Oblivion CTD

Post » Wed Sep 01, 2010 8:38 pm

I am probably posting this in the wrong forum area, but I had problems making up my mind whether to post this in the hardware/software section or the mod section. I ended up with the mod section since I'm 110% certain the problem is related to mods, and not the game itself.

My issue is that Oblivion starts up and everything works as intended up until the point where I start to move around in the initial prison cell. The game then proceeds to give me a CTD.

I am using OBSE 0019b for the record.

This is the load order, set by BOMM/BOSS (and incidentally the list of the mods I am using  ):

Oblivion.esm
Oscuro's_Oblivion_Overhaul.esm (1.34b5)
Better Cities Resources.esm (4.8.3)
Unofficial Oblivion Patch.esp (3_2_0)
UOP Vampire Aging & Face Fix.esp
Oblivion Citadel Door Fix.esp
DLCShiveringIsles.esp
Unofficial Shivering Isles Patch.esp (1_4_0)
Better Cities .esp (4.7.0 - permanent resources esp)
Natural_Weather_HDR_by_Max_Tael.esp (2.1.3 - this is the bugfixed one that BOSS told me to download from TESNexus)
Natural_Habitat_by_Max_Tael.esp (2.1.3)
Natural_Water_by_Max_Tael.esp (2.1.3)
Brighter_Torches.esp (2.1.3)
DLCHorseArmor.esp
Oscuro's_Oblivion_Overhaul.esp (lite version)
OOO-Water_Weeds.esp
OOO-Map_Markers_Stock.esp
OOO-No_Guild_Ownership.esp
OOO-Potions.esp
OOO-WaterFish.esp
Knights.esp
Natural_Vegetation_by_Max_Tael.esp (2.1.3)
Harvest [Flora].esp (3.0.1)
Harvest [Flora] - Shivering Isles.esp (3.0.1)
DZ_Auto_Harvest.esp (1.1)
No psychic guards v 1.2.esp
Kobu's Character Advancement System.esp
Kobu's Personality Enhancer.esp
Kobu's Lighter Backpack Mod.esp
Better Cities Full.esp (4.8.3)
Better Cities - VWS of the IC.esp (4.8.3)
Better Imperial City.esp (4.8.3)
Better Imperial City FPS Patch.esp (4.8.3)
Better Cities Full FPS Patch.esp (4.8.3)
Better Cities - No LEYAWIIN Flooding.esp (4.8.3)
[GFX]_Initial_Glow-self.esp

I have also installed Qarl's Texture Pack 3 (in OMOD version), with the QTP3 UOP32 Compatibility Patch - DarNified UI omod - and the IFT Improved Facial Textures as found @ TESNexus.

I've run the Archive Invalidation script in OBMM.

At this point I'm at my wits end, ready to tear out my hair and claw out my eyes in frustration, so any suggestions or direct help would be highly appreciated!

Thank you in advance anyone who bothers to try to give me some assistance here! :-)

I would recommend Wrye Bash especially with Better Cities to import the cells, but also for the included Vampire aging fix and citadel door fix, which is an option in bashed patch.
Are you also using the latest version of UOP supplements?

Best advice is start with one mod at a time. I would try without the Max Teal mods first.

Thank you for the response!

This is quite embarassing, because I have discovered that even vanilla Oblivion CTD's as soon as I start moving around in the imperial prison cell - so obviously it's not mod-related at all (and yes, I deleted the oblivion folder in the Windows 7 Saved Games folder to create new ini files). :( So I guess it's back to the drawing board and start looking for hardware reasons instead, which means the problem belongs to a different subforum.

The problem was solved by doing some simple Compatilibity mode modifications to Oblivion.exe. Why I didn't think of this in the first place is a mystery to me. Disabling Visual Themes, Desktop Composition and setting Compatibility Mode to Vista SP2 made everything work. Oh well, won't do that mistake again the future. :)

And a small update on the problem. The compatibility modes fixed the problem temporarily, but the game proceeded to CTD again quite heavily. I tried playing it in Windows XP (Which I happen to have on dual boot due to other old games), and was quite puzzled when I got CTD's there too.

Then a thought struck me in regards to my soundcard - an Asus Xonar DX that I bought recently. One of the issues that always happens when the game CTDs is that the sound goes into oscillation. So, I entered the BIOS and enabled the onboard soundcard, then disabled the Asus card in Windows XP and started the game. And guess what? It seems to be working. So I did a little googling, and came upon this thread:

*facepalm*

At least I can play the game now (I most sincerely hope!), and just swap around the jacks when I jump over to Windows 7 again. :)
