Oblivion Combat Freeze

Post » Sun Jan 16, 2011 11:36 pm

Sorry for my awful English, I am french.

So, the problem is this : often, in combat, the game freeze in a weird way : the image is stuck ; but not the HUD, the game continue, I can hear the music, the combat fx, I can see my life decrease but I remain helpless. I did some research ; I think it's an audio problem but after disabling all the audio codec, the game still freeze. I also tried disabling mods, but nothing. Any help would by appreciated !

Thanks :) :tes:

the game is still find, but, your controls don't work? Try disabling music in the oblivion.ini located in My Games\Oblivion. Find the setting:

bmusicenabled=1

change the one, to a zero, and try again.

made sure you are editing the ini located in my games, do NOT alter the oblivion_default.ini in the oblivion install folder.

as a test, also disable sound,

bsoundenabled=1

you will have no sound.... but, this is just a test. see what happens.

I was indeed twiking with the wrong ini file. So I did what you tell me to do, and I was able to win 3 battles with only a small 1-2 second freeze. Wath does that mean ?
Thanks a lot for your dedication :)

try installing the klite basic codec pack. If you already have it, uninstall it, reboot, and then reinstall it. Be sure it is set to repair broken codecs, and that ffdshow is set to ignore oblivion.

In fact, I already have the mega pack, and I already unistall/reinstall it. However, how do I make ffdshow ignore oblivion ? :tes:

Edit : ffdshow already ignore oblivion.

Edit 2 : Actually, I discovered that the game somtimes " unfreeze " after a random period of time.

You mean all my background process, like the one that you can see with ctrl+alt+suppr/Processus ? Do you want the list ? Of all of them ?

Edit : there is one spell in particular who make my game freeze : soultrap.

Edit 2 : What is the codec mentioned http://www.techsupportforum.com/forums/f59/oblivion-freeze-issue-315789.html

Deamon tool, ad-awar, the volume controller, the realtek audio controller, and the Nvidia parameters. The rest is the usual internet connexion stuff.

No, the game still freeze. :(

Edit : Is there a way to refresh the image ? Because I can still play ( I can move, use spells, attack, block, acess the main menu, my inventory... ), but the image is stuck. Ican hear myself playing, but I can't see it.

With both sound and music disabled like so:

bMusicEnabled=0
bSoundEnabled=0

I can confirm that the 3D graphics continue to freeze while the HUD and menu continue to function as if nothing's wrong. The sound fx and music also function during freezes when they're enabled. In all my years of gaming, this is the first time I've seen a 3D screen crash with everything else working.

The bug also shows up while running vanilla Oblivion with no mods.

In my particular setup, I did have to add the following lines to solve a CPU related stutter glitch:

bUseThreadedAI=1
iNumHWThreads=2

A few more notes about my machine:

Intel e5200
Nvidia Geforce GTX 260
Forceware 185.81 Drivers (Older drivers, but released 3+ years after Oblivion)
Windows XP SP3
2 GB Ram

Many users have reported this freeze bug over the years, but nobody seems to have a solution. With the bug, the game is pretty much unplayable since it repeats in the same places.

Lhondhre,

Not too long after replying to this thread, I pinpointed the problem. After eliminating audio as a suspect, I disabled all of my 3D settings. Suddenly the game stopped freezing. From there I was able to narrow it down to Anti-Aliasing. Once disabled, the game stopped freezing.

From there I had to figure out a way to get AA working without freezing.

Since I own a Geforce card, I run a program called nHancer to create game specific 3D profiles for all my games. In there, there's a setting called "Enhance in-game AA setting." After checking that box, AA now works without any more freezing.

Warning: If you're using an Nvidia video card, nHancer only works with drivers newer than the 256.xx series.
