I recently re-installed oblivion after having taken a break from it for about a year and everytime I startup the game it ctd's instantly.
I have no mods installed onlt the official patches (which are all up to date) and I tried reinstalling the game with no mods or patches and again the game still ctd's instantly when started up.
I raed all the faq's and other peoples reports on the forums and couldnt find any possible solution to this problem, I never ahd this problem on my old oblivion game which had over 200 mods running.

My pc is all up to date with the latest drivers and the hardware more than meets the recommended system requirements, I defragmented the hard drive before and after each installation of Oblivion.
My pc specs are as follows:

Windows Viata Home Premium 64bit (with all the updates for it)
3062MB RAM
Intel Core i7 920 2.67GHZ (8 CPU's)
Over 400 GB of space free on my hard drive
DirectX 10
My Video Card is an ATI Radeon 4850 HD with 1781 MB memory with driver version 8.17.0010.1041
I juse use the standard sound system with 2.1 speakers, no specific sound card or anything

Please help me with this problem, the only solutuion I can see so far is buying another copy of Oblivion and seeing if that works

Did you try deleting the Oblivion.INI?

Make sure it's the right .ini file. Your .ini file is found in My Documents/My Games/Oblivion folder...it is the Configuration Settings file named Oblivion
