It's mentioned, but you are perhaps right that I should expand on that.

same goes for the vanilla size textures. still reading up on the thread, then ill start dl and installing them.

For vanilla size textures, I must reiterate my previous recommendation of Bomret + Vibrant textures. Such a lovely combination! (I know I sound like a broken record on this)

As to Enhanced Economy: If you do like the barter slider, you can configure EE to still have it. One of the numerous options it offers. By default it's gone, but you can change that if you like. :)

Probably won't help, but if you grab OSR 4.1.2, make a save in a circumstance where you have severe performance issues, enable Master\bExtraProfiling and CriticalSections\bEnableProfiling in the OSR ini, start Oblivion, load your save as soon as you reach the main menu, play for a minute or two w/ performance problems, and send me your OSR log file then... well, I could probably tell you some details about your performance issues.

Unfortunately, those details would probably be rather arcane, and the chances that I could meaningful describe the real world meaning of those details would be slim.

wow so many replies and im quite drunk, so I hope I can answer them all and make sense...

- powerfull pc: i dont know what to tell you, vanilla it seemed quite alright, then again I only walked out of sewers and turned around 2x
with all the mods installed (and I tried to save ressources) and playing a real game, aka running around, killing mobs, popping in a dungeon now and then, doing quests... i feel like its barely playable. sure i still could lower graphic details, but they arent exactly maxed out and i wouldnt want to play in lower res or with less details. i want to play oblivion with beautiful graphics, not crippled...
i dont know if its the cpu or the gpu. and its not constant low, theres just situations. i dont know if its the engine in general or some mod(s) or the combination of the two. it feels like... the cpu is powerfull enough but the gpu ain when certain situations arise. like a dungeon with 20 actors (all humanoid) and torches. whatever it is, i get that a pc that would be twice as fast wont mean double the performance. but for certain, a future pc fully compatible with lets say winxp32 and directx9 would surely help with this situation.
yes, i also felt my current setup should have no trouble with the game. and yes this may even be the case without mods. but my current modlist and game as it is set up just barely is playable (please note, I may be unfair and demand too much^^) and I do not think it has to do anything with the system/hardware/os itself... it may just be that the engine and/or mods are - and i dont say this lightly - not programmed perfectly and/or not tuned perfectly. also do note that i am talking out of my azz here and have no physical proof and deeper understanding, just my 2 cents...

- your advice about the oblivion.ini was not forgotten. however, I am quite cautios when it comes to edit stuff I dont understand. I did follow some "tweak guide" last time and I dont know if it helped, in fact it may have made things worse... also, i am not fond of having fog. if I can have a very distant and immersive fog with VWD and save frames, well that is something we could talk about further, but just pop in streamline and have fog all around me.. that would somehow defeat the purpose of the beautiful distance provided by oblivion, would it not?

- bomret and vibrant textures WILL be installed when I get around to it. you dont need to convince me anymore :)
- enhanced economy, actually yes i like the slider and it did play a factor in my decision. but like I said, yes, Ill get it... no more convincing needed :)

- hey skyranger, your suggestion does indeed sound interresting... gimme some time to set it up and get that log to you. even if you cant explain it well and it wont translate to real world benefits, it might still help somewhat...

His oblivion.ini advice is the same advice in the RAEVWD readme. In my experience it's a pretty good idea when using RAEVWD or similar mods. Though not doing it produced more stutter than FPS reduction on my system.
(note that when I'm *trying* to produce stutter, adjusting that back to vanilla is how I start)

Belthias, I went to re-read the whole thread again 'cuz you're a likeable guy and it's not such a long thread after all. You should definitely take up on SkyRanger's offer and check with him one-on-one. Having said that a couple of questions I could not find an answer:

- What's your operating system? How many bits (32 or 64 version)?
- Cold-booting your PC, how many processes are running once you come to the desktop? (see task manager)
- Basically, you should kill all unneeded processes.

I still have XP 32-bit as my OS, and besides the standard Microsoft Processes I have killed everything but Nvidia video card control center (probably could be killed too) and a tool for my videocard (similar to Riva Tuner but not Riva Tuner). So when I boot up, I have like 20 or 21 processes running. If I killed Nvidia and the tool it would be down another 5 procs or so. I think 16 is about as low as possible under WinXP.

So kill all the background noise like virus scanners, Adobe Reader, Java all the "convenience crap" etc etc. In WinXP you do that with the program "msconfig.exe". I don't know how to do it in Vista or Win7. Of course kill also all open other appications, browsers etc. When I play Oblivion I only run Fraps together with it. All else is shut down (expect Nvidia control center and that videocard tool).

Then referring the one guy who made the tests with various computer settings earlier. Maybe reset your CPU and all to stock speeds, if only for temporary testing. I cannot imagine a sudden improvement in overall performance but who knows, maybe your Oblivion does hate over-clocking.

the cpu is powerfull enough but the gpu ain when certain situations arise like a dungeon with 20 actors (all humanoid) and torches.

If you have a room full of 20 NPC's, even http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HAL_9000 would start to stutter, no kidding! :) So if you are to enter such a fight you must kiss your FPS totally goodbye.

My rig is a WinXP 32-bit PC with:
Intel dual core E8400 running at stock 3 GHz
4 GB RAM (not overclocked)
Nvidia 8800GT (from Gigabyte, factory overclocked)
Seagate Barracuda 250GB single-platter HD (always nicely defragmented, fast...)
Creative X-Fi Extreme Gamer soundcard

Your hardware is more powerful than mine, at least your electronic one :P I'll give a few examples of noteworthy situations I encounter:

One memorable instance of severe slowdown I got when I had to fight inside a fort involving 5 marauder enemies on the one side and me and my 2 CM Partner companions on the other side, so total number of actors was 8 including me. This fight was down to about 10 FPS (or even less, despite OSR and all optimizations I made) and unplayable. Period. Well, it was unwinnable anyway. :) I would *think* that the load contribution from my 2 companions was even more heavy than the 5 enemies.

Then I always receive about a 15 seconds slowdown when I fast travel to the IC Market District. With my modded game there are up to 15 actors, maybe more, running around there. I made a screenie to count them again, can do that tonight only. Anyway, a LOT of NPC's. This slowdown I believe is due to scripts starting to run. It recovers after about 15sec. In the first moments FPS can go as low as 10, then it recovers to 15 to 22 depending of how many NPC's I've got in my view. If you have "Outside shadows" set to 10 in this situation, it's an additional FPS eater. I think there is a reason why vanilla Oblivion caps NPC presence at 10 I believe, usually less, like 6 or so. NPC and their scripts are significantly eating into CPU load.

I should post my load order in order to give a reference, can do that later too.

Also Re-read post #2 by SkyRanger, listing reasons for slowdowns. I can totally confirm that. See for yourself which of it is applicable.

So what can you take from all this? Well, I don't know. :) But - in general - you must be aware that some slowdowns in Oblivion are god-given and inevitable (basically depending on mod load) and ultimately uncureable. I would believe your problem is more with your PC than with the game. As far as I can tell the last modlist you showed is not very exotic compared to others I've seen, and those gamers were not necessarily complaining about their slow game. I believe you have not yet driven out all performance devils from your game, so you should continue searching.

thanks, you guys are all quite likeable and very very helpfull (and/or willing to help)

and your right, yes, I havent told ya...

- OS is Windows XP32 bit (and please, no one give me sh*t for 32bit and 4gb ram, Ive heard it all)
- I also have 64bit Windows7 lying around, have yet to install it... :)

- I cant give you an exact count of processes after a boot (right now at least) However, I dont exactly run unneccasary cr*p in background or any extensive hoggers. Most people install something and if it has autostart processes they dont know, notice or care. I always check autostart services and programs and kick what I dont need/want...
my system right now with browser, download and all processes loaded, even unneccesary ones is between 2% and 4% CPU load

- Kill all (unneccesary) processes... I know, and I do that... Stuff I let run when playing includes logitech mouse support, ICQ (sometimes when my girlfriend is online) and speedfan (monitor temperatures and manage fan speeds), explorer.exe - most other stuff (antivirus etc) is shut down. And I do not have a firewall installed, this is build in my router...

- I tried this special reboot for windows.

Please note that it certainly diddnt hurt performance but since I dont have a way to perform an accurate benchmark I have to say the difference is negleteable, if it exists.

- also my system since I started this thread is not overclocked anymore...

- I have shadows on 1, not 10 :)

However, the longer this thread gets, the more I feel like everything is normal and I asked for too much. You yourself told me many NPCs will kill the FPS and that in a nutshell was my problem. Theres probably still some wiggleroom to optimize the game with ini tweaks (like, I feel the game uses mostly only 1 of my 3 cores)
With your help I will further look into ways to gain a bit more power/fps, but honestly, I cant believe that its on the computer and not game side.

However, the longer this thread gets, the more I feel like everything is normal...

Yeah... well quite possibly so. But do this thing SkyRanger offered, then at least you will know for sure. I'll pour over your codeboxes later a bit, maybe I see something still.

You're welcome!

P.S. If you make CTRL-ALT-DELETE (calls up the Taskmanager) and check the "Processes" tab, at the very bottom or in the status bar of the window, it should display the process count (IIRC). Sorry if you knew that already. :)

i will do the osr log thingy when my game takes me to a troublesome spot, i dont have saves everywhere and it will take some time for me to get to a spot, save, make changes, record the log and so on... im not talking weeks, but it might take a few days (i am not playing 24/7^^)

yes i knew about the taskmanager. and may I note that ctrl-alt-del wont bring it up for me, i disabled enhanced user features so i can lock my station. also, right click on the taskbar brings up a popup menu where you can select the taskmanager. and i have currently 51 processes running. but note, i am chating, working, browsing not playing right now. thats why i said not right now. ill count after a restart. and i can give you a count when i shut stuff down before i play too :)

edit:
i have 22 processes running when i shut down everything to play.
and i made 3 osr logs for skyranger to look at.
1) fort nikel: worst fps so far encountered
2) fort ash: contrast: very well playble, no fps crashes
3) riding around outside (from fort ash toward the ic) - not exactly high fps, but still well playable

1st log is sent to skyranger per pm
2nd and 3rd couldnt send because your inbox is full :)

Yeah, 22 processes is very good.

I dug up that screenie I talked about earlier with the http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d191/haegint/Oblivion/ICMktDistr_01.jpg, took that yesterday. I count 15 including me, but there were still a few more behind me plus probably around the corner to the right hand side. Also note the shadows of the NPC's. Anyway if you get FPS in the mid to high teens in this situation it must be considered good, at least on my rig.

I'm also throwing in my modlist just to put it in a bit of perspective:

Nothing too fancy really. Basically full OOO plus Weather All Natural plus more NPC's, plus cosmetics. Numbers 19, 19 and 1A add quite a few NPC's. Also the whole CM Partner group is quite heavy in scripts especially if you have more than one companion by your side. Runs all well, but I do get a slowdown every once in a while, but definitely bearable because usually short-lived.

  • Oblivion will not use more than the one core no matter what .ini tweaks you implement. It's an engine limitation.
  • NPCs in number will kill your fps, and that is a cpu issue not a gpu issue. As a result, FCOM is a sever fps limiter.
Just wanted to bring some focus to two points which I believe are pretty central to your issues.

thanks... i slowly figured as much (about fcom, cpu and npcs)

about the multi-core, i just assumed/hoped the game would be multicore capable with all the settings in the ini (threads, threaded....) - why have all this thread stuff if the engine can only use one core anyway? dont answer that, its a stupid question and i know it. just is so... disappointing ;)

SkyRanger could write a book about the many flaws he's seeing in the way Oblivion is running the show...

But we must not be ungrateful. It's still a great game. So I'm forgiving it. :D

I'm not positive, but I don't think you need these plugins if you're using Mart's as they're already included:

10 Francesco's Optional Chance of Stronger Bosses.esp
11 Francesco's Optional Chance of Stronger Enemies.esp
12 Francesco's Optional Chance of More Enemies.esp

You can also try out Mart's Reduced Spawns or Reduced, Reduced Spawns to bring your NPC number in line. 20 characters with torches is definitely going to bring your FPS down. Even getting rid of those torches would help. There was one time in Kvatch where the Actor's Have Torches mod decided to give every one of the survivors a torch, and my game became a snail's crawl because of that. Normally I would have had a fairly decent framerate at the time.

It would be great if Bethesda would release a patch that included some of the engine improvements they made to Fallout. That game runs so much better. But I guess that is highly unlikely.

These plugins are indeed part of an FCOM install.

Come to think of it, on my old rig I disabled actors with torches and any plugins that added fish. Those two decisions bought me back some fps.

19 Atmospheric Oblivion.esp - I don't know what this does, but look into whether it could be robbing fps?
1B Living Economy - SI.esp - Ditch LE and get TheNiceOne's Enhanced Economy. Better in every way.
1C Living Economy - Items.esp - Ditto above.
I don't see an MMM reduced option in your list.
68 Dungeon Actors Have Torches 1.6 DT.esp - Ditch for some fps gain.
69 Exterior Actors Have Torches 1.3 DT.esp - Ditto above.

and dont I have some slightlyreducedspawns plugin enabled? thought i had...

Yes you do, but it doesn't sound like it's doing much. You might want to try one that reduces them further. 20 actors in an area is alot, especially if they all have torches.

I can't provide you with any good advices, but I just wanted to let you know that it's not your computer's components that's lacking.

I run an Intel Core i7 Quad-860 2.8 gHz (3.2 with turbo boost)
Radeon HD 4890 1GB GDDR5
4GB DDR3
So our specs are almost the same. I run at 1680x1050, full view distance, all sliders on about 75% (except for grass, which is about 60%).
I have HDR enabled, all shadows (except self shadows, makes faces look weird on my comp/monitor) high water quality and all water details on.

I have not tried QTP, or any other "extreme" graphics mods, but I run larger mods such as OOO, MMM, Better Cities and A LOT of smaller ones without considerable lag. There's a little lag when travelling on horse, but it's only when loading the next line of rocks/tress/grass. Combat (as long as it does span over a large area) does not cause any lags anywhere. There's also half a second slowdown when entering cities (because of better cities). I wouldn't consider that "lag" though, because it is only when walking through the gate/spawning after fast travel, and again, doesn't affect the game in any considerable way.

Again, I know this doesn't help your problem, but with a system almost identical (I can't imagine a huge difference between AMD and Intel when the amount og gHz is about the same) I just wanted to point out that you shouldn't worry about your computer's strength.
So to me it doesn't seem like its the mods you are running that is slowing you down (then again, I haven't tested QTP/RAEVWD/LOD mods). My major mods that affect grtaphics in some ways are OOO, MMM, Better Cities, Unique Landscapes, Natural Environments.
I'm guessing the problem lays in either of the mods I haven't test that you are running, our your load order (guessing, I don't have a lot of knowledge of this subject, so don't take my word for it).

Oblivion will not use more than the one core no matter what .ini tweaks you implement. It's an engine limitation.
Oblivion does not multithread normal gameplay significantly, but it does multithread a number of special cases significantly.

69 Exterior Actors Have Torches 1.3 DT.esp - Ditto above.

atmospheric oblivion makes immersive sounds play now and then. seeing as i have a (quite good) hardware accelerated soundcard I think I am okay with adding more sounds. also, I did too suspect this mod to be a culprit in hogging valuable power, but the before/after enabling test I did when installing the mod seemed to indicate that I can run it fine...

any fishmods are off, as well as habitat stuff. sadly, i would have enjoyed them but i need all the fps i can get

i did exchange le for ee - it just doesnt reflect in the mod list yet (but i did append it right below the list)

well, if the too many actors problem persists in more spots I will think about reducing spawn rates even further. however, i dont want to play a game with nothing to fight in ;)
have torches... these 2 mods (together with darker dungeons) are sadly on the "really really really want them" list. i know they cost performance, but ill just have to live with it

His performance issues appear to be occurring in the culling process.

There was also a call from 40DC2A to 678510 that further lowered his performance in problem areas, but it looks like it was less of a problem than culling. No clue what that function does.

i just disabled

- atmospheric oblivion
- actors have torches
- ingame options: shadows

and am rebuilding the patch. Ill make a new try (and ors log) for comparison. maybe the culprit is a mod that can be isolated...

result: diddnt feel different.

next step:

disabled:

- deadly reflex 5
- stealth overhaul
- darker dungeons
- symphony of violence

result: diddnt feel different

next step:

disabled:

all mods, load save from sewers (tutorial), straight ahead into the ruin and fought 2 bandits - as before (and with all mods) it runs smooth enough.

i have corresponding osr log files. maybe we get smarter with them now...
