Oblivion getting 5 FPS! on good rig :p

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 5:30 am

No matter what settings I keep getting around 5 fps at all times in Oblivion.

nvidia 650i mobo
Core 2 duo e6750 @3.2ghz
2gb ddr2 800mhz ram
evga gtx470
creative soundblaster

Do you know what could cause this? I'd really like to play. I used to play on this same rig with a different card, and the game worked flawlessly! but this was some time ago :[

EDIT: even at 640x480 res, there is no gain in FPS. Is this some sort of conflict? should i go ahead and reformat my OS so I can stop pulling my hair out over it? or would that not even help?

You'll need to regenerate the Oblivion.ini found in Documents\My Games\Oblivion.

As Níeh?ggr said, regenerate the .ini file. The .ini file is in your My Documents\My Games\Oblivion folder....it is the configuration file named Oblivion. Just delete it and refire up the game...a new one will be made. If you tweaked it and wasnt a reference to look at your changes, then just rename the file.

I have already done so :[ but the game persists to be like that. Do you know what else could cause a freshly-installed oblivion to behave like this?

Firstly, are you sure it's a stable overclock? Have you stress-tested your PC hardware, for example with IBT and Furmark (or whatever you prefer)?

Moving on...

You might want to check for dust or other gunk in/on/around components, such as the motherboard, graphics card and CPU, all fans included - also, ensure all fans are working properly. Does the power supply have enough juice in it to supply an OCd processor and a 470, and is it keeping fairly quiet and cool during full load? Is there enough airflow in your case, during operation? Also, maybe use some apps for detecting the temperatures of hard drive(s), graphics card, CPU, etc. Error-checking your RAM - and possibly even hard drive(s) - is advisable, too.

On another level, are you fairly confident that your PC is not infected with any malware? Such things can really slow a machine down.

Of course, another obvious question is: What are your FPS like in other games? And, how is the performance of the machine in general?

Temps of all the components are in check with Everest monitoring software, I have an antec 900 case with every fan slot full, and there is no dust buildup :[

Returning to stock clocks had no impact on the laggyness. I thought it might be malware too, but in that case, idk why it would affect only oblivion down to 5fps. My other games run well, CoDMW2, Singularity, Crysis, RE5.
it almost seems as if its not malware, but some sort of crazy incompatibility or something, i really dont know :[ When i alt-TAB out of the game it seems like my system is running fine, but as soon as I go back into it, laggy terrible hell then it will freeze after a bit.

Do you think reformatting may help? if you dont, i dont want to try it, because right now its really a hassel to reformat this machine or else I would have already tried it.

Wow, I'm kinda running out of ideas here. :( I find it difficult to anolyse computers at such distance, even though I do quite a bit of it in "realspace".

Have you tried installing something like K-Lite Codec Pack and using its "fix broken codecs" (or whatever it's called...) function? You can safely and easily uninstall such things afterwards, regardless of whether they do fix anything. Another vague possibility: are you using some kind of codec pack that doesn't have Oblivion on its "ignore list", so to speak? For example, K-Lite doesn't utilise ffdshow when certain apps are running, like Oblivion, because it tends to mess with them.

Does DirectX (along with every other Windows aspect) have the latest updates? Same goes for drivers for, say, your sound card, and the like. Hm, also - is your onboard audio disabled, in the bios? Probably should be, if not.

Any weird/wacky software installed of any kind, that could be impacting in, um, some kind of way...? But... yeah, shouldn't just be killing Oblivion, even then.

Um. No, I'm actually at a bit of a loss here. The main thing that puzzles me is that all your other games and OS functions run fine, there don't appear to be hardware issues, and you used to run it with no problems, prior to, what... the new graphics card? Really highlights the card (obviously) and/or its drivers (just as obviously) - but then, sounds like you'd have the latest and best of those too. And the card works 100% otherwise. Ack.

No doubt you've tried a clean uninstall and fresh install of Oblivion...

Have you got the Nvidia black screen fix(es) installed (and/or activated in Wrye Bash) ? Not that it's probably *anything* to do with it, but if you haven't, may as well, just in case you can get the FPS higher... :(

One other thing to check is the AA mode you are using -- OB has a very hard time with SuperSampling AA so make sure you are not using it.

i uninstalled k-lite and now oblivion shows me at 12fps rock steady, which is fairly weird in it self, and ive uninstalled Comodo, my AV software, but that seems to have had no effect. I think I'm going to try a system reformat in order to be completely certain and keep me from madness, it just svcks because reformatting is time-consuming to start with, and to make it worse, my gtx470 covers 2 of my 4 sata ports, so I have to play musical chairs between 2 hard drives and a SATA CD drive which i'll need for the formatting. uggggh.

It'll probably be a couple days before I have time to reformat, so if any other suggestions come to mind, let me know.

Thanks for the help thus far.

Buy some right angle sata cables...

BTW: Do you have a steam/D2D version of Oblivion, or are you running Oblivion from a virtual drive?

its the regular game version :[

and i have a right angle sata cable, but its the opposite of what you'd call 'low profile'. i guess i'll pick up another.

You do realize than running the game on a virtual DVD/CD drive (thats what it appears you are doing) is not only buggy. it will also cause a CPU hit.

This isn't a supported workaround, as it is bypassing the security protection.

As you're ready for a reformat, I suggest you at least go through this http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1081188-guide-how-to-smooth-pc-oblivion-fps/ and see if there's anything useful. I did downgrade my Nvidia drivers to the 186 or 187 release and got better performance, but I was running XP at the time. I'm now in the process of upgrading to Win 7, so I will probably use the latest drivers. Considering the work Nvidia has done with the 400 series, I'd imagine you'd get better results from the latest drivers versus the older ones, but it might be something to consider if you're really desperate. I've got the 8800 ultras, so the older drivers were better for me, but I'd only do that as an absolute last resort with the 470.

Well, as an update, turning off sound via the ini file resolved the problem entirely. but i can't play without sound :/
i'm installing new sound drivers to see if that changes anything.

If that's the case you should buy a new (modern) dedicated sound card. Something along the line of a Creative X-fi Xtreme Gamer.

Might be a codec issue. I've had the same thing in the past; <10FPS when music was on.

There's a codec reset utility you might want to try.

creative soundblaster

there is your problem. It's awful. It causes smallpox on your generations.

but really it causes it all. I got rid of mine and all of sudden I can run 100 mods without it.

Just throw it out. I can ALMOST guarantee it's your problem.

I said it before I'll say it again, that soundcard is crap and it causes mega problems.

I don't post here a whole lot, but I know a sound issue.

Had an Audgigy2 ZS prior to my X-Fi cards I now have and I've never had problems with it and this game....not really sure what you're talking about.

see, i dont doubt the audigy 2 ZS svcks, and probably doesn't have support for newer stuff, but like Tig Ol Bitties said, i've used this card before and it ran the game flawlessly so I'm really at a loss here. I dont wanna go buy a new one just to have it not work either.
