I finally got to feel Oblivion with mods, and it definitively is a very different beast from the console version. Still don't find it to be more roleplaying friendly for me, can't put my finger on why, but mods for eating, sleeping and so on never felt natural for me in Morrowind or Oblivion, Skyrim is the first game where it fits perfectly for me.
I went through something like this last April. I'd been playing Skyrim for a few months and I started to want to play Oblivion again. I love Skyrim's rugged landscape, but it's refreshing to come back to Cyrodiil again. I spent over five months playing the game this year, which must be the longest I've played Oblivion since released. I've had my problems with Oblivion in the past but this time the game really "clicked" with me.
I wonder if Bethesda will ever create a colorful, peaceful-feeling game world like this again. The trend these days seems to be toward darker, harsher environments. I love the grittier game worlds (I'm playing Fallout 3 right now) but I also like to have a change of pace too. I have a feeling the wonderfully bucolic atmosphere of Oblivion is something that probably can't be fully recaptured.
I always liked coming back to Oblivon since it just feels very peaceful. Not to mention many games take themselves so seriously that everything ends up feeling forced. So coming back to Oblivion after that does feel like a big breath of fresh air.
I enjoy some gritty worlds, like Fallout 3 and Wasteland 2, mostly because while still gritty, it does not feel forced and still has it's silly moments to balance the gritty moments.
