Oblivion is better than Skyrim...here we go again...

Post » Wed May 02, 2012 6:23 pm

Your opinion. It's a matter of opinion. Some people don't like it and other people do.
I never said I didn't like it.I said it's better out of the box than Skyrim, and I believe that.

Skyrim is a great game on it's own and I enjoy playing as that, but as an Elder Scrolls game it leaves much to be desired. I won't go into details on why, since I've already gone over it multiple time in various threads. If you want to know more about it, then check one of those threads.

Sorry, I took the first line of your previous post as sarcasm. Clearly, I was mistaken.

I hate to admit it, but its true. I was so stoked over skyrim, i was confident it would blow oblivion out of the water....but after only a few short months, im already completely bored to death of this game. I was STILL playing oblivion when skyrim came out, and having fun....skyrim however has run out of steam in the first lap of the race.

Here's what SKYRIM did BETTER than oblivion...

-Graphics
-Melee Combat
-Archery Combat
-Stealth Kills
-Enchanting
-Dragons
-Non psychic guards

What OBLIVION did BETTER than skyrim...

-EVERYTHING else (but ill name a few for fun)
-Quests
-Magic
-NPCs
-User Interface
-Skills
-Hotkeys
-Armor
-Creatures

let the debate begin!

and Morrowind is better then Oblivion+Skyrim....and TW2 is a true RPG

damn, always the same things...i've heard the same things when oblivion came out...

I think the key is to see what Skyrim becomes over time. Oblivion out of the box isn't as good as Skyrim out of the box. Let's see how Skyrim is holding up this summer.
^This... Of course Oblivion would be more fun, you can mod the hell out of it to the point it's not even Cyrodiil anymore... But Tamriel.

Give it a year or 2/whenever all the official expansions/dlc release, + mods, and you will change your opinion. Skyrim has an insane amount of potential, it's just waiting to be tapped like Lorkhan's heart :D

Skyrim missed a lot of chances to develop first-class NPC-stories. When I first met Sapphir in Riften, I thought "Wow, let's have a drink together, I'm all ears (and eyes) for you."
Oblivion had a lot of deep NPCs that you could get interested in and attached to.

The very fact that all 3 games are different and offer varied gameplay is what I love about the TES series and Bethesda. Can you honestly say that you would enjoy Skyrim more if was simply a Morrowind or Oblivion set in another land? I really enjoy the fact that in each of these games I had to master and adapt to a different gameplay model.

I know that some people are very upset that spell making did not make it into Skyrim and it is a game breaker for them. However take into consideration that if you played Oblivion as a warrior the game was Mehh. Warrior types are my prefered play choice in any RPG and to me Skyrim is hands down the warriors choice.

Im gonna get a ton of hate here for saying this but Ive never played oblivion to any great lengths. Ive watched it be played for prolonged periods and my friends have shown me several different parts of it but I just couldnt get it into it. Fallout 3 was the first Bethesda game I finished(LOVED IT!) and then new vegas(Yeah i know obsidian but still the similar enough) and it was the fallout series that got me into these games and what caused me to get skyrim.

Oblivion just seemed a little t-rated. You know? A fantasy world but really tame and I didnt like the graphics style as much as fallouts. The skill system in skyrim is better too. You want to be good at sneaking?...yuou have to either train(expensive) or actualy sneak. You earn your silent movement because when your sneak is at 100 you remember all those times you got caught trying to me sneaky and its a measure of how far your character has come. The graphics, the music, and the overall M-rated head chopping setting people on fire mood appeals to me more.

With that said I do plan on playing oblivion someday.....but I havent played a [censored] ton myself yet because after seeing a bunch of it IM just not overly interested right now.

Winener...skyrim

What OBLIVION did BETTER than skyrim...

-EVERYTHING else (but ill name a few for fun)
-Quests- Repetitive like Skyrim but with terrible stories. Granted they were longer but not enough to be redeemed.
-Magic- Sort of, IMO the new casting system is better but spell crafting is needed
-NPCs- NO. They looked like the same old potato and sounded like the same old hag. You could talk to everyone but got nothing out of most interations
-User Interface- Not really, without Darnified UI for Oblivion I could hardly use it. Not to mention the old style just looked bad IMO
-Skills- I don't see how, there are a few less but nothing that ruins the game
-Hotkeys- Sort of, Skyrim just makes it a tad harder to make hotkeys but the quick menu is a lifesaver
-Armor- Don't really see how, Skyrim's looked better and worked about the same
-Creatures- Not at all, Skyrim's creatures were much better and actually felt like part of the environment rather than looking lost. Not to mention that none of them did anything different, it was just melee creatures of various shapes and sizes.

let the debate begin!
There are a few things that Oblivion did better but overall it was a mess.

Oblivion has some things I enjoyed a bit more, NPC's seemed more intelligent, referring to me as Archmage, or Leader of whatever Guild I happened to be in. The Dark Brother Hood was one of my favorite quest lines in Oblivion, as opposed to one of my least favorite in Skyrim. The Main Quest Line was much easier to get svcked into imo, but idk if it was any better or worse than Skyrims, it just svcked me in much quicker. Thieves Guild was also 1000 times better in Oblivion. And some of the cities were much better layout wise in Oblivion. Everything else in Oblivion was kinda meh.

Skyrim however BLOWS Oblivion out of the water in almost everything else other than NPC's, Thieves Guild, Dark Brother Hood, and MQ line. The Graphics crap on Oblivion, Infinite Quest's, Dual Casting I believe is a much better use of magic than making spells, however I wish there were MORE spells to utilize. Dragons!!!! Shouts!!!! Deeper, more expansive dungeon experiences. Gold Flows like snow in Skyrim, which is never a bad thing! The Map is a million times better, and upon seeing the 3D Birds eye view I was like whaaaaat, how am I going to get THERE with that frigen mountain in my way. You actually have to plan and navigate you're travels (if u dont just use the wagon to jump around from hold to hold. BlackReach alone made it worth the buy over Oblivion once I discovered it. Favorites Menu is a godsend as well! That being said, they havent even anounced DLC yet, which is promised to be an 'expansion on the game' and not just bits and pieces added here and there like most DLC nowadays. I'm confident things like better homes, weapons, and the like will be involved in a DLC drop which will put this game fully over the top for me.

Oblivion was a great game, and I played probably close to 700 hours and had 3 diff characters. I played it up until October 2011 but now that I've played Skyrim, I can never go back. For every fault I find, there are 2 or 3 things that make up for it in most cases!

No, I don't want Morrowind 2.0, nor do I want Oblivion act II.

What Skyrim needed to really make it a great game was better writing, quests, companions/followers, and npc's. All of these put together really drag down what could've been really epic. Spellmaking while a sad loss, is not a gamebreaker for me..but a wider variety of spells would've gone a long way to silencing some of the critics who are crying foul over the loss of it.

Off topic I know, but did you know Oblivion was originally released with a teen rating? Then some nvde mod came out and people threw a hissy fit and it was re-released with an M rating. I know I still got the box with "T for Teen" on it :)

My biggest issue with Skyrim isn't the cardboard characters or lack of impact in your choices, those are to be expected from Bethesda. My biggest issue with Skyrim is the way the decided to handle lore. Yes, it makes sense that due to Imperialization the Nords now worship the Alessian Order, but I still don't like it. The game should have focused on the old Nordic pantheon, and what makes Skyrim unique. Instead we have "ZOMG OMG VIKINGS IS SO KEWL!!!11!"

Granted, there was plenty of retcon in Oblivion (Cyrodill was supposed to be a mass jungle with pockets of civilization) but at least they portrayed Imperial culture (that is, no specific culture as Cyrodill is a melting pot) well. Nords are boring, typical "HONOR RAWR!!!! I SO SERIOUS BOUT EVERYTING!! I AM A CONAN THE BARBARIAN IMPERSONATOR!". What happened to those jovial drunkards and spinners of epic tales?

Then there is the fact that even though there are no longer classes, there are less viable play styles and combat based roleplays due to the removal of skills like mysticism, athletics and acrobatics. I don't care how little sense having 25 skills makes, I enjoyed it.

ummmm...

Oblivion did nothing on that list better then Skyrim.

Anyways.

I liked Oblivion very little (Morrowind fan) until I actually sat down and tried my hardest to role play in it. The game is so easy to role play in it blew my mind. Oblivion was great because of this one thing, the voice acting, npcs, quests, everything was pretty dulled down and... stupified as comparison to Morrowind and Skyrim but the role playing is the main thing that made it able to hold ground against Skyrim.

Skyrim is a good game, but not the best it could be.

I can't say either or is better to be honest... there are ups and downs to each game in the series so these "debates" are really just idiotic ways of pissing people off for no reason. Don't make dumb dumb flame threads.

This "Skyrim is a good game, but not the best it could be" is a good point.

But is this not true of everything? Could Skyrim be better given more resources, time and money? Abso 'frikin' lutley. Same could be said for all the software I am part of developing. It could always be better but after a certain amount of time and iterations you have to let it go nd be what it is. I couldnt imagine working on a piece of software for 3 years before it was ever released, you would be shooting yourself in the foot and second guessing with every move eventually.

I am glad they released it as is with flaws an all. Bethesda is getting th emost valuable feedback to help them create the DLC content, yours.

haha I know that actually I was just saying how it DOES FEEL t rated. I wa working at a videogame store when that happened and they actualyl sent us special M rated stickers to put over the letter T on the box! I dont even know if you could unluck it on the xbox version. And all this was before oblivion was even out on ps3!!!...wow that was a long time ago!

The first game in any series is often just a proof of concept. Sequals then take what was great about the original and expand it to the point that the last entry in the series seems totally worthless even tho last year it was your favorite game! I find Skyrim makes fallout 3 seems unplayable and IM hoping a few generations they make skyrim look like crap. I have a huge game collection and so many times I go to replay some of my favorite games and I wonder how I ever played them over and over...the one example that is the opposite for me is halo 2 multiplayer which was so ahead of its time its a shame they took it offline :(

Deep, dark dungeons that required a torch.

...Where? Why do you think "Darker Dungeons" was an Oblivion mod?

Hmm. Oblivion did quite a few quests better, but that did not forgive its generic setting, thrashing of the lore in some questlines (Mages' Guild I'm looking at you) and appalling levelling system, as well as the really air-y feel to it. Seriously, my character might as well be a cloud with arms. With mods though Oblivion was very good.

For me Skyrim is a better experience overall, but Oblivion was better in certain aspects that I care about when playing RPG's: attributes, skills, quests, factions. Unfortunately Skyrim did to Oblivion what Oblivion did to Morrowind: improve technology, bring new features and cut others. I'm quite happy about what Skyrim brings new, but I'm also sad that they cut armor slots, skills, the [censored] acrobatics - my favourite skill in TES, spellmaking, attributes... I am of the opinion perks and attributes could have worked together quite nicely

minimizing, all is relative, who would want the same product? I never liked Oblivion anyway etc etc.

I respect those who simply enjoy Skyrim more. I wonder if you will feel the same way in 6 months? But if you do, you'll get no argument from me.

Those who want more, who point out missing choices and features should be listened to; the product no longer is meeting their needs. Skyrim meets your needs. For them, as well as myself, pehaps some other company will find a way to find us. They've built an action adventure with some role playing in it for you- it's called Skyrim. We'd like more role playing, more interaction with NPC's, more character building choices.

It is known as looking back at things with rose tinted glasses. Many times we enjoy the memories of things from our past because of how they made us feel at that current point in time. Not by how good they were. For example I loved grim fandango and will often list it as one of my favorite games of all time. Yet as an advlt I find it hard to sit through the game because of how far technology has come that it feels tedious to play such an outdated game. What I enjoyed most of the game was playing it with my father and having bonding time with him. Not because it was the best of the best at the time.

All I'm going to say is if you gave arena, daggerfall, morrowind, oblivion the graphics that skyrim has which one would stand taller.
Let me also state that I love all these games but I do feel that they cutting to much from each iteration.
