Oblivion is better than Skyrim...here we go again...

In order to enhance your understanding of mathematics:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Statistics
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sample_space

Since one can never take a sample of the entire population, statistics works with what is called a representative sample of said population.
And poll takers do routinely ask only soccer players which is the better sport, this is called an askew sample and has many uses when for instance trying to sell someone something.

tnx for the links.
in fact the dude is trying to sell us that the magic system sux by asking mostly haters or people who had issues, makes sense.
and yes, I meant as representative sample, the fact is that this forum isn't a representative sample of the entire population, it mostly consists in people who had issues and haters, a real representative sample would be made out of people who enjoyed the game but played other ones too.
also 160 votes over idk 2000000 skyrim copies isn't much representative to me, it's like saying: "1/10000 of the people didn't liked it", uuhhh ok, who cares?

I'd put Skyrim above Oblivion, though I have fond memories of Oblivion.

Oblivion would surely kill Skyrim.

If not for being a CTD ridden game.

I wouldn't go that far and say that one title is better than the other but I have to say that Oblivion is more interesting than Skyrim. Same thing with Morrowind, which is more interesting than Obilvion.

You can compare all the technical aspects of a game with another, e.g. graphics or gameplay. But a game is more than the sum of it's parts and I agree with some others that the replay value is not that high in Skyrim as of its predecessors. With the advancing of technology and the opportunities to create more detaillied and more exciting worlds, the focus on creating a complex and coherent storyline seems to disappear. It's not all about visuals that make a game.

"We can do anything, but we can't do everything"

Once you really evaluate the BGS business model... Skyrim in its current form comes as no surprise.

They improved in many areas but didn't have the time or resources to improve in every area, even if that sadly meant they "cut" some of the options previously avaliable to us.

Morrowind, Oblivion, and I'm sure, eventually, Skyrim all hold a place dear to my heart. It's like picking which one of my kids I like better, they're all beautiful and unique in their own way.

Actually, that question was designed to eliminate "fence sitters" and I had plenty of questions with neutral options. In my poll last weekend, I found some things interesting:

->56.32% found Skyrim's magic system "acceptable".

->Non-mages found the system acceptable at a slightly lower percentage than mage-centric player ~55% to ~57%.

->3.66% think Skyrim's magic system is missing "nothing".

->139 votes were cast for Spellmaking as something that is missing from Skyrim's magic system, but only 58 votes were cast by those that think Skyrim's magic system needs major renovations. Let me just say it now, putting Spellmaking into Skyrim with the current system would amount to "major renovations".

Come on... you know you like one of your kids best. Just tell them, and pay for the therapy now.

Of course, most of those who really like the game are probably busy playing the game rather than going to forums and answering biased polls about the game...or they took one look at your silly biased poll, laughed and moved on...

I think the key is to see what Skyrim becomes over time. Oblivion out of the box isn't as good as Skyrim out of the box. Let's see how Skyrim is holding up this summer.

yep mods is what makes this game good

and since the ck was released this game is already 100% better than out of the box
in a year itll be awesome!

I can't think of any way that unmodded oblivion is better than skyrim.

Someone check on steam and see how many people are playing Skyrim vs Oblivion. Or Morrowind. That should settle this discussion.

Steam isn't very mod friendly.

Morrowind Graphic Extender doesn't work with steamoverlay for example.

Skyrim is better at delivering to you what you hated so much about oblivion and morrowind. This makes Skyrim highly superior. and it is superior than more ways than this. people who liked oblivion better are just hanging onto useless nostalgia. I liked daggerfall. played the hell outta the game. it's not better than skyrim. I played morrowind a ton. it was good. better than daggerfall. played oblivion. found it better than morrowind. and now Skyrim. better than oblivion Superior graphics. Superior simplified combat without all that useless stat crap. don't know what class you want to be? no problem...there are no classes in skyrim. never in any elder scrolls game have I ran into such unprecedented character customization options.

you are just hanging onto nostalgia. let it go.

Sorry, no offense but that is crap, I have loved all the elder scrolls games including Skyrim, but Oblivion was much deeper, and more interesting. In Skyrim the entire landscape looks pretty much the same, dull, and grey, and the quests are vapid, and storyline thin. That is pre dlc, and or expansions, as was stated Oblivion was not it's true self until later into the development, but I have no idea what people are talking about, unplayable until modded, Hopefully they will add what is needed, I have a feeling they did some of this on purpose to make a bigger impact for the dlc, but who knows. I'll still be playing Skyrim, and loving it, just wish it was more diverse.

Oblivion wasn't bad when I first played it, I ended up investing over 100 hours into it. But from a mechanical standpoint it just feels horrible.

The game has this annoying floaty feel to it. There is no weight to your character which means that both you, and your enemies slide around like they're on a hockey rink. Maybe I'll go back and replay it as I think the story is easily the best in the series, and I never did beat it.

But for now I'm still enjoying Skyrim, especially with the mods I have installed.

Sounds like a lot of what you do not like about Oblivion has to do with its age. The physics in Oblivion were a step up from Morrowind, which really did not have much in the way of physics. Oblivion is now a six year old game, so its graphics and physics are understandably dated.

RE: the OP, I like both Skyrim and Oblivion. It is hard for me to say which I like "better" because that is so subjective. There are some things I like "better" about Oblivion and many things I like "better" about Skyrim. Most of the things I like "better" about Skyrim can be explained by advances in the gaming software over the past six years.

...Where as Oblivion was so diverse they had to focus on making Skyrim more diverse... Seriously, I understand the complaint somewhat (it's rather grey compared to oblivion) but the idea of it being less diverse seems odd to me. Oblivion had green forests, yellow forests, yellow mountains, grey mountains, white mountains and "swamp" aka dark green forest.

Skyrim has yellow/orange forest, green forest, plains, the Reach (essentially rocky/morrowindesque), volcanic tundra, frozen ice sheets, white mountains, barren snow tundra, glaciers, actual swamp AND grey mountains. I'd say Skyrim is more diverse.

Might as well note Morrowind too (minus expansions of course). Grey mountains, Grey plains (ashlands), Volcanic area, Rocky shores (+mushrooms), Reach-esque bit (West Gash), grasslands and swamp.

Eh.. Oblivion is better than Skyrim. Skyrim is better than Oblivion. Etc...

It's all opinions. AS long you don't try to enforce yours, I'm happy...

What is the point of this thread anyways? Asking for opinions, stating your own, or enforcing your own?

I hate to admit it, but its true. I was so stoked over skyrim, i was confident it would blow oblivion out of the water....but after only a few short months, im already completely bored to death of this game. I was STILL playing oblivion when skyrim came out, and having fun....skyrim however has run out of steam in the first lap of the race.

Here's what SKYRIM did BETTER than oblivion...

-Graphics
-Melee Combat
-Archery Combat
-Stealth Kills
-Enchanting
-Dragons
-Non psychic guards

What OBLIVION did BETTER than skyrim...

-EVERYTHING else (but ill name a few for fun)
-Quests
-Magic
-NPCs
-User Interface
-Skills
-Hotkeys
-Armor
-Creatures

let the debate begin!
Welcome to the wonderful world of personal opinion.

I disagree.

Skyrim, in my experience, is more fun to play both in combat and stealth characters. The leveling system is simultaneously more complex yet more intuitive and perks allow for greater customization than before even with the removal of attributes. NPC conversations in real time, especially without the creepy "standing-way-too-close" face zoom is much improved. Animations are universally better and the world not only looks more beautiful but less like something pulled out of someone else's world.

The plot and backstory are also far better than Oblivion. The Great War's aftermath provides excellent background motivation for many of the characters in several questlines, and the dragons are not only implemented into pre-existing lore for the series in a unique way but are also far more fun and interesting to fight than the Daedra. The Thalmor, until now only mentioned in obscure references in the pocket guide, are brought to the forefront and lore is used without being shoved down the player's throat.

I would call Skyrim universally better than Oblivion, in fact. Even the College of Wintergold, my only big disappointment in the game, is better than it's Oblivion counterpart.
