Oblivion Online Chat

Post » Tue Mar 15, 2011 3:26 am

Don't get me wrong; I'm not asking for another Oblivion Online, but wouldn't it be possible and pretty cool to have a chat application like Skype or w/e running from within Oblivion? I think this would be a lot of fun and there could be a server where you could connect to other users who are playing Oblivion, and just talk about what you're doing, share experiences etc. It seems pretty easy to me but I don't know much about modding and internet. http://www.moddb.com...mages/the-gui-1 OblivionOnline already had a chat featured in it. So it seems at least they got this far... looks to me like it can be done. What do y'all think?

Also linking back to TESNexus, http://thenexusforums.com/index.php?showtopic=190474 I have a thread about it there too.

Well, we'd need some sort of dedicated server and a steady internet connection and all of that sort of thing, I'd imagine. It seems like it'd be much easier to get a third party chat room or an instant messenger that runs alongside your game. ;)

Use Steam, best bang for your buck.
You don't even need to own a steam game to use the steam client. The client is completely free to install and use.
Just use the "add non-Steam game..." and select your oblivion.exe or your obse_loader.exe
Steam not only has in game text chat, but it also has an voice support and an in-build web browser.
Create an oblivion/morrowind/Bethesda fan steam group and invite your friends.
No extra coding, no extra modding, no extra hassle required.

I always load obse through steam and in my experience it does not effect stability at all, and my oblivion directory is now fat with 16.8GB of data.

The one problem with this, morrowind seems to object to being loaded through steam, or at least when I tested it last time it did...they may have fixed this since Bethesda official released through steam.

EDIT: I am in no way associated with valve or steam, I just use it alot

Whilst it's a good idea there are already 3rd party programs that can do that, as mentioned above.

I'm against Steam (I simply hate the fact that certain games "require" Steam to even play ticks me off) so i use x-fire instead, it does everything that Steam does and a lot more for less system resources.
