Oblivion, Mods and Hardware...

Post » Fri Sep 11, 2009 9:43 pm

Hey,

about a year ago my friend gave oblivion to me. I played it a bit, was annoyed from the enemies that level with you so my friend told me about OOO (and MMM). Played them a bit, even tried some other mods, but the game was not exactly fun with 5fps during fights...

So, few days back I found Oblivion and Shivering Isles being sold very cheap. Picked it up, installed Oblivion again and started getting mods I need and/or want to play.

Mind you, I have a (almost) brand new computer and I was really looking forward to playing Oblivion again, with good mods, good quality and not too low fps...
So I got FCOM, Weather Mod with Darker Nights, Darker Dungeons, VWD Mods, Retexture Mods and a few more... I Installed them all, tweaked them etc which was a few days work but not a big problem. I played through the tutorial prison escape dungeon (60fps) and was happy how nice it looked and went.

Then I left the sewer and although the game looked amazing, the fps were quite disappointing (~10fps). Well, must have been too greedy with retexture mods, so I started deleting/disabling mods starting with the VWD and QTP3 redimized mods...

Now, two days later I am still disabling mods, lowering details, running around, popping in a dungeon now and then with my eye on the fps and its REALLY disappointing. Yes, I could lower the resolution and even lower details, but I am only willing to go so far... Come on this game is almost 4 years old...

Before we go any further, I should probably tell you my hardware config:

Gigabyte Socket 3 Motherboard (AMD Chipset)
AMD Phenom II X3 720BE (Tripple Core, 2.8GHz Stock - running at 3.2GHz (watercooled @ 39?C under full load)
ATI HD4870 with 1GB VRAM
4GB DDR3 RAM
Creative X-Fi Platinum Soundcard
WD 300GB VelociRaptor HDD

(Almost) newest drivers are installed. All other applications/games run as I would expect them too...

I run oblivion at 1680x1050, high textures, 100% viewing distance - everything else is (now) switched off or quite low. Actually, its beyond the point where I would say it looks good enough to be played. No gras, trees gone a few meters in front of me, people invisible when i step a few step backs... But I tried, maybe it would let me have at least 20-30fps when running around outside... It does not for the most part... But that is not the worst of it...
If you enter a dungeon you expect lots of fights. And in fights, you need a somewhat fluid game experience. Even with no gras, trees, no retexture mods, no real lights, just plain FCOM, some additional gameplay mods add darker dungeons I often have to fight with <15fps. My hope that running around outside may svck, but at least being able to do dungeons with a good fps was crushed...

Which raises the question(s):
- how does this compare to other users with a similar setup? Do you guys have similar fps and play with low quality or 10fps? or does my computer for whatever reason not perform in oblivion as it should?
- or is FCOM and or darker dungeons with actors have torches so cpu/gpu intensive that these mods make my game crawl on a not to bad computer?
- will I just put the game back in the shelve and come back in lets say 10 years when hopefully the current computers can kick the crap out of oblivion and I can play highest quality with all "my" mods like FCOM, darker dungeons, real lights, even with QTP3 and other eye candy mods with 60fps flat?

your

I'm on a 3 GHrz Core 2 Duo w/ an NVidia 9600 - ie worse than your computer, but not bad. I run OOO, RAEVWD, and 20 or 30 mods with low to very low performance impact. I tend to run at 1280x1024 or lower, but your faster video card ought to make up for that. I have high rendering quality and far view distances, but no AA or anisotropic filtering.

I drop down to 15 or lower sometimes when loading cells while travelling outdoors, and every once in a while in a really bad location. Most of the time I'm in the 20 to 30 range (I have Oblivion capped at a max of 30 FPS).

You might try posting your mod list. Things that kill performance include:
running out of VRAM - unlikely unless using the non-redimized QTP3 and a video card with less VRAM than yours
too many actors nearby - mostly only in cities
too many actors fighting you - mostly only with very high spawn rates
too many actors traveling around the world in distant places - Tamriel Travelers, Crowded Roads, that kind of thing can contribute to this
too many sound effects playing - unlikely since you are using a discrete sound card
too much LOD - usually this requires RAEVWD plus either not following the RAEVWD recommended oblivion.ini tweaks or installing another mod that duplicates some of RAEVWDs stuff (Better Cities IC IIRC)
Oblivion deciding to multithread something poorly - usually only happens much on cell transitions

Performance mods that may help include:
PyFFI - improves meshes
Oblivion Stutter Remover - made by me - improves multithreading, timing, and some other stuff
Silent Feet - lowers the sound quality of footsteps, or eliminates them altogether

Hey Skyranger,

thanks for your reply...

well, I also thought my system should be able to handle oblivion, maybe even some high res stuff like HGEC (nvde hehe^^) and QTP3 (redimized mind you, not the full package) and even RAEVWD (which makes the game look SO much better and fun exploring). But I was wrong. Now even with disabling these "extras" I still get low fps, especially when I need them (in fights).
I also tend to rule out sound problems with an X-Fi.

And yes, I had RAEVWD and better cities installed. for like 5minutes, then it was gone again because the fps svcked. Without its better, and its not like i have bad fps everywhere, it does happen that I hit 40-60. I do/did have tamriel vwd, which is supposed to have the essential poi visible when distant without (well, almost) any impact on fps...

You mentioned tamriel travelers. yes i use it, i thought, well a few traveling merchants wont hurt too bad. I will test without them.
And yes, of course the fps are lower when i stand in the city with many actors around me or am fighting with many monsters. And I dont mind 15fps in a city.
But I HATE 15fps when 3 bandits are pounding me on the street or worse when I enter a fort and 2 bandits are around the corner and my fps before i even see them go from 50fps down to 9... I cant fight with 9fps. and its no fun, too...

I also installed many performance enhancing mods like the script optimazitation or lowpolygras (void since i disabled gras in the meantime entirely) or lower poly rock meshes and a few more - all aimed at "gaining more fps with negletable visual loss"...

I will try your stutter remover soon. I have no trouble with stutter (that is to say, it doesnt stutter at all), but better multithreading and timing cant hurt either. Silentfeet, well, i may try maybe it helps, but this i doubt.

Check your CPU temperatures while the game is running. Sounds like it might be overheating.

watercooled system. it is NOT overheating! :)

i would/will give you my load order. after posting, i started screwing around again (deleting mods and all) so i can try vanilla and fcom only. if i give you my load order now I will give you a wrong picture. wait till after im done in 2-3 days...

Just also bear in mind that FPS is never, ever constant in Oblivion. It may be 4 years old, but it's still a demanding game, and being badly optimised doesn't help either. Even the most powerful PCs will dip under 20fps sometimes.

However, my first bet would be your resolution, 1680x1050 is a rather beefy resolution. Just try lowering that down to something smaller, and see if that helps your framerate.

Have you tried a clean boot? Google it for your OS, http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310353 is for XP.

The performance you are getting implies that something is wrong, though given the general performance issues with Oblivion it doesn't guarantee that anything is wrong. Try:

1. running Oblivion at a very low resolution. If that does or doesn't fix it, well, it tells you something.

2. posting your load order. Maybe someone will notice something significant.

3. running Oblivion without the CPU overclock. 39 Celcius certainly sounds better than fine, but given the degree of overclock you're running at and the lack of other leads at the moment, it may be worth a shot.

Do you use Unofficial Oblivion Patch ?
For me it made a big difference on the FPS I got :twirl:

I think it`s also very important how you install the game:

Install this way if you do NOT install Shivering Isles:

1. Install Oblivion 1.0
2. Install Official 1.1.511 Patch (only if you want the launcher to be fully functional)
3. Install Official 1.2.416 Patch
4. Install all Official Add-ons (DLCs and Knights)
5. Install the Unofficial Oblivion Patch (user-made mod)
6. Install the Unofficial Official Mod Patch (user-made mod)

Install this way if you include Shivering Isles:

1. Install Oblivion 1.0
2. Install Official 1.1.511 Patch (only if you want the launcher to be fully functional)
3. Install Shivering Isles (which brings Oblivion to 1.2.201)
4. Install Official 1.2.0416 Shivering Isles Patch
5. Install Official Add-ons (DLCs and Knights)
6. Install the Unofficial Oblivion Patch (user-made mod)
7. Install the Unofficial Shivering Isles Patch (user-made mod)
8. Install the Unofficial Official Mod Patch (user-made mod)

To the OP.

- You should post your load order / mod list
- After having sorted out everything to the best possible extent, you should get Oblivion Stutter Remover (from Tesnexus).
The situation you describe of severe slowdowns in some places and very fast FPS in other places is exactly where OSR will come to help.

But resolve the other issues first, OSR should then be something like icing on the cake.

Hardware wise your PC is more than adequate to give you a good Oblivion experience, so my 99.99 probability guess is it's about software with you :). Don't despair, you're not the first....

Hey,

again thanks for the many replies. let me adress each point individually:

- I know that 1680x1050 isnt exactly low res. However, the HD4870 not exactly a weak card, oblivion a 4 yr old dx9 game I just assumed it would be ok. I will try a lower res and report on that. But in the end if I would need to run the game in 1024x768 with low details to play it well that would be my point exactly, I would have to put it back on the shelve for the next 10 years...

- My windows isnt exactly old nor is it badly maintained. But I will try a clean reboot and report on the fps (gain)...

- like i said I will try a very low res and see/report what happens...
- the load order, installed mods and bashed batch details will be posted after i reinstalled everything with minimum mods.
- it is a black edition CPU and the overclock is done by P-State FID (multi) from 12 to 16. So nothing else gets overclocked. Besides, I did try the cpu at stock 2.8GHz because I read that oblivion would not like overclocking. it does neither help nor diminish the games performance noticably.

- thanks for the install order. I think I did everything ok the first time around. since i plan to reinstall everything I will make sure to follow your instructions. But I do not see how the order I install everything in would impact performance... :)

- I dont feel there are any mod or game incompatiblety issues. but i definately will get the oblvion stutter remover...

thanks u guys!

I run it at 1920 x 1200 with an 8800GT, and still get frame rates in the 30's-40's outside. Resolution is not the issue. I would recommend that you uninstall/reinstall the game. You may not have removed all the things that were causing your slowdowns from before. You might want to consider starting from a clean slate again, avoiding the FPS killers next time.

1680x1050 should be fine. But his framerate should (probably) be fine too. Confirming that FPS troubles were not effected by resolution at all would rule out possibilities like, say, accidentally having your graphics drivers set to override Oblivions quality settings to 4x AA.

Sometimes Oblivion drives me nuts w/regards to performance. I have a modest budget system, an OC'd E5300 running at 3.3 ghz (on stock cooling!) and a GTS 250 (that's a 9800 GTX), along with a relatively light load order as well as pyffi'ed meshes and other optimizations. My fps can wobble from 60-10 just walking around outside with all my mods active. On a fresh vanilla install I've hardly ever seen my fps go below 40, but who wants to play vanilla? So I trade performance, particularly around npcs, in combat with more than one enemy, and sound related stutter for mod goodness.

The best thing that ever happened was OSR, because I can cap the fps at 30 and not notice fluctuations so much. It also helped with loading stutters and such, and generally evens out gameplay somewhat. All we can do is hope someone cracks the holy grail of reverse engineering Oblivion's code, and gets some more efficient use of multithreading going on.

Also, you should up that rather conservative-for-watercooling overclock up a bit. It might help out.

No, I have no fancy Catalyst settings enabled, especially not AA or something gpu intense like that... Btw, I am running catalyst 9.9 and if all else fails I might try 9.8 but for now seeing as only Oblivion is lacking extreme performance, lets not start swapping on (old) gpu drivers...

and yes, I could optimize the OC but I really would like to refrain from that for many reasons. Mainly because with stock vcore 3.2GHz run stable (prime95 all 3 cores over night). More OC would need vcore raise, and I am not fond of going there, even if the cooling can cope... Besides, I have yet to see the CPU being the bottleneck here and I doubt it is...

alrighty,

I just deinstalled all mods and the game itself, deleted the program files\oblivion directory as well as the my games/oblivion dir, then went into registry and deleted all remaining traces of oblivion.

then i installed:
Oblivion
Shivering Isles
SI patch 1.2.0416
DLCs
Unofficial Obl. Patch 3.2
Unofficial SI Patch 1.4
Unoffical Obl. Patch 3.2.4 Hotfix
Unoffical DLC Patches 1.5

I ran TES4LODGen and will now try "vanilla" exiting sewers...

Settings:
1680x1050
High textures
viewing distance: 100
trees ~ 50%
objects etc ~ 40%
gras ~ 40%
water high, reflections and ripples on
HDR enabled
(etc etc: not all on max, but everything where I want it to play)

leaving sewers, vanilla obl: 40-60fps!

Now I will install FCOM (according to the out of date dev_akm FCOM install guide. It still applies with the order/general directon, yes?). And yes, I have UFCOM and yes I have USIP MOBS for FCOM

So FPS exiting sewers seems a little lower, but still quite playable. Looks good so far. Now slowly adding more mods that I really would like to have...

also, some issues have/will crop up:
- Fast travel points to the cities available (minor, I can refrain from using them until I visited there myself)
- Drop Lit Torch not working (minor, have a standalone mod for it)

Famous last words... it's still worth checking. You're doing a rather aggressive OC.

What ATI driver are you using the New Ones are quite buggy after all..Go back to 9.3 thru 9.8 Series..

9.10 is the last Catalyst driver that works properly with Oblivion. 9.11 and 9.12 work as long as you're willing to run with exterior shadows at 0.

Use of CCC settings has no bearing on it, it's broken regardless. Version 10.1 is broken regardless of shadow settings. I've filed a bug report with AMD/ATI but their forums indicate they don't listen.

MMM Lich Patch is not needed anymore with MMM 3.7b3 BSA contain it already

Yes, you need to check off those features in bash patch- else it will not work right, invent is needed for item interfchanges, import cells is needed for UOP settings, script is needed for UOP + OOO Compatiblity, Names so that you get correct names in game on items, Relations for faction changes that FCOM make..All needed once again..

Load looks alright to me, but perhaps run it through boss..

the mod list / load order is BOSSed :)

thanks for confirming my bashed patch settings... :)

using ati 9.9 so i am in the green.

and what can i say... consider my system tested. its not overheating...

Added Mods:
- Darker Dungeons
- All+5AttributeModifiers
- AllInOneBasemant
- ATakesAll
- CliffBetterLetters
- MoreBooksTeach
- DropLitTorchesOBSE
- P1DKeyChain
- ToggleableQuantityPrompt
- Dungeon/Exteriour Actors have Torches (DT)
- Map Markers
- Saddlebags

FPS when exiting sewer still well playable (although, I feel like they went down. But I could be wrong)
Have yet to test REAL performance hit from Darker Dungeons (if any) and Actors have Torches

Dropping Lit Torches working now

Mods that will be tested/I would like to have (and have already downloaded)

- All Natural (WeatherMod, mainly for Indoor Weather, Darker Nights and possibly Real Lights)
- Storms and Sounds (to enhance the weather mod)
- Deadly Reflex (to allow for more versatile fights)
- Stealth Overhaul (so stealth is more usefull)
- Dousing the flames (for a bit more immersion), possibly even "rebuild kvatch"
- Enhanced Vegetation and Enhanced Water 2.0 and natural habitat (for immersion but ONLY if they wont kill too many fps)
- Quest Award Leveler
- Supreme Magicka (to enhance the magic system)
- Animated Light Windows (immersion) - I doubt it will have a noticable fps hit
- and add another bunch of immersion mods that i only have yet read about... but first things first, getting the game to run decent...

- any VWD mod that wont kill too many FPS - AREVWD is almost certain too much a fps killer, maybe try Tamriel VWD again...
- better lava texture
- maybe even some sound mods (like atmospheric oblivion)

- Performance enhancing mods:
- oblivion stutter remover
- Oblivion Script Optimizer?
- LowPolyGras
- many more (will post later)

Out of curiosity, is vsync on or off?
I know some people reported huge fps increases by turning it off...

Anyway I've got an ATI 4890 1Gb and a quad core 2.4Ghz not overclocked with all the texture packs and Oblivion wasn't very fluid(nothing as bad as 10 fps though) in 1680x1050(with all the settings set to max and HDR+AA(forced through CCC)). Finally decided to run it in 1280x800 where it looks nearly the same with AA but the FPS is extremely fluid(you will still get stutters though if you don't use Oblivion Stutter Remover)...

Anyway just to say don't expect too much even with a high end computer, oblivion is a beast that always demand more :).

vsync is on. you might be right, I should test with it off in case it is the culprit

And I would rather play in 1680x1050, the native res of my screen without extensive filtering of textures or anti alias then in lower res with it enabled. But to each its own. I still hope that for you the texture packs and the AA killed the fps, not the resolution and it will work out for me...

installed some more mods:
- All Natural (EW+NW) + Indoor Weather + Real Lights (which can be disabled in case it will take too much power)
- Storms & Sounds
- Animated Window Lightning System

Alright, so far its looking - well ok... i feel like the fps have declined further, but that might be because the more mods i install, the more i run around and fight and am more critic about the fps... anyway, so far, its well playble above 20fps, even hitting 50-60 now and then...

installing more mods:
- some nightsky textures (afaik same size then vanilla)
- better gold textures (afaik same size then vanilla)
- dousing the flames
- super hotkeys

Well done belthias! I hope UK47Howard reads this... He steadfastly refused for 2 days to reinstall before finally doing it. Could have saved him a bundle of times and nerves if he did it immediately like you did...

Have you got Drop Lit Torches (DLT) as a separate-from-OOO mod now? If it's working now for you fine. But I had the same issue and there is a solution to get it working again from within OOO, you don't really need the separate DLT mod. It involves setting a Wrye Bach tag for "Scripts" in the OscuroOblivionOverhaul.esp. I can tell you the rest if you like, we had that discussion like 10 days ago or even less.

- any VWD mod that wont kill too many FPS

There's no such thing. VWD by nature is a FPS killer, that's why Bethesda didn't include very many objects. But RAEVWD is the most optimized that's available right now, and probably always will be, so if you insist on having VWD you should go for that one. It's also less buggy than the rest, with less artifacts/anomilies appearing in the game.
