Oblivion Human Race (not Imperials) How should you name a fe

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 10:59 pm

I want to make a character using the human race however I want her name to be lore friendly. In the past I have tended to name female character Michelle and male characters Mike as Mike is my name and it seems to be helpful for roleplaying purposes however it comes to mind that michelle might not be the most lore friendy. I also know that imperials who are basically the humans in oblivion have first and last names. I dont know whether my character should have one. I do want to keep the name with an M though at the beginning. Any ideas for how I should do this? Thanks :)

I understand bretons have french names, nords have norse-sounding names (Its not hard to think of one), although I'm not sure about redguard naming.

Well so what name sounds right for a human in oblivion?

You should keep in mind Imperials are based of the Romans, so you might consider looking their names up. Name yours Marcus Antonius. Or Gaius Julius Caesar. :)

And Bretons are French, according to their wiki page. Redguards are probably African.

Jean-Jaque for a Breton. :)

Michelle actually might work for a Breton, as it's French.

Which human race? There's three other non-imperial races.

So you want a lore-friendly name for a lore-unfriendly and non-existant race? Just make him a male and name him Marcus Antonius. He was a nice person. Well, he wasn't, but the name is alright.

Redguards are probably African.

Actually they have Persian, Arabic and Japanese names. Don't ask me why.

Because their culture is a blend of Persian and Arabian cultures with some more from the same area put into the mix.
I don't remember any Redguards with Japanese names though.

What about a real-life earth female?

The Redguards always reminded me of the Swahili Coast.

I know, in fact I know very well. I said not to ask me as I would end up in a long monologue about the reason why. The ancient Yokudans (who were Swahili-esque) in culture apparently had a thing for adopting the culture of those they defeated in battle. The Left-handed elves for example...

Gaiden Shinji.

This of course points to some sort of Akaviri influence on Yokuda...

Since this is kind of getting Geographic in a sense would you guys agree that Tamriel is kind of based on the Old World like it would seem the humans are all western, the dark elves are kind of eastern in architecture, the nords are kind of like the vikings the Bretons and Imperials are kind of Germanic in origin meaning British, French, German. The only flaw that I see there is the fact that the red guards have to be either Middle eastern or African and that is north of Cyrodiil though then again cyrodill is kind of like Italy I would say being that it seems kind of roman and like Ancient Rome incorporates many cultures under one government and then there is also the fact that the different areas in the empire are called Provinces and I do believe the first empire in history to call its areas provinces was Rome. I could be wrong though and I do know that France and Canada also call their areas Provinces to this day and I think even Austrailia does.

I thought that the Imperials emulated the roman spirit, but when Oblivion was released, featuring cities with such stupid names as Skingrad, Kvatch and Bruma, it all suddenly melted into some pseudo-germanic strangeness.

Or to Bethesda using Japan as a cultural anologue for Yokuda before they started leaning to the Middle-Eastern side. In fact, Gaiden Shinji was named in Arena, before Yokuda had even been thought up.

Mods aren't lore.

Most aren't, no. :)

However...if you read all the stuff in Redguard pertaining to Yokuda and Yokudan culture you would notice a clearly Swahili-influenced culture (with some very small Japanese aspects).

The whole transition to Arabic/Persian culture seemed to have happened around Yokuda's sinking. Combine that with the fact that the Yokudans also developed a more elven religion at the time, combine it with the fact that a group of Yokudan elves were also killed off around that time by the Redguards and there seems to be some kind of event that can be extrapolated.

Win. This thread is now officially useless. ^_^ Although the offtopic discussion here is fairly interesting *get's more popcorn*

@ Astion: Yeah, I know that some mods are lore-friendly. Ones that add races generally aren't though.
