Oblivion Game Of The Year With Steam - Any Downsides?

Post » Mon May 02, 2011 9:37 pm

Going to play Oblivion again, and I see now that there is a Game Of The Year Edition available on Steam. It appears to have all of the official content. It would certainly be nice to click on a link and have the whole game setup on my computer without the hassle of disks and patches.

My question is regarding the use of mods. Obviously Steam is going to put this in the directory it likes, but other than that are there any complications with MODS? I assume everything goes in the same place just with Steam's set of folders. Is that correct?

Thanks for any help offered.

Hey,

I have Oblivion GOTY on steam and I haven't had any problems so far. It is correct that it will install to its own steam folder (Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\oblivion). I think there was a problem with OBSE a while back, but OBSE is now steam compatible. Nothing else springs to mind.

As far as mods, I'm pretty sure OBSE works with it. However, say you wanted to have multiple installs for whatever reason (say simultaneous installs of Oblivion and Nehrim, like me) I'm not sure you could do that. If not, though, Steam should be fine.

You should be able to have multiple installs. But that is a good point. I've got it on Steam, so I'll try installing Nehrim.

I didn't know that. Can you just tell Steam to install it again in another directory? If you can, I'll probably re-buy Oblivion on Steam eventually.

Nice for you to write a well thought out post summing up the pros and cons of steam. I'm sure the OP appreciates it.

Anywho, Nehrim doesn't actually install the game again, it just copies all of the necessary files. I think as long as you have it in the Steam\apps\common folder, or whatever it is, then it should work. I'll check it out when I get time though :D

Thanks for all the help.

As far as Steam itself goes, I absolutely LOVE it. I have never owned more games or paid less money for them. As a long time gamer I can tell you that not having to accout for all those disks and boxes and crap is great. I have never encountered any issues with Steam that were not directly the fault of the original publisher (updates being late and so on).

Going to snag it tonight, Back to Oblivion I Go!
