Oblivion crashes at startup load

Will it be safe to install FCOM after this guide or should I install it before?

Not sure what you mean. Which guide? Before what?

I would recommend reading through the guide first, then installing FCOM.

No, it doesn't matter if you are using Steam. The only thing that is different (and it's not that different) is OBSE. There is an extra file that needs to be installed if using mods that require OBSE.

Not that familiar with Tomlong's guide but I'd definitely recommend focusing on the FCOM install before starting to add lots of other mods. If you like Tomlong's guide, follow it in conjunction with the opening post in http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1160205-relz-fcom-convergence-and-ufcom/. Start from a clean install. Patch the game to 1.2.0416 if needed. Load a new game just to check that it seems to work. Install OOO, i.e. OOO 1.33 Complete patched to OOO 1.34 Beta 5, and load a new game again just to check that it seems to work OK. Then focus on the core FCOM install and start a new game after finishing it - now doing the starting dungeon and beyond so you'll notice if there are any issues.

After that, add one or a couple of mods at a time while checking for issues/stability. You can do this while playing - in fact, it's often best as you can check it out as you go then. One upside with having a core FCOM install that's stable is that you can fall back on it if something happens. The same for adding just a couple of mods at a time - if something gets messed up it's easy to fall back. That is if you save a lot - which is recommended.

The most common mistake is probably missing resources causing missing meshes/textures in game or even CTDs. So make sure MMM.bsa is renamed to FCOM_Convergence_Mart's Monster Mod.bsa etc.

It's working! F'reals this time!

Thanks all. I'll make a backup of my FCOM-ready install for future modding.

No sound as in NONE (wind, birds, voices, footsteps) or just some voices?

The obvious is to check your sound settings (turn volume up) but you probably did that. If using wry bash there are ini tweaks and one maybe to diable sound. This would tell you if it was turned off in the ini file.

Final thing, I had a similar issue (but no sounds for many voices) and it turned out to be my Win7 sound configuration for headphones.

Best guesses I have :)

Check to see if the sound folder is still in oblivion\data :) Kidding.

How about when starting a new game? Do you have any sound related mods? This is a first for me!

And it's back. Seems like there is a problem with the mute button on my keyboard breaking sound in some games.

At least it is good to know it is a system issued and not Oblivion. That has enough problems already :)

Update: Nope, it's not the mute button. I have no idea what's causing it. Should I make a new thread for this?

A new thread would get more looks I would think. So post your load order if you start one.

I had a similar crashing issue some time ago which was solved with removing all the old saved games from the saves folder.
