Oblivion w/ LAA

Interesting. I generally have little trust of outside utilities like that. I can't really see what it would be doing though that could be any more lightning fast than fast exit 2.

Typically when I exit with Fast Exit 2. I will see two windows pop up for a split second. One small and one large.
The difference mainly is that I see absolutely nothing when I exit. Just my desktop... immediately!

I agree.... I typically don't trust 3rd party programs either. However, this one has been very good so far.

Is the new version 2.2 Game Booster still cobbled until payment?, it used to be completely free until after v1.6, then the better functions became locked out I think (or advertising related setup .. cant remember lost track since it went that way)

That sort of thing is WHY I don't typically trust 3rd party utilities.

Here are the services Game Booster 2.2 disables...

Application Experience
Desktop Window Manager Session Manager
Diagnostic Policy Service
Diagnostic Service Host
Diagnostic System Host
Distributed Link Tracking Client
Encrypting File System (EFS)
Human Interface Device Access
IP Helper
Offline Files
Program Compatibility Assistant Service
Windows Font Cache Service
Windows Search
WinHTTP Web Proxy Auto-Discovery Service

My guess is disabling Windows Search is a big helper.
You can customize disabling services thru a simple .ini file if needed.
The only additional options the free version doesn't give you are "System Tweaks" Basically a broader range of services that it kills.
Looks like it freed up about 350 - 400mb of RAM. Not bad... Sure I could of done it manually, but the ability to turn it off and on on-the-fly is awesome!

Yep I think I am still better off with 1.6.

list of services shut down ~additional~ to yours ..

Background Intelligent Transfer Service
Computer Browser
Function Discovery Provider Host
Function Discovery Resource Publication
Peer Name Resolution Protocol
Peer Networking Group
Peer Networking Identity Manager
Windows Image Acquisition

There were a couple on your list not in mine, but those are ones I have disabled manually when setting up the OS so they do not auto-start.

Also because 1.6 is not cobbled it shuts down things typically found via msconfig, virus checker, launch managers, extra sound setup management software not required, systray additions, and for those that allow them to install all the background crap things like ITunes installs, update services etc.

Only minor snag with 1.6, it asks on install to also install a browser helper object (forget what it was), but at least it does ask and you just un-check it.

http://wareseeker.com/download/game-booster-1.6.rar/7ed8ab5a5 <-Wrong link now gives 2.2 - See http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1071593-oblivion-w-laa/page__view__findpost__p__17096841 for link for 1.6

May I ask what OS you are using? Maybe the difference in available options have to do with different OS installs?

Win 7 on the laptop, XP on the desktop (the above list on Win 7, but I am pretty sure most of those are familiar from XP too)

Hmm I'm running Win7 64-bit. Don't know if that makes a difference. Newer doesn't always equal better in this case...

Here is the .ini list of services disabled. I think some just are hidden, because the .ini list is much longer...

I would be interested to see your load order. Be honest... what is the longest you've played Oblivion without a CTD not using LAA?

I haven't crashed that wasn't my fault, in years, After reading this thread it is obvious why you are having trouble. You need to slow down and reinstall Oblivion (not your mods) to get rid of your alterations (and get rid of Game Booster) to find the true culprit.

I agree that at times I might jump ahead of myself... Slowing down may be a good suggestion for me. Though, I'm not really experiencing any problems. In fact, some would say I've helped solve a big one. I wouldn't consider your load order "heavily modded". Running high texture packs is one thing, but not enough to stress out all components of your computer system. High res texture packs mostly only impact the amount of video ram used. When we refer players to use the LAA patch, it's mostly geared for players who have enough mods running that would force their game to exceed above the default 32-bit allocated memory ceiling for a program. If you haven't crashed in years, it's simply because you don't have enough mods to push your games memory usage to it's ceiling and beyond. However, I appreciate the response

Here is my current load order... Not nearly as extended as some. But it's enough to require the LAA patch.

Yeah that list isn't really that big at all. I'm the perfect candidate for the LAA patch. I run Vista 64 and have a huge list of stuff enabled. But actually, though, I can't tell if installing the 4gb patch did anything, because I installed it at the same time I first started using OSR. I have far fewer crashes now, which is all that matters I guess, but I maybe should have done some testing to see what fixed it.

~ Newer doesn't always equal better in this case...

Yes they gained the trust of a lot of users (even me usually with the same regard for such things as Arthmoor), then next version was a bit of a blow. I think they figured they had a big enough fan base to capitalize ...

Anyway, link I had bookmarked (given above) has changed to downloading the new version - Ironically if you go to IOBits site edit: Link and directions removed; Malware

I think 1.6 was as good as it ever was going to get (theres only so many services/background processes such a utility can shut down), since then it looks jazzier but has also grown its own background service size.

I remember .bat files on XP and Win 95 which pretty much did the same thing, which also shutdown windows as part of the process, with a wait for game exe to terminate then it continued with the rest of the commands re-launched windows and brought all services back online, a bit dodgy and you had to tailor the script to your own system - Game Booster is now getting too big for its boots I think.

I haven't crashed that wasn't my fault, in years, After reading this thread it is obvious why you are having trouble. You need to slow down and reinstall Oblivion (not your mods) to get rid of your alterations (and get rid of Game Booster) to find the true culprit.

If I had to play with that load order I wouldn't even bother - much less for years.

Even problematic crash prone installs like FCOM are very stable with under 100 mods.

To me the issue is no crashing (the load order would be too boring to necessitate that) ... no the issue to me is the load order that does not present consistent crashing. There is definitely a trade off to be had 200-250 mods and some texture replacers and a crash every couple of hours is a way better deal than 40 mods and no crashes.

I've never used game booster but appreciate the realistic discussion about it (instead of the spastic - try this from a forum user that then never returns).

Anyway, link I had bookmarked (given above) has changed to downloading the new version - Ironically if you go to IOBits site http://www.iobit.com/download.html and scroll right down the bottom of the page, above smart defrag is another version of Game Booster BUT dont click the name link, move your mouse over to the right and hit the free download link instead. Thats 1.6

Thanks for the detailed instructions. I will definitely give it a try.

I guess I just have a lot of disabled stuff in OBMM that makes it look a lot bigger.

It's probably large enough for LAA to be effective. You can try running Oblivion in windowed mode and keep task manger open to watch your memory usage. If you don't have LAA patched to your Oblivion.exe, your Oblivion.exe process will crash at around 1.7gb - 1.8gb of memory usage, guaranteed ;)

AE Unofficial Oblivion Patch.esp [Version 3.3.3]

Do yourself a favor right now, get that back to the top of your load order where it belongs. You've probably succeeded in canceling out about 70% of the changes most of your mods tried to make.

I've tabbed out and seen it around 1.5 maybe, but I suppose I would have never seen it hit 1.7-1.8 since it would have crashed heh. I went from frequent crashes to very rare crashes after patching my exe (and installing OSR, as I mentioned), so yeah anyone with a load order similar in size to mine experiencing crashes should really try this. But also if anyone is like I was and consistently had 1100mb+ of textures trying to load on a 1gb card, consider getting rid of some of the hi-res textures, heh.

Hahaha, that's great, because it had been at the top of my load order up until a couple days ago when I installed the supplementals and thought "wait, what if this being at the top of the load order means sloppy mods are cancelling out its fixes? I better put it near the bottom!" Then after putting it at the bottom I spent an hour trying to fix a script effect sound from a mod repeating ad infinitum. Haha, what a waste. Thanks for the tip though, it's good to know I had it in the right place initially. I know I should probably let BOSS work its magic, but if you look at the load order you can see I have stuff grouped generally based on what type of thing they do, and I've never really run into problems, so I stick with it.

That is not hostility. ????

Just pointing out that with a load order like that then there would be little need for much of any optimizing.

I'm not the one telling people not to optimize or try new things.

I recall it was far327 who really was part of generating a lot of dialogue about memory management alternatives with Oblivion.

You make a good point that it is best to get the most stable game prior to optimizations, but nothing wrong with learned discussions of tools than can improve things further.

Some mods will cancel out the fixes, but they're supposed to. Think of the UOP as an extension of Oblivion.esm. Basically what Oblivion.esm should have been. You don't want the game's master file to override all your mods, do you? :P

The only real problem with this comes when a fix needs to remain active and a mod has canceled it out. Bash had made this less of a problem with tags, but it can't be eliminated entirely. Sometimes a mod really does need to carry the same edited data. In cases like this it would be best to politely ask the author to include the data in their next update.

As far as BOSS, despite being a regular contributor to the list, I don't use it myself. I hand order everything based on what it is. Dungeons go with other dungeons. Villages with other villages. City mods in their own group, etc. It works out great. In cases where the order needs to make an exception, I just move it. But then, BOSS isn't for people like us, is it? :)

That is how I was until the userlist - now I accept BOSS as much as I can alter it.
