Oblivion w/ LAA

Post » Tue May 03, 2011 10:10 am

As far as BOSS, despite being a regular contributor to the list, I don't use it myself. I hand order everything based on what it is. Dungeons go with other dungeons. Villages with other villages. City mods in their own group, etc. It works out great. In cases where the order needs to make an exception, I just move it. But then, BOSS isn't for people like us, is it? :)

Ha, yeah that's pretty much what I do and the only mods that didn't work in that manner you can see at the end of my load order after the bashed patch. You know, I suppose I'd be happy BOSSing it up and leaving it that way if I never had to touch my load order in OBMM again. But it's so much easier adding, disabling and troubleshooting stuff when I know where everything is in the load order.

Umm, wow. Why the hostility? You do realize, of course that it is only my CURRENT load order. I have been modding OB, literally, since it came out. I don't need to justify my comments. Let's just leave at that I know what I am talking about.

Sorry if you felt a bit ganged up on Zanderat. I think at the end of the day, no one wants any mis-information posted on the forums. Especially the modders who work so hard. I get corrected from time to time too. (notably by Psymon on occasion. :P) I don't doubt you know what you are doing when modding Oblivion. Whatever makes your game enjoyable is up to you of course. Please don't take any offense. :foodndrink:

That's a good thread. I'm late as always....

I take away that I should try and apply the LAA patch also on obse_loader.exe. Because up until now I have not done so. And I do get "early" crashes frequently enough to keep me wondering what's at fault with my game. Usually the crashes will occur at around OB RAM useage of 1.25 GB. This is pretty much the limit where Oblivion would start to crash on my old PC setup under WinXP 32bit (present rig see sig please).

And that interestingly enough is independent of the OSR heap replacer I'm using... Although yesterday I managed a session that went up to 1.280 GB before I exited because I wanted to go to bed. :) So it's all a bit in flux right now but basically it could be or should be more stable.

My modlist is about 110 long plus a good number merged, including full FCOM, AN, partial RAEVWD, some textures eyecandy etc. The mod count in WB in the very bottom right corner of the status line is 110/166 (or 111/166).

I don't. No worries.

I made an observation that if you are on a 64 bit OS then LAA was at worst a neutral tweak with little benefit and most likely a good idea. My load was asked for. Yes, it's not 100's of mods right now. But it has been. Psymon calling it boring was outside the discussion and unwarranted.

Back on topic. This was much discussed in the FONV forums and how to get it to work with Steam. Those threads are worth a read, also.

Yeah I supposed me calling that load order boring was the entire point I was making.

All that stuff about the size of the load order - superfluous.

I do, however, want to see the load order with 200+ and no crashes ever.

Some mods will cancel out the fixes, but they're supposed to. Think of the UOP as an extension of Oblivion.esm. Basically what Oblivion.esm should have been. You don't want the game's master file to override all your mods, do you? :P

The only real problem with this comes when a fix needs to remain active and a mod has canceled it out. Bash had made this less of a problem with tags, but it can't be eliminated entirely. Sometimes a mod really does need to carry the same edited data. In cases like this it would be best to politely ask the author to include the data in their next update.

As far as BOSS, despite being a regular contributor to the list, I don't use it myself. I hand order everything based on what it is. Dungeons go with other dungeons. Villages with other villages. That is where BOMM is really usefull. Great for overiding the masterlist.

Definitely safe, yes. Whether or not it makes a difference is inconclusive at this point. I will look into it during the week. Do some similar testing like last year.

Yeah... thanks far327. I patched the obse_loader now too and will do some playing. Let's see if it helps. I will report.

In my case it's definitely more than just a neutral tweak with little benefit. It has meant the difference between 15 minute crash intervals and actually being able to play a decent length session.

I do, however, want to see the load order with 200+ and no crashes ever.

Plan on waiting a good long time before that happens then. It would take a near miracle before achieving something like that.

That may be, but I also don't have M$ Office. Besides, BOSS can do that without external help now. BOSS is a great idea for those who either don't know how or don't want to manage their load order manually.

Again my whole point - large load orders need all the help they can get. Certainly there are load orders that are too large ( I ought to know), the lighter under a 100 ones are not going to be seeing all that much benefit (the kind that stand out and surprise you).

I think 1.6 was as good as it ever was going to get (theres only so many services/background processes such a utility can shut down), since then it looks jazzier but has also grown its own background service size.

I created a thread and reported the issue with Gamebooster v 2 locking up previously free services. Thanks for posting the link to v 1.6 back in that thread, alt3rn1ty. :icecream:

Now the only annoyance is v 1.6 constantly reminds you of a new update available. But I can still live with that annoyance if I get more mileage out of it than the newer version.

You guys are aware that you could just use msconfig and the clean boot procedure, right? That's what I use if I decide I need the extra processing space.

Yes, either via msconfig. Or in Win7 search for "services" in the system control / system admin (sorry I have german Win7 where it's called "Systemsteuerung", don't know the exact term in english Win7). It will bring up a window listing all currently running and non-running services with descriptions even. You can turn on and off there whatever you want there. :) Quite convenient.

By the way, my testing tonight with obse loader and oblivion.exe both LAA enabled was not entirely conclusive. I got one session where it crashed at about 1.45 GB RAM which is a new record for me. But beyond 1.20 GB it already got very shaky and flickery and stuff and one could feel it's going to crash any second. Which it sure did shorty thereafter... Another session crashed at 1.23 GB again... I think I may be due for a complete reinstall once again - or start cutting back until it gets stable again and see where it came from.

Guys just ran a full scan of my laptop before I went out - Result http://www.bild.me/bild.php?file=7689013Untitled.jpg

Apologies for spamming this in a few threads but I think for anyone being notified for individual posts, it was necessary.

Previous full scans have not detected this, I did an update of MSSE definitions before the full scan so obviously its a recent addition (should have listened to my instincts on this - and Arthmoors). Its not a serious threat, but devious enough to remain under the radar long enough to get a suspicious old git like me comfortable with it ... Good grief I thought the days of such underhanded advertising/marketing tricks were behind us. Seems not.

Just goes to prove what I have believed for a long time - If its free (exception being open source software (unless it involves google)) and involves advertising/marketing/third parties ... You can be pretty sure you are installing software designed by the biggest professsional bunch of pirates on the planet, you become the product. New mobile phones are being inundated with such crap under the trendy name of 'Apps'. Geo-locateable too.

A possible alternative to GameBooster is AlacrityPC by Ken Salter. I have used it in the past and it works well. I have not noticed any malware associated with it. Those more knowledgeable than myself may be able to confirm this?

It only installs advertisemants if you allow the install wizard to do so. If you uncheck it nothing get's installed. And if you don't trust google then why do you trust Microsoft as a virus scanner? _0-

I haven't had any issues with GameBooster 2.2, but as reported earlier, I think they've removed quite a few features from the free version. It doesn't stop as many programs and services as I would like it to. I'm running Win 7 64, so I wanted the newer version. Now I noticed that they really dropped the purchase price, so they must have gotten some flak over the reduced functionality. I think I'll check Alacrity out.

I know I'm late coming to the party, but here goes with my experience of applying the 4Gb patch:

I used to play Oblivion many, many moons ago but rapidly ran into the bad crashing and lack of memory problems inherent with a 32-bit XP install and 2 gigs of RAM, and Oblivion and running some nice texture-replacing mods.

I promised myself that one day, when I got an upgraded CPU, GFX and RAM, I would treat myself to a "real" 64-bit OS and try Oblivion with mods once more....
well that day arrived about a month ago, so after installing Win7 Pro 64-bit, killing off vast swathes of totally non-essential stuff, and then thrashing the nuts out of the PC with benchmarks and 24/7 uptimes running BOINC and/or LinX, I eventually had a solid, dependable and completely stable 64-bit platform. (This PC rarely if ever gets switched off as it's also host to some IRC bots that run 24/7 in IRC channels: it's current uptime is now over 6 days and that includes multiple Oblivion sessions each day)

Then I began to install Oblivion (to it's own hard drive!)
As someone who remembers fondly many mods of old, but realised that some of them would now be outdated/superseded, I searched around until I found a nice list of mods I thought would work well for me:

my currently running MOD list:

My current basic PC setup is: 64-bit Win7 Pro, 4 Gb RAM, 3.0 GHz dualcore, OK-ish gfx card (HD5750) - dual monitors both at 1280 x 1024

I run Oblivion at 1280 x 1024 with 4 x AA & 2xAF forced in Ati Cat Control Centre, and HDR on, everything set to ultra high or pretty much as high as possible. (this generally gives me 60fps outdoors, whcih is so much faster than I used to get with the old rig it's like a totally new game now!)

There are 120 mods loaded (see spoiler above)

I run Oblivion with the Windows Resource Monitor running on the right hand screen, and when it gets to between 1.7 and 1.8 gigs it would CTD, reliably, all the time.

Then I patched Oblivion with the 4Gb patch I learned about from this very forum after I signed up :hehe:

result: Oblivion crashed at exactly the same point, when Working Set RAM exceeded 1.8 gigs (although now Commit RAM would exceed this limit which it NEVER did before patching, when the working set size reached 1.8Gb it would crash as before)

Scratching my head somewhat, and remembering that I didnt in fact run Oblivion but ran OBSE_loader.exe first, I then ran the 4Gb patch on OBSE_loader.exe as well.

I have googled & read that patching the OBSE_loader.exe willl make all the difference/no difference/crash my PC/delete my entire existence (depending on whose advice I take lol!) - so I thought "must be worth a try?"

Darn it. still the same crashes at the same point. I THEN added Oblivion Stutter Remover, selecting heap type 5 and increasing heapsize to 1024. from it;s default of 450 (as was suggested in these forums)

result: have Oblivion running with a commit of 2.7Gb and working set size of 2.45Gb, buttery-smooth and without crashes.

I tested this out my exiting from my glorious, high-quality Imperial City waterfront shack (they really DO need to check out their advertising in that office, the man said it was a magnificent residence ffs!), and proceeded to run anticlockwise around the entire coastline of Imperial city checking for nirnroot plants. Along the way I got attached by a couple of slaughterfish, 2 bandits, harvested a fair few nirnroots and watched as the 1.8Gb limit was passed, and still the game carried on running smoothly.

I also noticed that, the longer I played, the more Windows 7 noticed that Oblivion was asking for more RAM, and the more Windows 7 made efforts to minimise it's own RAM usage (1.5Gb at game start, reduced to just over 1Gb by the time I had ran all the way round back to my shack & saved the game)

Of course, every now & then Oblivion will just pause, slow up & then CTD, but hell, this is now quite an old game, modded somewhat and with a vastly increased memory requirement than in 'vanilla' form, and... well it's Oblivion isn't it? enough said. There's many good reasons why it's still such a popular game 5 YEARS after it's release, after all.

We love it despite it's crashes, nonetheless :tes:

my $0.02 worth, as per usuall ymmv, this was just my "take" on the 4Gb patching issies I came across.

Thanks for the detailed review of your experience
Sounds like 4gb LAA patch did it's job, so you just need to narrow down a few small CTD issues.

These are some suggestions I've found that helped me with the last little CTD issues...

- Disable all auto save features in the Oblivion.ini - Just do a find for "save" and you should change all the relative values to "0"
- Use Streamline's auto-save feature as an alternative. (Be sure to disable the other features of Streamline in the streamline.ini if you don't want them)

- "UOP Vampire Aging & Face Fix.esp" This can be removed. Their is an option to build this into your bashed patch.
- "Mart's Monster Mod - More Passive Wildlife.esp" & "Mart's Monster Mod - More Wilderness Life.esp" - I don't use these, but others have claimed they can cause CTDs (noted in BOSS)
- "Storms & Sounds.esp" This is known to be a dirty .esp and should be cleaned.

None of the above are game breakers. You could leave them alone if you are okay with the occasional crash. like you said, it is Oblivion.
But, disabling the autosaves would probably be the most beneficial in getting rid of some persistent crashes.

Hi Joe.

Just for clarification. Are you saying you attribute your success to using the 4GB patch on your OBSE_loader.exe, adding OSR with the settings you use, or both of these separate actions? And thanx for your post. It has prompted the review of my particular options.

I suspect it's running the 4Gb patch on oblivion.exe, and then adding the Oblivion stutter remover with the settings I described.

I _think_ patching OBSE_loader.exe wasn't needed: I will test tomorrow by running the "stock" OBSE_loader unpatched, and see if it breaks over the 1.8 gig barrier without failing.

Joe

[EDIT]

I just fired up Oblivion with the unpatched OBSE_loader.exe, then ran round the outside of Imperial city coastline again - as before, Commit ran way up to 2.4Gb, however Working Set hovered at 1.7Gb before sinking back to 1.4Gb, but when I got back to the docks area with all those adjacent cells, it began to rise again. The moment I exceeded 1.745Gb of Working Set RAM... kerblooie... Oblivion crashed out to desktop again, so I now suspect both Oblivion AND OBSE_loader.exe need to be patched AND the OSR added with heaptype 5 & size 1024 for a "reliable" >1.8Gb RAM usage.

Last night in-game Working Set RAM usage got to 2.55Gb with no slowdowns or problems whatsoever. hope this helps! Joe
