Oblivion Mods, whats the best.

Post » Wed May 09, 2012 12:48 am

Yesterday I had bought Oblivion from steam even though i already have it for my PS3, so I want to know what the best mods are for this, like needs or just fun little things. Also I am extremely new to the whole PC thing so if you could please tell me how to install them.

Well, there's plenty :P
First thing: you should Download Wrye Bash and Oblivion Mod manager, and learn how to use them
Then get OBSE (Oblivion Script Extender) in order to make most of mods work.
Mandatory are the Unofficial Oblivion Patch, Unofficial Shivering Isles Patch and Unofficial Official Mods Patch (bugfixes)

Then there is another major problem: level scaling of enemies and equipment.
For this problem there are the scaling overhauls. Those are big mods which change your experience in many ways.
http://www.gamesas.com/topic/820948-scaling-overhaul-comparison/ is a comparison between those overhauls. Add to these listed here CUO (Cyrodiil Upgrade Overhaul, a so-called "unleveler", very lore-friendly and with a good amount of quests) by Giskard, and the newborn Oblivion Intensity by Crionaut (really interesting, which mixes some of the above and adds its own content), and the cratur overhaul WAC (Waalx Animals and Creatures) by Waalx

The magic system needs a refreshing, so there are Less Annoying Magic Experience (by bg2408) and Supreme Magicka (by StrategyMaster). Both are really good, but maybe the first is more played due to the fact it is required by one of the most popular quest mods out here (Integration: the Stranded Light)

Now there is the last big issue to solve (In my opinion): the levelling system.
nGCD and Bundlement from Fundament (both by tejon) are a good combination in order to have a slower, smoother and smarter levelling.

Those are the most important changes needed in my opinion. I hope, I've been useful. Good "hunting" :)

If you get svcked into his world though, dont go mentioning Wrye Bash in his presence, you will get eaten and spat out. He is banned here, and on TESNexus for good reason - Anyway I had better stop talking about that subject before our posts get pruned. Be warned.

Very useful for complete newbies http://tescosi.com/wiki/Oblivion

Its a wall of text ... But you will end up following most of the advice that has been collected there one way or another - May aswell start reading now.

Then use the top 100 on TESNexus for starters. My sig has a few tips too

On the subject of overhauls - You will come across OOO, FCOM a LOT .. They are good, but dont start out with them, move up towards those kind of installations when you get more expert at modding the game.

And whatever you read about Archive Invalidation - Do yourself a favour and ONLY use BSA Redirection, dont be tempted by old advice or an old mods readme to change to BSA Alteration .. You will regret it at some point.

Another trouble saver, if you haven't already - Install the game OUTSIDE of C:\Program files\

The default location for the game to install is fine if you dont want to mod the game - To mod the game you need to install tools as mentioned above, and windows UAC is going to strangle them.

Un-install the game, then re-install to say C:\Oblivion, or another hard drive partition away from your system D:\Oblivion for example.

If you installed via steam, also un-install steam, re-install that first (again outside of C:\Program files\) then re-install the game (you can make a backup of the game files before you un-install steam, to make re-installling easier https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=7418-YUBN-8129 )

Thanks guys, but still not sure how to install all the mods.
Just made a few edits in my last post, so review that first.

Then when you have read the TESCosi site I linked, you can proceed to installing mods -

Do them one at a time

And read the mod readme/description very carefully, so that the author does not chew your ears off for not reading all the work he/she has put into helping you.

I think thats enough to start with - There's no easy way to mod this game, it needs a bit of effort in understanding on your part. Good luck. :)

The site Alt3rn1ty linked provides excellent basic (and not so basic) advice, including installation procedures. I too recommend using Wrye Bash for this. Many find OBMM easier to master, but it's not as full-featured. In the old days you pretty much needed to have both installed. Nowadays, except for a very few specific mods, Wrye Bash alone suffices. There is certainly no harm in installing both. Whichever way you go supplement it with BOSS (Better Oblivion Sorting System), which will insure your mod's ESPs and ESMs load in the proper order.

You having already played the game on console, a good way to wet your feet is think on an aspect of gameplay dissatisfied you. Chances are there are mods that "fix" it. For me, it was nighttime adventuring. Cyrodiil's overbright night sky bothered me from day-one. Therefore one of the first mods I searched for was a night sky darkener. I settled for that old standby "Original Color - Darker Nights" but there are others. To compliment that I installed Animated Window Lighting System (and Chimneys) which lights up building windows during evening hours and inclement weather. Later on I further improved evening skies with a "nebula" and a mod that provides meteor shows during crystal clear nights. With night skies so much darker I also installed a mod that makes torch use far more functional.

That's just one example, and of course might not appeal to you.

OBSE will not install for my steam version of Oblivion, its possibly because its still in the steam folder. But OBSE says you need to have Steam Community Enabled which i do.
