Oblivion vs. Fallout 3

Post » Thu May 19, 2011 7:06 am

This topic is basically which game did you prefer more. Oblivion or Fallout 3?

Not a TES vs. Fallout series but plainly those 2 games.

Which game do you prefer and which game would you reccomnend someone getting?

Personally I prefer Oblivion because of the better free roam, unique monsters, nice combat, nice graphics, and its replay value.

What you guys think? and please post why you think this way

Both are great games. I got bored of roaming around Fallout and found myself fastraveling to every possible location. The whol post apocolyptic world just bored me.

While both games are great in their own right, I'd prefer Oblivion because I like the more medieval setting. The 50's theme get old FAST with Fallout 3.

It is a tough choice but after much consideration I would have to go with Oblivion. I wanted to play that game for 2 years before I got the chance. Overall I probably spent more time on Fallout 3 but I just love the TES series.

Oblivion had more things to do, in Fall out you see same monsters consistently and i didn't like the Karma part of the game to be honest, restricted my roleplay because it defined if i was good or bad for me instead of letting me figure that for myself.

you can figure that out for your self - its just there to say you killed person x your bad - your character can always regain the positive karmatic effects of doing good deeds. its the same as - kill a person in oblivion gaurd sends you to prison

I prefer Oblivion, but would recommend Fallout 3 to a new player. Its more polished and "ready for prime time". Oblivion was a more enjoyable game for me, but only after a liberal application of mods to correct some irritations. I have almost no mods on Fallout 3 - it doesn't need them in the same way.

Maybe I'm biased since I started with Oblivion, but that's the one I prefer; it's tentatively the one I'd recommend, but I guess it really comes down to whether the person in question prefers mediaeval or post-apocalyptic! Which I'm not saying to be clever, just my opinion.

I also tend to prefer green trees over wall-to-wall breige, so that's another point for Oblivion too. :hehe:

Karma and Law are two different things. Karma is like the fame and infamy stat in Oblivion, except it is completely reversible. You can blow up an entire town but get all that karma back by donating water to a bum. In Oblivion, you murder someone in front of others, one way or another you will have to pay for it.

In Fallout, if you kill someone, all you have to do is run out of town for a few days for them to forgive you.

There is no reason I've found for being a good character in Fallout other than having that warm, fuzzy feeling. In Oblivion, at least to some degree there are consequences for doing crime.

There are some crimes in FO3 where you don't get a clean slate. I forget the exact details, but some of the more well-concealed player stats can't be undone, as I discovered when a bug ramped up my kill count and I started getting fairly hostile dialogue in spite of having a high karma. This tends to be faction-specific, however: so in my case I got some grief from the Rivet City inhabitants but not elsewhere.

Fallout 3 was definitely a step up from Oblivion, and fixed many of its issues (although, that shouldn't be the case at all as it is a separate franchise). But then again, some of those fixes and the overall realisation weren't exactly a spot on, so I'd say, between those two games, it's a pretty close call in favor of Fallout 3.

Fallout 3, because I enjoyed exploring it more than I did Oblivion. I always had to make a conscious effort to explore in Oblivion. On the other hand I couldn't get enough of it in Morrowind and Fallout 3. I must have scoured Fallout 3's map a handful of times, while I know there are places in Oblivion I've never even come near. Not because it's a bigger map, but because I just felt no non-quest based motivation to go to those places.

Apparently they are allowed, since a moderator moved this thread to this forum and didn't lock it.

Anyway, on-topic: Oblivion for me. Couldn't play Fallout 3. Sorry I even bought it.

They say Fallout 3 is oblivion with guns, I say oblivion is fallout 3 with swords and magic.

Fallout 3 all the way, I don't hate oblivion it is a masterpiece of a game but Fallout 3 is a lot better in my opinion. I've always been more of a sci fi guy than fantasy.

I prefer Oblivion. Fallout 3 is fun, but Oblivion simply has more to do. I don't really care if the quests and dialogue aren't as deep, it's a lot easier to roleplay, the modding community is better, and the world has infinitely more to do. I love Fallout 3, but Oblivion beats it.

EDIT: Oh, and I'd recommend a new player to play Oblivion first, I suppose. It doesn't really matter, as they're completely different games, but Oblivion is "simpler" than Fallout 3, so it may be easier to play if new to Bethesda's stuff.

I have put the exact same hours into both games, and equal amount of content explored in both. That two things that make me prefer Oblivion is, the respawning dungeons and the Medieval setting.

Edit: What Fallout 3 had that Oblivion did not was the gory limb dismembering.

I prefer Oblivion as a game but I would recommend starting with Fallout 3 simply because the level scaling is not as harsh

Then I would recommend playing Oblivion
