Get a better system.

I'm sorry, that's all I can say. Your GPU is nonexistent (Intel chipsets are beyond horrible for gaming) and your CPU highly dated. This game places heavy burdens on both. Your system is simply collapsing under the effort of running this game.

Actually Thomas is only partially correct (and is not very polite in the way he presents an answer unfortunately !!)--- the Intel Chipsets are normally a sign of not being able to work with Oblivion due to their lack of Hardware transform and lighting support -- But the G45 chipset is one of a few exceptions (up until recently Intel refused to add hardware transform and lighting instead using a software solution but modern games require support and check for it at launch and error out if it is not found.)

That said your problem is that you are using an old version of the drivers that may not have the support -since it is a fairly new addition and your DXDiag shows -- Driver Date/Size: 9/1/2009 19:54:16, 5617664 bytes. Try downloading the newest drivers for that chipset directly from Intel ( http://www.intel.com/p/en_US/support/highlights/graphics/g45 ) and install them and it might get things working (since the test will then pass) -- I'm not sure how well the game will run but it should at least run and not error out if you have the newest driver.

The thing that JD isn't saying is that Intel doesn't give a Rat's behind whether or not you can play a game on their Chipset video. They are simply blind to that usage, and in fact wasted two years when they first released their 3100X video before they would offer a driver that actually activated the on-chip T&L.

Their negative attitude is why people malign them constantly in this regard, myself included. Even when you are finally able to locate the actual, usable driver, the results aren't going to be worth the effort. There are few shader units, and those that are available are frequently very problematic.

For those people who constantly want to both "have" cake, but still eat it, there is no existing answer. Cheap means bad gaming.

By now, AMD had planned for you to be able to buy Fusion APUs in laptops that would be better than anything Intel offered, cooler running, more power efficient, and far better graphically. But neither Global nor TMSD has been able to scale down the next notch from the past 40 nm fabs, so that AMD's plans for Fusion, and even for their HD 6n00 GPUs, had to be altered to suit the older dies. Only the small form factor APUs are available, for new NetBook and NetTop PCs, but those are really exciting additions to that market.

Intel's Sandy Bridge is an advancement over anything either company offered on the compute side, but the fact is that we have been well above the maximum that any game required for a CPU for a couple of years now, because the console makers have chosen to sit tight on old designs instead of upping the ante in the performance area. Sandy Bridge doesn't bring that much to the graphics side by comparison, although for the very first time, it has the same raw speed (for the better of two graphics levels) as AMD's HD 4200.

Excuse the lack of tact, I was kinda tired when I made that post.

I'm still not entirely convinced that the chipset is capable of running the game, but if that is indeed the case, JDFan, then I stand corrected. Intel chipsets are simply bottom of the barrel when it comes to graphics tech, so to many, many people here, trying to run Oblivion on one (even one that should supposedly support the game) is an exercise in futility. I'm simply saying save yourself the frustration and get rid of the chipset.

I'm not that familiar with DirectX 11, but I do know that Oblivion will not run on it. Try installing the latest version of DirectX 9.0c.

The reason I said that a system upgrade is in order is because you would need a CPU upgrade as well to get optimal performance out of this game, because the Pentium technology is extremely old (and now discontinued completely). However, a new CPU isn't worth a thing unless you purchase a compatible MoBo that the processor will fit in, which also means you'd need to check RAM compatibility and likely buy new RAM. Then you'd need a dedicated GPU (at least an 8 series GeForce if you're going nVidia, but try for the GTX), maybe a sound card (but that depends), and finally a decent power supply to actually run it all.

If the DirectX attempt doesn't work, I'm afraid I can't see any other option.

What you'd need is a new video card really. The Pentium Dual-Core E5500 is still adequate for this game....it's not the best, but better than all Pentium 4 chips.

How much can you spend for a video card?

No problem - and I hadn't had my morning coffee yet when I posted as well :hugs: -- here is the list of Intel chipsets that have the T&L support now with newer driver versions :

The following Intel? processor graphics and integrated graphics support hardware Transform and Lighting (T&L):

* 2nd Generation Intel? Core? Processors with Intel? HD Graphics 3000/2000
* Intel? HD Graphics
* The integrated graphics controller of the Intel? G35, G41, G43, G45, G965, GL40, GL960, GM45, GM965, and GS45 Express Chipsets

Older Intel? integrated graphics products do not have hardware support for T&L. In most games, transform and lighting calculations can be performed on the processor with acceptable performance. A small number of games that specifically check for hardware T&L support may fail to run.

So the G45 should at least not error out like he mentioned -- Again I'm not sure what type of performance it would get but it should at least run.

What you'd need is a new video card really. The Pentium Dual-Core E5500 is still adequate for this game....it's not the best, but better than all Pentium 4 chips.

How much can you spend for a video card?

I dont want to give you all my life story BUT.
None, my family is broke for the following months cuz my dad is getting classes at gateway so he can get a promotion.
Thanks anyways, I'll just have to wait til next year to play Fallout 3 and Oblivion.
I wish I would have bought a graphics card with my christmas money now >_<
