I heard from a few sources that elements from both Oblivion and Fallout 3 were going into the new ES game Skyrim. So, being I'd never played that other game, I thought I'd get my hands on a copy of Fallout 3 just to get a feel of the other half of what may be going into Skyrim. I'm up to level 8 in Fallout 3 so far, and I'm telling you... If they incorporate these two games just right Skyrim may be their best ES yet! For starters, I haven't put Fallout 3 down (much) since I got it a few days ago.
I'm not suggesting to run out and buy the game, but if you're unfamiliar with Fallout 3 and can't stop speculating about the upcoming Skyrim, you should at least rent it. Fallout 3 is one of Skyrim's parents, after all. The first thing you should know is that you'll be dealing with a post-apocalyptic American future and not the Medieval style setting of TES games.
What I've enjoyed about Fallout 3 so far... The types of enemies you run into seem like they're generated not just by what level you are. It's also based on where you explore and wander to. I still run into level 1 enemies from time to time, but I run into a few things I'm better off running away from. Some areas I travel through, I feel confidant about my survival... and feel almost completely safe. Other areas, I have just a chance of surviving if I take a full arsenal with me and stock a dozen or more medkits... and yes, I'll only have a chance at surviving. This is similar to what I hear about Skyrim, Also.
The traps in Fallout 3 are both clever and elaborate. I've unwittingly run into more than a few. Traps will be included in Skyrim, I hear.
The AI is very good... Yes, some enemies will flee if you beat them down into a near-death state. Radiant AI is in Skyrim, I hear.
