Oblivion vs Red Dead Redemption

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 9:05 am

I saw a recent trailer ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aOpKJ6hjPIM ) for Red Dead Redemption and it looks awesome. I remember when Rockstar first made San Andreas and I loved it, but always wanted more of a wilderness feel. I searched for other games but the only rural, free roaming experience I found was Gun, which I couldn't stand. The controls were annoying plus it didn't really have much in the way of a grand landspace. I had pretty much given up hope of finding a sandbox wilderness game.

Then I came across Oblivion. It had/has everything I wanted in a game: great creatures/monsters, good storylines and plenty of character development.

I think I would have been more excited about Red Dead Redemption if Oblivion hadn't of come out. While the two themes are different (western vs medieval/fantasy), they both share similarities: both set in mainly rural environments, both contain plenty of horses, brown bears and (I think) boars, and both seem to be graphically on-par with one another (Oblivion, played on a high end PC, is breathtaking, even by todays standards).

I'm wondering if Red Dead Redemption is as large as Oblivion, anyone know?

I also wonder if they've put invisible walls in, though whilst Oblivion DOES have invisible walls, these can be taken out through the ini file.

I also wonder if anyone here has been thinking about the points I have mentioned in this thread, and I would love to hear some feedback from you guys.

Thanks for reading!

Might I suggest finding a Red Dead Redemption forum ot ask those question on? You'll get an answer to your question quicker that way.

Looking this up: Oblivions TOTAL map is 4x4 miles (16 SQ miles), but you are onlly able to access less than 10 sq miles of it

GTA: SA was about 15 sq miles total so about 13.5 sq miles you could access.

Red Dead Redemption is going to be one of those "lets find out" since it just released 2 days ago (tho maybe Rockstar has released this number somewhere).

EDIT: I'm not sure how accurate some of those numbers are (tho I seem to recall the Oblivion ones being about right from other times I've looked into this issue). The reason I question this is the source lists Guild Wars Nightfall as being nearly 50,000 sq miles.....I've played the game and it's closer to 100 sq miles for the total map with only about 1/2 of that actual playable areas (it's big, just not THAT big).

Actually, I made this OP connecting Oblivion AND Red Dead Redemption. If I was ONLY talking about the latter, THEN you'd have a point.

As for Cyrodiil's size, I thought it covered the whole 16 sqm, not 10. I just did some reading elsewhere and I am sure 16 sq miles is right. Maybe adding the outer border regions it would be even bigger, perhaps 20+? But can anyone confirm this?

The map is 16 sq. miles, but there are alot of areas where we can't go in the game without the dreaded message showing up: "You can't go that way..."

On-topic, if Red Head Redemption or whatever it's called is any good, I'll be all over it..sometime in the year 2013 after I've finally finished Oblvion AND Morrowind.

Removing borders does guarantee the 16 sq m I take it? I removed the borders in the ini file a while back and I couldn't go back to playing Oblivion with borders enabled. That was the first (and best) modification I ever used.

Gaaarrrr so jealous over here!

Yea, I'd assume you'd get all 16 square miles (possibly more) with mods, but I don't know for sure cuz I'm on a PS3....don't know what that mod actually entails.

Well it wasn't actually a mod I got from tesnexsus or anything, it was a self-mod that, if you are playing Oblivion on the PC, you can simply go to it's ini file and remove the borders manually. UESPwiki actually listed this method too.

But with the borders removed you have to be a little careful not to fall through the floor lol, which happens if you walk too far, plus eventually trees end up being partly off the ground and the land textures become poorer. When that starts to happen it's best to turn back. BUT there is still quite a bit of landspace to play with and that huge bulk-land consisting of Elswyre and Valenwood is fun to travel across if you're planning on a hike to Leyawin from Anvil (or visa-versa).

I haven't come across any mods that have buildings in those regions so if anyone has any suggestions please can you say so. Thanks.

Oh and if you ever get Oblivion for the PC I really recommend it. I was going to get it for the Playstation3 but after reading about the advantages for PC, I went with that. I'm glad I did.

For some reason the author of the mod has made the file hidden over on tesnexus.com. I haven't played it myself, but keep an eye on the Elsweyr the Deserts of Anequina mod.

It looks like Red Dead Redemption is in third person only. If that is so, I'll never play it.

If it doesn't allow 1st person then that would be a shame. However, 3rd person is still good. I think actually during combat 3rd is better personally. For exploring, I'd go with 1st. But I think RDR is going to be an awesome game and I'm not going to write it off even if it doesn't allow for 1st person. Biohazard never allowed 3rd person (which was annoying) but it was such a good game I could overlook that. RDR will be great, probably not as good as Oblivion though (not many games are tbh).

Comparing a first-person, open-world RPG(with little focus on 3rd person) to a third-person, open-world, shooter doesn't really work. When Red Dead Redemption gets lore, character advancement/skills, dungeons, a first-person view, and three predecessors, with the oldest being 16 years old, that have themselves deeply rooted in RPG history as being unique for being open-ended with actual things to do besides just running around and killing people, then I will consider comparing Red Dead Redemption to Oblivion. Either way, I prefer Oblivion.

Ty :D I would have put up the link but it only loads up a blank page on tesnexus.com that mentions the author has made the file hidden.

These VS threads don't fare well and thus they are mentioned in our rules. Read them to find out. :)
