit it, but its true. I was so stoked over skyrim, i was confident it would blow oblivion out of the water....but after only a few short months, im already completely bored to death of this game. I was STILL playing oblivion when skyrim came out, and having fun....skyrim however has run out of steam in the first lap of the race.

Here's what SKYRIM did BETTER than oblivion...

-Graphics
-Melee Combat
-Archery Combat
-Stealth Kills
-Enchanting
-Dragons
-Non psychic guards

What OBLIVION did BETTER than skyrim...

-EVERYTHING else (but ill name a few for fun)
-Quests
-Magic
-NPCs
-User Interface
-Skills
-Hotkeys
-Armor
-Creatures

let the debate begin!

I agree, I would also like to add that the PS3 Oblivion has better graphics than the PS3 Skyrim.

It's the same for every series of games: the older the release date, the better it is (so say the fans).

Many will love the new releases and openly admit it, while a great many will claim to hate it, yet play it religiously.

What he this guy said. I prefer the gameplay mechanics of Skyrim, but the land is just boring. It annoyed me too, because I love the whole Norse mythology thing and the mountainous, far north setting. It's just so dull though, like someone posted a while back, it should be called

TES Canada.

I think "Vikings vs. Dragons" as someone said in the mods forum would fit better :hehe: Although "Vikings vs. Bears and Wolves" would be more truthful :lmao:

If I could set a rule for Bethesda's next Elder Scrolls game, it would be design the magic system with spellmaking from the ground up... because I swear I'm am going to be so persistent in my complaints over the next ~5 years that even the people who agree with me are going to wish I'd shut up.

I think this says it all:

That's how badly Skyrim's magic system svcks. Almost 2/3s would be happy if one day they woke to find that Skyrim's magic system had disappeared like the Dwemer... without a trace or explanation and found Oblivion's magic system instead.

The magic system in Skyrim is an ambitious, but failed experiment and I really think Bethesda should do the next best thing and offer a refreshed Oblivion magic system as a mod. It is clear that more people want it than don't and we're that poll worded so that the replacement of Skyrim's magic system was optional, the poll results would be even more lopsided.

lol yea, a statistic on a game bought by millions of people based on 200 votes tells a lot...
especially when made on a forum where most of the people come in to complain...

It is called sample size.

To use my poll as an example. If I plug in the results and use 5 million as the population size as a whole, then my poll results are +/- 6.79%... which isn't too bad for an impromptu poll.

Then you can look at other polls [below] on the subject of the magic system and you'll see the trend line is firmly against Skyrim's magic system, in favor of an Oblivion styled magic system.

well a 6,79% result means that the 93,21% of the people likes it...pretty cool huh? this proves you are totally wrong.

Might want to brush up on your statistics, there.

The key to a good sample size isn't just the number of people questioned, but the composition of the group. These forums are an awful place to conduct a poll, because the average player doesn't come here to vote in polls. In fact, based on reviews and sales, one could easily conclude that there's a disproportionate number of people here who have negative opinions of the game.

And that's why polls are silly. Because a skilled pollster can manipulate the numbers through manipulating the polling group, the format of the questions, or the size of the group polled.

Its personal opinion, I dont think Skyrim is better or worse, what I think is that it was the best from its time and that they are their own unique games.

Is there a way I can tell how poor your understanding of math is without violating the ToS?

...who knows? Anyway....

It means that 64.74%, +/- 6.79% would be happier if Skyrim's magic disappeared outright

statistics are useful when you take the sample from the entire population, problem is that you are taking the sample from a forum where people usually come to complain. it's like making a statistic on what's the better sport between soccer and basket by only asking basket players...genius

If like the game earlier in the series go play that, if not then don't complain about the later one. You have a choice to play this game, you are not required to play it. As for core game play and how easy it may seem. Its just there way to make it more appealing to a larger crowd of people to get more fans and more money in the end. You can't complain about the future when you want the past, so deal with your problem. And the modding community can easily keep you busy till the first major DLC will come into play.

And yes I do have an idea of what I'm talking about. I got plenty of friends who will rather play old 1980s & 1990s games than the new style.

Well you work with what you've got. The magic system is a subsystem of the games overall design and much of the game is terrific. Reviews by critics are initial impressions of the game as a whole, while the consensus about individual portions of the game take a little time to develop. To quote Bob Dylan, "It doesn't take a weather man to know which way the wind blows".

Skyrim's magic system is facing strong headwinds with users.

I think Skyrim is pretty good, and in my eyes slightly better than Oblivian. But if there was one thing I'd take from oblivian to Skyrim would be NO SPIDERS!!! It was like 11 in the evening I was playing it, when a spider crept up on me in the game and it took me like 30 minutes to calm down. I hate spiders.

In order to enhance your understanding of mathematics:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Statistics
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sample_space

Since one can never take a sample of the entire population, statistics works with what is called a representative sample of said population.
And poll takers do routinely ask only soccer players which is the better sport, this is called an askew sample and has many uses when for instance trying to sell someone something.
