Steam has the GOTY, and is moddable. You can also get it through Direct2Drive, but you can't mod that version (iirc).

If you mean the other sort of downloading your mouth will be stuffed with birds.

Steam, Direct to drive. However, I'd purchase a physical copy. God only knows whatever copy protection schemes online retailers use, which could cause havoc with modded games.

If you can't (or don't want to) use Steam, there's always eBay, Amazon, or whatever other online purveyor of fine "gameage" you might prefer - for the DVD version(s), that is. And that's probably still the best way, overall.

Either way, it's cheap as chips nowadays.

The Steam version, which I use, works perfectly fine and is completely modable. Indeed the people at Valve bent over backwards to make sure that OBSE worked with the Steam version so I won't have any badmouthing of steam here.

The Direct2Drive version can use "conventional" mods. But who wants to be so limited? Get the steam or DVD version instead.

Just trust me when I say buy the physical copy. It's almost always cheaper, and I have found it a hell'uve a ton less hassle when modding it. It's just a real pain in the neck sometimes if you get the digital copy.

Edit: I also got mine from D2D however, so I'm not sure about the steam version, although it will still probably be cheaper just to buy it from game stop or amazon :P

The Steam version is compatible with OBSE, and therefore with all OBSE plugins. Both Steam and D2D versions are compatible with non-OBSE-based mods (anything using .esp/.esm files and/or asset files like .nif and .dds files). Not having OBSE compatibility ought to be a deal-breaker for anyone visiting this forum, so go with the Steam version. Wasn't it on sale this week? Seem to remember hearing that it was.

Its actually pretty cheap on steam for the vanilla game, SI and all the plugins for $24.99. They did have an awesome sale earlier(which is how I got my copy) for $7 for the vanilla and SI and $9 for the deluxe edition. The steam version just requires you to be online the first time you play it after installing it. It works fine with mods, I havent had a problem yet and I'm running about 15 mods right now.
