Oblivion for a Morrowind Player

Post » Mon Dec 20, 2010 3:30 am

First of all, sorry if this isn't allowed, I just want some opinions of Morrowind players.

So, I've been playing Morrowind since forever, and I played Oblivion for a while, and I've decided to pick it back up. It svcks, imo. I thought I'd ask y'all if you've ever came across various mods that fix it for those of us that like Morrowind. I just would love to be able to play with the better stealth abilities, more modability etc.

I didn't want to ask in the Oblivion forums, because no one would understand me, there. all I'd get is "Download http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=4520", or "Go play Morrowind".

You guys all know that I can't just use that travel mod, because walking around cyrodiil is so boring. I will just play Morrowind if there's no mods, of course, it's just that I'd like the stuff I can't get in Morrowind, but can get in Oblivion, if possible.

I'll make a list, of personal problems. I don't expect them all to be fixed, of course, and I may have forgot some (please don't shout at what I don't like, I'm just looking for mods)

  • Fast Travel
  • Bland and un-unique world
  • Too "everyone is good or evil, with no shades of grey"
  • Cliché creatures, quests, towns, etc
  • The world isn't filled out enough
  • Ruins make no sense - there aren't even beds
  • Voices - obviously I understand this isn't likely, but I might aswell ask
  • Skills aren't important enough in fighting
  • Running is too fast if I have low speed/athletics and am almost encumbered
  • The world is too... happy. I want corruption, greed, and general nastiness
  • Faces - another one I doubt, but if anyone has went around and changed every face to suit the races more, I'd be happy. (e.g. Dunmer look more angry, and less blue)
  • The beast races aren't as good as Morrowind's
  • Everything is too light. I'd like something similar to http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=mods.detail&id=608 to make everything darker, in the game settings, so I need a torch
  • Random items, such as plates, spoons etc are too unvaluable
  • Levelled enemies
  • Respawning containers
  • Everyone has Daedric eventually
  • Essential character's can't die - I'd like morrowind's way of handling essentials
  • Mannimarco - I'd like something other than http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=14200, that shows Mannimarco more like http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f177/RheddnAllie/Oblivion/RealMannimarco.jpg. I'll settle for the first if I have to.
  • Regions are all the same - I can't tell the difference between the swamps and forests. I'd like everything to be more defined.
  • The main quest - I'd like it if I could get a re-creation of the main quests that makes me more than an errand boy.
  • Guilds - I'd like, if possible, for the guilds to give me small quests in the begining, such as the famous "get me mushrooms", and if there where level requirements, so my warrior doesn't become arch-mage.
  • During the quest for Peryite, I'd like for his realm to be his own, not Mehrune Dagon's. (not complaining - I wouldn't expect Bethesda to create a whole other realm for one quest)
  • If daedric shrines where surrounded by ruins and bad guys ala Morrowind, I'd like that
  • Weather is kind of pathetic. I know there'd be no Morrowind weather but it's too calm too often.
  • Textures. I think the textures also show a "happy" kind of feel to the game.
  • The Imperial City. I think it's far too much of a nice place. Any huge city is bound to have areas full of thieves, muggers, mist, and dimly lit areas. Are there any mods that give a bad feeling to the place?
  • The Imperial City (again) I'd like it if The Imperial City wasn't the main city. I kinda liked how Morrowind was centered around the smaller town of Balmora, and not the huge city of Vivec
  • Settlements. I never go to settlements, or stay there long, because they're so unimportant. Are there any mods that fix them?
  • Cities. Considering what Cyrodiil is, I would think there would be more than the number of cities around, or they'd be a lot bigger. Are there any mods that would do this?
  • Religion. I'd like for there to be tons of other religions, from every province, considering the equality of Cyrodiil. I'd like the Nordic elemental religion, the Tribunal if it's still intact, and any other religions I don't know of.
(I understand the Nords don't actually worship the elements - it's more of a respect kinda thing)

I'm sure there's more, and I have found mods to fix certain issues I have myself, and I'll keep looking also.
I know there's people here who can tell me anything else I might want. Even if you don't have a mod, feel free to tell of anything else I may want. I'd only think of it later and get annoyed.
If possible, I'll download a total conversion of the game, but I'd like for it to be lore correct, and I'd rather stick to oblivion, other than the alterations I want, if possible. (No Middle Earth mods etc)

I forsee bad jokes about me wanting to play Morrowind. <_<

Thanks for any input. ^_^

You might find a few things http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1090723-list-morrowind-and-older-tes-games-nostalgia-mods/. As for leveling and scaling, you might want to take a look at http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=15256.

And that picture you linked to is hilarious! :D

There are OB mods for almost everything you're requesting.
Do some research, and ask the people on the OB forum. ;)

I'm confused. If walking around Cyrodiil is boring wouldn't you want to use a mod that allowed you to skip all the walking?

Enhanced Weather can give you darker nights.
All Natural(which comes with Enhanced Weather, Real lights, Atmospheric weather) can give you "Real lights" i.e. all lights are "lights" and not just invisible light bulbs. The tradeoff with this is a performance hit BUT areas are darker and feel more "back in the days".

# Skills aren't important enough in fighting
# Running is too fast if I have low speed/athletics and am almost encumbered
# The world is too... happy. I want corruption, greed, and general nastiness

1. Not sure about that.
2. A high speed rating will eliminate the need to fast travel, you can count on that. You only need 90 or better. And Oblivion even without high settings, is beautiful. a lot of areas is worth just traversing through for the scenery.
3. Unfortunately, in Cyrodiil, there is no slavery, warring guilds and such. OOO brings back slavery(and the option to save them).

Cities. Considering what Cyrodiil is, I would think there would be more than the number of cities around, or they'd be a lot bigger. Are there any mods that would do this?

Either Better Cities, or Open Cities. For the more "Morrowind-like" atmosphere, you want Open cities.

The world isn't filled out enough

Frans' Leveled Creatures Items Mod or Martigens Monster Mod(with spawn rates increased) will take care of that.

Everyone has Daedric eventually

OOO takes care of this. IIRC it also puts and end to Deadric being the "highest quality armor you can obtain" by adding unique sets.

What about fast travel? Do you want it disabled? Why would ruins have beds? Some do... You left voices in a vague request as well...

3. Unfortunately, in Cyrodiil, there is no slavery, warring guilds and such. OOO brings back slavery(and the option to save them).

I know that, but I would think Cyrodiil, being full of diplomats and being the center of such a vast empire would have corrupt greedy businessmen, big traders getting mass wealth at the expense of others, and more people in poverty due to the ricer people.

I'm confused. If walking around Cyrodiil is boring wouldn't you want to use a mod that allowed you to skip all the walking?

Walking around Cyrodiil is boring. Exploring a diverse, unique filled out world is fun.

What about fast travel? Do you want it disabled? Why would ruins have beds? Some do... You left voices in a vague request as well...

I want a good alternative to fast travel. "Cyrodiil Transportation Network" was the closest I found, bu tis apprently bugged to hell. There's "Cyrodiil transport Service" but it just wasn't to my taste.
Ruins would have beds because they're the ruins of old civilisations. I don't expect them to be fully furnished, or to be livable, I just want them to make sense (think of Dwemer ruins - I couldn't use the beds, but they addde so much realism)
I want a replacment for the terrible voices in the game. As I said, I doubt it's there, but I despise how my favourite race, the Dunmer, sound like happy rainbow elves. Among other problems.

anyways, thanks for all the answers. I didn't acutally expect mny intelligent ones :P

I'm searching around right now, and I'll update what I need once I'm done with this bulk of mods. (I have about 100 mods to install - the conflicts are going to hurt)

On another note: Would I get eaten for asking around about using my Morrowind meshes in Oblivion? I mean, if it's for private use, It'd be fine, right?

On yet another note: I apologize for the typos. I seem to have developed dyslexia <_<

For private use is fine.

On the other hand if these meshes were made from scratch you can publicly release them.

I have updated my post too again. I did not realize that that travel mods was bugged. I meant to link Arthmoor's Travel Services mod anyway.

Edit: The voices are a no go, and I already linked the UL mods in my first post. That's the best landscape overhaul for the Cyrodiil regions.

http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=9829 may be suitable for making the Dunmer sound closer to their Morrowind cousins. At least they'll sound different than Altmer.

Settlements: I think http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=27125 is just what you need.
There are also many mods that add more villages and towns, but this is the only mod I know of that actually makes the vanilla settlements larger and more interesting. (Arthmoor's mods have already been linked to.)
Imperial City: There isn't much to make the IC a darker and more dangerous place, unfortunately. But there's http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=22197, and http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=13692.

As for leveling and scaling, you might want to take a look at http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=15256.

+1 In a way, one could argue that OOO is Oblivion with Morrowind features. It is much more and else of course, but Sotobrastos loved much about Morrowind and brought it to his vision of Cyrodiil: the "unleveled" world where you might be killed in seconds by a high level char from Level 1, the satisfaction of exploring due to unique, handplaced items etc. The one thing he disliked about Morrowind was that you tend to get godlike already at Level 15 - OOO tries to prolong this process to much higher levels. Anyway, if you like Morrowind I'm almost sure you'd like OOO.

I guess you're trying to make some kind of lame joke here, but frankly I find this just a little insulting. If you have this low an opinion of the average intelligence of the people who post in these forums I wonder why you bother to ask our opinion at all.

But well, regardless, I'm glad that those of us who measure up to your stringent and prohibitive intelligence requirements have been able to help.

hmmm....so modders who make mods for the updated game with better graphics, a little bit more realism (not much), and an attempt to appeal to a slightly different crowd makes us unintelligent?

If you want to play Oblivion like Morrowind, why not just play Morrowind? I mean, jesus, you had a list of like everything wrong with Oblivion which included every colour of the rainbow and then some.
I have many responses to your never ending list of complaints, however, I am not going to be as so immature to just sit here and tell you you're wrong, because it is just an opinion you are entitled to, but don't refer to use as "unintelligent" just because our opinion is different from yours.

Ntom, read the third paragraph of the first post. Please refrain from anymore of these responses. I think Pseron Wyrd has already expressed the feelings some of us have about that statement. There is no need for reiteration or provocation.

Hmm? Sorry if I offended anyone...

If you want to play Oblivion like Morrowind, why not just play Morrowind?

Because I can have better modability, better control over animations, the ability to ride horses well, a better sneak system, etc. I did say I doubt I'llget fixes for everything. This is me being as critical as possible. I don't expect everything there, but what's the problem with asking?

Anyways, I'll get to checking all the linked files (thanks for that) in a bit... Just checking compatability with everything I got myself...

You certainly are not going to find fixes for everything. Oblivion modifications have their limits too. Being critical and misjudging the ability of this community are different, so please rethink your words in the future. There is nothing wrong with asking, however. Comments such as the one above are just foolish. Do not let that deter you. We, here, expect the same respect in return.

To make up for my response, I will contribute a link to this thread.

It wasn't one of your complaints, but no doubt you don't like the lock picking system in Oblivion much. I have seen the relz thread of this on the forums a lot lately, figured I would go fish the Nexus page out for you, so, here is http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=31424.

Welcome to OB modding!

IMO, you can't get much more Morrowind-like than http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1089735-relz-integration-the-stranded-light/. It's a quest mod that's heavy on quest content, lore, and story. Highly recommended. You will need both Race Balancing Project (rebalances races to be more unique) and L.A.M.E. (much Less Annoying Magic Experience), but for a Morrowind fan, these may tickle your fancy.

Also, Emma has shared a http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1068423-relz-companion-vilja-release-thread-2/ with us, and while I haven't had a chance to play it yet, I know her work is good.

And, if you'd like to be able to one-hit a golden saint (or get one-hitted by one), you should try a damage overhaul. I use kuertee's http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=23062. There are also other damage tweakers on the Nexus.

Of course there is an incredible amount of excellent modding work in this community. I hope you find everything you're looking for! :)

  • Bland and un-unique world 1
  • Too "everyone is good or evil, with no shades of grey" 2
  • Cliché creatures, quests, towns, etc 3
  • Skills aren't important enough in fighting 4
  • The world is too... happy. I want corruption, greed, and general nastiness 5
  • Faces - another one I doubt, but if anyone has went around and changed every face to suit the races more, I'd be happy. (e.g. Dunmer look more angry, and less blue) 6
  • Guilds - I'd like, if possible, for the guilds to give me small quests in the begining, such as the famous "get me mushrooms", and if there where level requirements, so my warrior doesn't become arch-mage. 7
  • Cities. Considering what Cyrodiil is, I would think there would be more than the number of cities around, or they'd be a lot bigger. Are there any mods that would do this? 8
  • Religion. I'd like for there to be tons of other religions, from every province, considering the equality of Cyrodiil. I'd like the Nordic elemental religion, the Tribunal if it's still intact, and any other religions I don't know of. 9

I'm largely a quest, immersion, and unique gameplay type mod user, I cut out all the ones I can't help with, anyway:

Integration covers 1, 2, 3, 4(not really, but it does make your skills and stats more useful through checks in its quests), 5, 8, and possibly 9
Windfall, http://www.tesnexus.com/modules/members/index.php?id=125368, and Blood & mud cover 1, 2, 3, 5 (8 too for Windfall, and B&M)

http://www.dreamingthepyramid.net/TNR-home.html should cover 6, there's also http://theelderscrolls.info/?go=dlfile&fileid=215(don't forget the http://theelderscrolls.info/?go=dlfile&fileid=293 too) which includes a optional TNR face structure plugin with the addition of new hairs and eyes.

7 is covered by the already mentioned Choices and Consequences.

For #9 specifically there's Vows and Covenants which allows you to takes vows and covenants for Deadra/Aedra. Also there's a WIP mod that's diversifying the churches... I'm not aware of anything though that brings old, or foreign religions back.

I only put links for the ones that might be hard to find.

One of the first places I found helpful was http://amito.freehostia.com/Oblivion/OB.htm. You might also find that you have some amount of perspective in common. Seems likely, actually.

I'll second TIE, possibly with the addition of OOO in one way or another. At the above site, OOO was chosen - one of the two would work, to cover some of the basics.

Check out the "realism", "roleplaying", "lore-friendly", "stealth" and suchlike threads and individual posts that crop up quite regaularly. It would appear that... you are not alone! :D
