Oblivion Haterz

Post » Wed Dec 22, 2010 2:39 pm

Okay, first of all, not a flame thread. Not flaming Oblivion, not flaming people who hate Oblivion.

Let me clarify. I am an "Oblivion Hater."
I don't hate Oblivion though, I just hate on it.
I complain and complain, and wish it was more like Morrowind, all while playing it. I guess you could call me a player-hater.

However, after reading the GI article, I think Skyrim will definitely be better than Oblivion was. Will it be as good as Morrowind/Daggerfall, or a good enough game on it's own that I don't mind the differences? Can't tell yet.

Some things I liked in the article: Dual wielding, differing enemy/creature behavior, design decisions - Todd said he was a fan of Conan (I assume the barbarian, not comedian) and was trying to bring elements of that into the game, the original Conan stories circa 1930's being my favorite fantasy work, with a "low fantasy" world, other things, I noticed a black smith sign that was a piece of metal in the shape of a horseshoe, I thought Oblivion's store signs looked like they were printed at Kinko's and they all had names like "Swords 'R Us" instead of just "Ivan's Forge," "Jorg - Smith."

So basically I want to hear from the people who didn't like Oblivion, at least not as much as any other Elder Scrolls, whether you think it will be an improvement, a failure, the best ES to date, or what. If Oblivion was your favorite game so far, I don't think there has been anything said that would make you dislike Skyrim in comparison.

Obviously it will be better. I think too many people think Bethesda are stupid. They are not.

Only thing I'm very disappointed about so far in Skyrim is fast travel.

Is this thread really necessary?

Was going to ask this too... it's kind of an unnecessary thread.

Stop spewing nonsense.

Not going to answer such a loaded poll.

You need the "hope Skyrim would be better" option. I don't have nay reliable information yet that would make me "think" anything, but I certainly hope that Bethesda learned a thing or two :)

Yes, it will definitely be better than Oblivion. Better than Morrowind/Daggerfall? Possibly.

Necessary enough for you to not only click and read but reply Little Alex. :D

Back to the OP, I thought Oblivion was pretty bad on many levels but hope Skyrim will be better.

I think so. I know a lot of people, myself included, disliked many aspects about Oblivion. But, from what I've seen, Skyrim looks to be moving back towards complexity within the game (such as the ability to cook, which we've NEVER had before, despite people's desire to do so) while maintain the ease-of-play that Oblivion did so well.

Why are you bundling Daggerfall and Morrowind together? Oblivion had more in common with both of them than they did with each other.

Still not going to answer it. I've taken it upon myself to attempt to have very little opinion about Skyrim, instead just looking at the individual facts that we know (also a reason I will take every "Radiant story" with a bowl full of salt).

I'm not going to get pulled into the hype machine.

It all looks awesome, my only fear is the scale the gam will be.....if it's not bigger than Oblivion, or at least feel bigger, I'll be mad.

However, I never hated on Oblivion, I like the other games a lot too, Oblivion is just different.

Can you see my Alex DeLarge avatar? It keeps changing back and forth between Alex DeLarge and Frank (Once Upon a Time in The West)...

It's annoying me.

No it's pretty pointless. Anyway, I am not a Oblivion hater and I think Skyrim looks great.

Edit* just to add a bit more to the conversation. So far from the information I've heard I think it will be even better than Morrowind. Which just so happens to be my favorite game of all time.

I'm not sure what to think about it, yet.

There are a lot of features that sound neat like dual-wielding, no HUD, smithing and such.

Buuut, I still have this sense of dread that they might keep some of the things I really, severely disliked from Oblivion. Things like the lockpicking minigame, the speechcraft minigame (Jesus, that was just dumb), the poor implementation of fast travel, etc.

...and if I see anything like that compass again, I might just blow something up.
Seriously, just...no.

So, I'm a weird mix of nervous and excited for Skyrim.

I do understand the point of this thread - but you could have worded it better. ;)

Hate *on* Oblivion, ha ! I like the expression. :P I am a bit the same - *whinewhinewhine* *play 200 hours* rantrantrant*. :D

I don't know. Voted "better". :) What we have glimpsed of the art in particular makes me extremely hopeful. ^_^ It just looks plain good - compare to Oblivion screens, they look silly in comparison. Beyond that, the improvements we've seen from Morrowind to Oblivion (stealth, quests in particular), makes me have good hopes to see the same. Dual wielding, perks and dragonshouts are something I wish to experiment, to say the least.

I guess I have to play the defense attorney for Oblivion :P

I concede, both mini games were lack luster. I don't think it was a poor implementation of fast travel at all. They just shouldn't have went with the "Well, we don't need immersive travel since we have this" But I will if we had both plenty would still complain. But they would say it is pointless. I personally want both to exist in Skyrim.
The compass was necessary because if you recall in Oblivion NPC's did not stand around in one place forever. Though again, I will concede it could have been implemented better and should not have been enabled during quests that require you to find things from ruins, caves, etc. And again, I want both directions to place and a option to toggle the compass on/off.

they have already said that it wont have oblivions level scaling. they got rid of the cast while holding shield and weapon thing which really bugged me. slowed backpedalling. increased archery damage. graphics look better than oblivions so yes.......its going to be better.

I'm nervous about the level scaling, although it sounds like it is radically different. I'm also a little nervous about 18 skills, but, the perk system may still keep every weapon playing differently. That's why I'm so on the fence. They've included stuff I didn't like in Oblivion, but may have tweaked it in a way that plays differently. For instance, they still have fast travel. I understand why they left it in, and as long as they've included other options (like boats, guides) I'd be happy as a clam.

"The compass was necessary because if you recall in Oblivion NPC's did not stand around in one place forever." - Outlander

My big hope is that since game keeps track of so many of your stats (including the names of people killed, caves visited) that maybe the AI will allow for other NPCs to say like "Oh yea, Bob went over to Helga's." And then MAYBE if we wanted it, an arrow would point to Helga's, not magically track Bob.
