Oblivion Quiz Thread #21

Welcome to the Oblivion Quiz Thread

Knowing a great deal is not the same as being smart; intelligence is not information alone but also judgment,
the manner in which information is collected and used.
- Dr. Carl Sagan

Rules

1. Only one question should be asked at a time.

2. The first person to answer correctly will be responsible for providing the next question.

3. If you know that you will not be able to stay to validate a response to your question within 30 minutes, either please don't ask or someone else should ask another question to keep the quiz flowing.

4. Be patient. It can take time to come up with a good question. If you answer a question correctly, you will have 10 minutes to come up with your own question. Your time will start when your answer is validated. After that time someone else may take over.

5. Please base you questions on things that are to be found in unmodded Oblivion, Shivering Isles and the DLCs. Try not to include questions that involve lore that cannot be found in game, or rely only on the Construction Set, Console Codes, or Glitches to answer.

6. PLEASE DO NOT SPAM If you have a question about the rules or about anything that is not Quiz related, please refrain from posting it in this thread because it will make the moderators grumpy.

7. Finally, if you feel the need to discuss a question, please do so using the PM feature.

8. Please let the person who asked the question say which answer is correct, unless that person is offline and has been for 20-30 minutes. Then anyone else may ask the next question.

Who produces the "glorious cheeses of Skingrad!" ?

Sorry, you were incorrect. The figurine in the Daedric quest is only of the hound.

I want to say near where Umbra is (like, inside the ruin) however, I can't be too sure as i havent done the Umbra quest in a long time.

My question though; "How many bandits are there in the unmarked house?"

Wow, your question's a really good one! I like it; it's actually quite hard, for a change.

Ding Ding Ding. Fort Roebeck it is. On a bedpost surrounded by candles.

All yours, Savlian.

I can't monitor the answers much right now, so I'll ask an easy one...

What spell can be used both offensively and defensively?

I'm gonna wing it and say a Telekinesis spell, I seem to recall reading on a loading screen that you can use it to injure enemies, but at the same time you could (theoretically) use it to block their hits.

No, I dont' think so sorry. Telekinesis can't really be used offensively. I wish it could. There are mods that allow it to be used that way -- ie push back enemies, but not in the actually game. Actually I don't think it can be used defensively either.

Let me be more specific about what I mean by defensively and offensively: the spell can be used on your character to your benefit in battle, and can be used on enemy NPCs and creatures to their detriment.

EDIT: added the "in battle" part. I'm not talking about a destruction spell on self to level destruction for example. I'm referring to a "normal, typical, and intended" use of the spell.

Would it be absorb health? Use it and you'll get health and the enemy loses theirs.

Not what I was thinking of. It's not really offensive. It doesn't really hinder the enemy in any way it just helps you. But I could see your point. There is I think another spell that is more directly offensive and defensive.

I recommend leaving my question stand, particularly since you said "open floor"

So my question still stands for the moment: What spell is meant to be both offensive and defensive?

Would it be absorb health? Use it and you'll get health and the enemy loses theirs.

No, not by my definition. I don't think you can use absorb health on self to your benefit.

I really thought this was an easy one.

Oh, right, it's a spell you cast on self.

Could it be invisibility?

No because invisibility cast on an enemy does not work to their detriment.

This is harder than I thought it would be so I'm going to give a hint:

Though it can be used both offensively and defensively (by casting on either your character or an enemy), it is classified as defensive so using it on another NPC does not count as an attack. However, from Sigil Stones this effect can only be applied to an offensive weapon.

One more guess at it, I'll say Spell Reflection. If you absorb the reflected spell, it could make a net positive to your magicka.

Edit: n/m, it must be Dispel.

Correct!

With dispel you can remove affects other spell casts put on your character, such as burden or duration destruction spells (though it doesn't work on abilities).

You can also use dispel to remove summons and other buffs that enemies put on themselves.

Answer by both UnclePain and 3 minutes later by Christo123.

However in a previous incorrect answer, UnclePain said he was leaving the floor open. So I guess either can ask the next question??

Yep, open floor, so Chriso123 or whoever may go ahead.

Heh... Dispel it was. I was definitely overthinking the question.

Same, now that I think about it. A lot easier than I made it out to be.

Anyway, I'm going to leave the floor open.
