Oblivion + Fallout 3 = Skyrim?

Post » Thu Sep 29, 2011 4:48 am

I'm happy about the levelling system, but not so happy about other aspects of Fallout 3 making their way into TES. Namely the perks, cinematics, and children.

i recall there having been perks in both morrowind and Oblivion. they just werent straight up selectable. and i also remember there being a few cinematics in both of those as well.

nothing is even 10% original anymore I already make a list of things taken from Beth's games let alone other companies/authors.

The story will be though, but it will be mediocre at best

Traps were better in Fallout 3 than in Oblivion, (they did more damage, could actually potentially kill you) but New Vegas perfected them. In Fallout 3 and Oblivion the traps were often telegraphed or obvious. You basically had to be moving extremely fast and carelessly to blunder into a trap. In New Vegas the actually trap mechanics and damage was the same, but the level designers actually set up the traps like a real person would, with the intent to hide them from you until it was too late, or position them in such a way as to trick you into stumbling into them. It was great and felt real.

That said, yeah, Skyrim is incorporating a lot of the mechanics and fixes Fallout 3 made over Oblivion, further tweaked and improved I assume. I think having to work with a different stat and RPG system (SPECIAL) in the Fallout games really improved Bethesda's design sensibilities and helped them think about what was and was not working with the Elder Scrolls system.

And I don't know why anyone that is a fan of the open-world gameplay of the Elder Scrolls series would NOT play Fallout 3 or New Vegas. Very similar gameplay, only you have guns instead of bows and fire-axes instead of battle-axes, and a post-apocalyptic world instead of a fantasy one. It's like saying you'll no longer eat one of your favorite foods because it's being served on a different colored plate. A lot of the changes in Skyrim that seem earth-shattering to some people on these forums are old hat for those that have been playing Bethesda's most recent games.

Pretty much is..

But your the one who thinks that the Alpha build means they are not done with graphics haha no..

Actually that is the exact definition of what alpha means they are still adding assets at this point. As a matter of fact we haven't even seen a beta built yet. Let alone the finished product. I imagine the actual game will be jaw dropping even on the consoles. Also they are using a different engine, so it should look, and run substantially better then Fallout 3 did.

ya.. they work on graphics first especially if they are going to make a promo build to show off their game. Software (engine which is SAME one they used for Oblivion and FO3 just heavily revamped) can only go so far hardware is what limits Beth and it has been the same for 6 years and that point been reached a long time ago so they sacrifice something for better graphics at this point as seen.

Skyrim is unique, takes things Oblivion did well, has the epic scope of Morrowind, and takes the great things of Fallout 3 and mashes it together in a gargantuan mortar and pestle.

Personally the only thing that matters to me is game play, followed by performance, followed by story. With graphics a little dot in the far back of my cares. That being said every thing we have seen, and heard so far has demonstrated significantly better performance and visuals to oblivion, or fallout. I would have loved to have owned oblivion for the consoles, but i couldn't because of how poorly it performed on them. So I try fallout 3, and it runs good despite looking like crap. Now I see footage of skyrim running on an xbox 360 looking not only about ten times better, but also running at a higher frame rate then oblivion, or fallout. This has already salitfied my opinion of the performance of this new engine.

I have my second game of FO3 going right now and so far I've felt good about how they've learned from each previous game and are bringing some of the best things forward into Skyrim. One thing I'm wondering about and I don't know if we've heard anything about it yet because I'm trying avoid spoilers, (so why am I mentioning this? haha), is whether or not there will something like the assassination squads in FNV? The Enclave in FO3 are like those assassination squads too. If so, and I hope they are in Skyrim, that's going to make it more fun. Random encounters, radiant story..it's going to be great.

Wise post is wise. (I loved to find cleverly hidden frag mines, even when they blowed in my face and crippled my character :P)

Other thing they added from new vegas: Cooking! :celebration:

You answered your own question there. I play RPGs for the fantasy settings. I love Elves, dragons, sword and bows, magic, all of it. I don't like sci-fi. I don't like post-apocalyptic settings. I have no interest in games with guns and fire-axes and modern gas-powered vehicles, ect. I want a game with horses, swords, bows, thatched roofs and stone-walled castles.

Oblivion 30fps

Fallout 3 was 30fps

Skyrim is at 30fps

Consoles can only run at a locked Frame rate either at 60 (which is best) or at 30

and again the engine is not new its the same engine used in previous titles rewritten.

Magic Mines

Oblivion's traps were boring predictable and non lethal though anything is an improvement over them

There are spells that act as different types of magic mines.
