Oblivion is better than Skyrim...here we go again...

Post » Wed May 02, 2012 9:16 pm

I hate to admit it, but its true. I was so stoked over skyrim, i was confident it would blow oblivion out of the water....but after only a few short months, im already completely bored to death of this game. I was STILL playing oblivion when skyrim came out, and having fun....skyrim however has run out of steam in the first lap of the race.

Here's what SKYRIM did BETTER than oblivion...

-Graphics
-Melee Combat
-Archery Combat
-Stealth Kills
-Enchanting
-Dragons
-Non psychic guards

What OBLIVION did BETTER than skyrim...

-EVERYTHING else (but ill name a few for fun)
-Quests
-Magic
-NPCs
-User Interface
-Skills
-Hotkeys
-Armor
-Creatures

let the debate begin!

Agreed. Oblivion is a much better game. There's no excuse for Skyrim to be so sub-par. What a bummer.

I think the key is to see what Skyrim becomes over time. Oblivion out of the box isn't as good as Skyrim out of the box. Let's see how Skyrim is holding up this summer.

It's my favorite game of 2012, but yea, Oblivion and Morrowind are the better games. Skyrim just doesn't have the replay value. I remember in Morrowind and Oblivion, I was so impatient, I wanted to start so many different types of characters and try them all out at once. Skyrim? Not so much. After this character, I'll just kind of hope that mods fill in the slack.

DLC or mods cannot change the lack of NPC interaction or the character build depth in Skyrim.

I'm not going to say Oblivion is a better game, but i will say that Cyrodiil was a lot more interesting than Skyrim.

This is very subjective. In my opinion Skyrim does everything better but that is purley preference and my fun factor. To me Skyrim is simply more fun all around and I simply enjoy creating new builds and playing through the game again more. I have 3 going on at once and each has different skills and has take different paths.

Oblivion was a great game as was Morrowind before it. I simply enjoy Skyrim more.

Um no. Oblivion was a travesty. Oblivion is the only game I ever purchased where I had to shut it down after only a couple hours of play and start modding it to make it even desirable to play. At least with Skyrim, I was able to disable the compass and marker "features" before I started playing.

I agree, oblivion was way more challenging and quests were more rewarding, also Dungeons were better, not in variety, but how it felt like you were trying to survive. Deep, dark dungeons that required a torch.

i find that older games tend to be enjoyed more than latest ones. Morrowind > oblivion > skyrim for me. Although the cliffracers are a pain in the ass and i cant fus roh dah them down

Agreed. Oblivion is the better game. Skyrim is dumbed down in comparison (which is saying a lot...)

The few things Skyrim does better are things that should logically improve over time. In terms of actual design choices and direction, it's mostly a decline.

That isn't to say Skyrim is a bad game though. I still enjoyed it a lot, and will probably end up loving it in a couple of years when there's an abundance of mods available.

When Oblivion was released it was shot down by many people as being the most disgraceful thing to happen in the TES series. Now Skyrim is out and people boast about how much of a good game it was. I can't wait till TES VI and everyone is talking about how Skyrim is a far better game.

Your right, Oblivion isn't as good out the box as Skyrim...it's better, much better... and far, far, far deeper.

Despite all it's faults and bugs, and all the hatred some people have for it, Oblivion was a pretty damn good game. Much deeper and far more memorable than Skyrim is. I don't know what went wrong during development, but Skyrim has fallen flat, and that's a shame because it had potential to really blow peoples socks off (including the old timer fans)

Your opinion. It's a matter of opinion. Some people don't like it and other people do.

For me, unmodded Oblivion is unplayable. A leveling system that rewards me for using minor skills instead of major skills is the worst design decision in the history of video games. "Ooh, I want to make a master swordsman, guess I better spend the first half of the game using clubs."

Nah, Skyrim is better. Played both Oblivion and Morrowind extensively, and Skyrim is my favorite.

I agree with this. IMO Oblivion was the worst of the bunch. But, see, everybody is different. Lovin Skyrim.

Of course and everyone is entitled to their opinions. I think the bigger problem is that Skyrim is different. Most people don't do well with change. But I am sure that most of those people who gripe about Skyrim will still be playing it in 3 years time modded or not.

I love all TES games. There is not a series of fantasy games out there that give you as much depth as any TES game can. Do I think some are better then others? Yeah, I think Morrowind whoops both Oblivion's and Skyrims butt. Yet I still loved and enjoyed Oblivion and Skyrim. I think we should consider ourselves lucky. Bethesda could have decided to start doing Fallout and let the TES series die. Then those of us who are fans of the Epic Fantasy genre would be left with nothing but short 30 hour long linear games that don't even compare to the worst of TES.
