Oblivion - Constant Crash

Post » Wed May 12, 2010 8:03 am

Hello, I have a problem with Oblivion and very frequent crashes.
Oblivion usually crashes between 1 - 30 minutes of gameplay.
This is un-usual because my system more than meets the requirements.
The crash I experience is the game suddenly freezing, then the screen will either go green, red or grey and the a loud noise comes out the speakers.
The only other time I get this is if I play Crysis on High settings after about an hour, or the witcher on high however I'm running oblivion with no HDR, Bloom or AA with 1280 x 720 resolution.
Which should be easy to run.

I have the following Mods:
Unofficial Oblivion Patch
(Both Expansions)
Crowded Cities
Streamline 2.1
300_artifacts
Multiple creature summoning
RenGuardOverhaul

PC Specification:
Processor: Pentium® Dual-Core CPU E5500 @ 2.80GHz

Has anybody else had this?
Does anybody know a fix?
If possible, I'd simply like to know what is happening inside my PC for the crash to happen.

Thank you
Sausfest

Hard to be sure but from your description sounds like either Heat build up causing the system to shut down to protect itself from damage (since you say Crisis does the same after some time !) or an underpowered Powersupply that cannot provide enough power to keep things running under full usage for a period of time (as the system heats up from heavy usage the PSU output also drops (PSUs can output more power in cooler environments) due to the added heat of running and a point is reached that the power no longer can keep the system stable.)

I've been testing more, I deliberately set the specs to max and it crashed almost instantly.
Directly after it crashed I checked for heat and there was none atall.
The comment about the power supply was an interesting one, thank you very much. I don't know much about power supply's atall. I bought a rubbish PC and put many high spec equipment in it.
I pulled open the thing and checked the Power supply Specs

Power supply Specifications:
(I don't know what this means, literally just writing what it said)

AC Input: 220 - 240 Volts
~ 3.15A, 50Hz

DC Output:
250W
(+3.3v & +5v = 11w MAX)
(+12v1&12V2= 180W MAX)

All of my Components are listed above, I don't know there power requirements atall.
Would this affect my system atall? Do I need another power supply?

I think JDfan has it right. Your power supply is inadequate to the task. 250 watts just isn't enough.

What would you recommend for a new power supply?
I'm sorry, I have no idea about power needs. I'll be sure to buy on tomorrow morning first thing, if this is the solution to the problem i've had for so long...
I will be so SO grateful!

Can't really answer that question. I googled your computer but did not get a definitive answer.

In general though, I would think a good quality power supply in the 450 watt to 650 watt range should be adequate.

A better answer could be provided if you post a "Dxdiag" report:

Run (XP) or Start (Vista or 7), type in "dxdiag" (without the quotes), save the report to a desktop text file (default). Copy and paste the results (the whole thing) here in your thread.

Hello sausfest!
Oblivion is a tough game to get to run stable. But well worth it.
First off... you do need a better PSU I recommend at least a 500 Watt and don't go cheap, when it comes to power supplies you get what you pay for. Check out "Toms hardware reviews"
Also....... do you have BOSS ( Better Oblivion Sorting Software ) to put your mods in the proper order? This is VERY important especially if you intend to install more mods.

Another thing I noticed when I play is that if I happen to do some quest steps out of sequence....ie...I had already done some things involving the Nirnroot Quest and when I went to see Sendarion as soon as I opened his door the game crashed.

SAVE Often and it might be a good idea to copy a save game to another folder in case you get a corrupted save and don't want to start over. If you have more questions feel free to email me as the subject of Oblivion crashing has been dealt with for many years and is quite extensive. I'll be glad to help as the modding community has helped me for many years beginning with Morrowind. :intergalactic:

Hey guys,
This morning I bought a new 580W power supply for my PC.
I'm not happy to announce this, but it made no difference atall. Still crashes my whole PC after 5 minutes at a semi-high setting or 20 mins on a low one.

Maybe my Graphics card or RAM is faulty? Maybe even my processors.
How would I test these? I'm gonna run a memtest now to see if the RAM is bad.

Any other suggestions on what could be wrong? Thanks so much for your help so far.

I've just ran Memtest86+ from this an ISO imagine before windows boot up. From here: http://forum.corsair.com/forums/showthread.php?t=38201

No errors detected.

The only other components in my PC are my motherboard and my Graphics card.
I'm gonna try and run games without my graphics card and see what happens.

How would I test my motherboard?
I have no idea what else it could be, I'm very amateur at this and would appreciate any suggestions or advice.

Thank you
Sausfest

Are you going to replace the PSU (power supply)?
Decide that because graphics cards and PSUs are very much dependent on each other for peak performance.

Does your computer run well other than the problem with Oblivion?

Hello veteranpants!
Oblivion does not play nice with 64 bit systems. Probably because of its age. What resolution are you running the game at? Make sure your graphics card drivers are up to date and if you're playing with the settings on ultra high try lowering them. I learned that if your desk top resolution is different from the game play resolution that this can cause crashes at start up.

Hope this helps :obliviongate:

I run on a 64 bit O/S, and don't have any issues. More likely it is a background process, or codec, that is biting you in the rear.

Does your laptop literally shut itself off when you try and play? Or, does the game just dump you back to the desktop?

@Saus: I think there are utilities available to 'stress test' your system, might be something to try. In the mean time, can you post a FULL dxdiag? (preferably right after a reboot, and give the computer a couple minutes to finish sorting itself out.)

Download and install "OBSE v 19b" , then "Fast Exit 2" and "Pluggy v125" These should take care of the crash problem. It may not help with the Oblivion has stopped running problem but deal with one problem at a time. I try to download all my mods from TES nexus. But if you have trouble finding a utility or a mod search google. It works well

Hey Guys,
I'm back and better than ever. The problem was my new AMD Graphics card 4600.
I'm not sure but when I replaced it with a new (slightly slower) NVIDIA Geforce 9500 is's worked fine ever since.
Prehaps a part of the components was corrupted etc, the power solution made no difference.

Thank you so much to everybody on the forum for your help!
Especially JDFan and Qwaxalot for there fast and incredibly useful advice.

Now i'm going to re-install Crysis :flamethrower: :cryvaultboy:
