Oblivion Installation Help

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 7:16 am

Well this will be a bit of a strange error, and to be perfectly honest I'm not even sure it belongs here, but I had no where else to turn for help on this subject. The problem I am having is that my DVD drive is not even acknowledging the Oblivion disc is in the drive. After putting it in, it acts like theres nothing there and if I try to do anything to the driver through the "My Computer" area, it freezes up that window and then crashes. But if I drop in my new Fallout: New Vegas disc, it reads it fine and allows me to play it fine.

So I have no idea whats going on or where to go for help. I am just hoping someone around here has some knowledge on the subject.

You may have a defect DVD device or a dirty Oblivion http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/561101-unofficial-technical-faq/page__view__findpost__p__8103701 which needs to be cleaned. :)

Just make sure that DVD-disc isn't scratched or has any dust left on the surface before you put it in the DVD reader again.

Its definitely clean. I've had it for a few years now and its always been kept safe in my little disc-holder-thing. Theres no scratches, there was a little puff of some sort of fabric, but I removed it and used an extra sensitive cloth to give it a slight cleaning. I haven't been able to test if the disc works on other machines yet though.

And I have uninstalled, reinstalled and played this game plenty of times before without problem. Only reason I thought to reinstall was because I just figured out how to free up 95GB of space on my HDD due to a botched system restore file.

But just to cover all of my bases, do you have any tips on cleaning a disc safely? I've read water (making sure to dry thoroughly afterwards) and a soft cloth are all thats really necessary to give it a good cleaning. I'll grab some canned air too and give the inside of my comp and drive a quick flush as well.

And thanks for the reply. Was up for like 6 hours after 10PM frying my brain fixing my HDD only to have Oblivion not work for me. Me = Sad.

Also try running the https://support.securom.com/removaltool.html (Securom can sometimes make certain brands of DVD drives stop functioning properly)

Maybe you should try that disc now just to see if it works or buy a cleaning set for music CD-disc.
I've in the past used those cleaning set for CD's with good results so why not.

If you need to free up that kind of diskspace I would recommend to use http://www.auslogics.com/en/software/duplicate-file-finder/download/ to find any file duplicates there is on a hdd. But also use http://www.auslogics.com/en/software/disk-defrag/download/ for maintenance your hdd. :)

The Securom removal tool is frequently used in the Total War community, so I strongly suggest that you follow JDFan's advice.

Alright I'll copy these suggestions down so I don't lose them. But sadly ATM I can't go to https sites. Using an app through my smartphone to connect my computer to the net, but its only a trial right now so no https for me. @_@

Thanks for the help guys! I'll clean it, try it on another computer and when I get this real connection, try that program. If it all fails, you'll see me around again. otherwise I'll move on over to the mod area. <.< >.> <.<

Thanks man! I sent the disk off to a friend for him to see if his new laptop will have any problems reading the disk, which will tell me if thats the problem or not, and I will download this link now and see how the program works out for me.

Alright well I'm back and things are still not working. Sent the disk to my friend and he tried it out on his brand new laptop, worked fine. Eagerly attempted to install itself on his brand new HDD. So I tried the securom removal tool, disabled some false DVD-drives and their related software and even cleaned my entire computer (inside and out) with high powered air. Still not working in any fashion.

Its quite confusing, it has been installed, played, uninstalled and reinstalled on this computer at least 5 times now without any problems. But its suddenly not working, and not only is it not working in my drive, other games do still work in that drive and it seems it doesn't even register the fact that a disk is sitting in my DVD drive. Honestly I'm stumped.

Drive information:
Samsung TS-H552U 16x drive

Any other necessary information will be gladly provided.
