Oblivion is grumpy with me...

Post » Sat Jul 23, 2011 12:53 am

I used TCOM and installed everything by the Documentation, but Oblivion is being petulant and uncooperative, it continues to crash for no apparent reason. Saving in outdoor spaces seems to throw it into orbit especially all the other issues it has are hit or miss it seems though I'm having more C++ crashes than is normal.

I can tell you that a TCOM is not supported by people around here. AFAIK it's a unauthorized compilation. Your best chance for a good experience with modded OB is to go through the trouble of learning to install mods yourself... it's not that hard as all it really involves is patience and reading. Start by reading through the first post in the FCOM thread- as it seems you want to play FCOM, or if you're totally uninitiated read some of the sticky posts at the top.

I know how to install mods for myself, I used TCOM because it was more of a one stop shop, rather than trying to find everything from the FCOM site piecemeal, considering the Documentation there is somewhat antiquated.

The problem in TCOM in my experience is the fact that it isn't 100% up to date. I downloaded TCOM and another similar FCOM installation recently and had nothing but issues. Followed a details, updated guide, and everything is great :D

Try the current FCOM thread, on this forum, before even considering any other website's offerings. Then, too, if you have any issues pertaining to an attempted FCOM installation, you will find members of the FCOM team and/or other posters here quite willing to assist you.

Better yet, familiarise yourself with Wrye Bash - see here -> http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=35230 - and start with a working, stable OOO installation. Then maybe extend that to a flawless OOO+MMM installation. Once you have that under your belt, so to speak, uninstall most or all of that - assuming you do not end up content with OOO+MMM, that is - and plunge into FCOM itself.

Always keep in mind though, that you should install one mod (or at most, very few mods) at a time, then test to see that your setup is working; rinse and repeat as many times as is required. This, along with opting for BAIN as your installation method of choice, and reading (and heeding) documentation as you proceed, is the way to maintain sanity while indulging in a heavily modded Oblivion game.

Yeah, as a non-modder I have to say that the thing that work for me is taking a couple of weeks and trying different things until I get what I want. I would even suggest skipping the major game changers until you've played through with the standard game. People always suggested that and I never listened, but you simply cannot decide what you want different if you don't know what it was like in the first place. My conclusion? None of the big three - FCOM, OOO, or MMM, make the game better. They make the game different. You can get the extra critters and NPC's from mods that leave the core of the game intact, and play in a more busy lively world, with the Vaniila Game. That's what I'm doing now and I'm really enjoying it, and FINALLY I am playing the game instead of modding it. Two cents, all for you.
