Oblivion severly underperforming

Post » Tue Mar 09, 2010 1:33 am

Oblivion is running at frame rates as low as 8 FPS. Crysis, Metro 2033, Assassin's creed, ArmA 2: Operation Arrowhead, and Amnesia all run perfectly at the highest settings but for some reason Oblivion does not run well at all. I got my PC 2 weeks ago, hardware is fine and drivers are all up to date, including the new ATI Catalyst 10.12 driver. Please help me get Oblivion running smoothly, it is my favorite game (Had it on the 360)

My PC specs go as follows.

PC: Asus N61Jq-XV1
CPU: Intel Core i7 - 740QM (1.7-2.8GHZ)
Graphics Card: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5730; VRAM 1GB
OS: Windows 7 64 bit Home Premium
RAM: 4GB

My guess is you either have to many processes running (Oblivion hates to share) or your sound solution is inadequate.

To test sound, in the ...\Documents\mygames\oblivion\Oblivion.ini file locate:

bMusicEnabled=1
bSoundEnabled=1

And change both 1's to 0

For the rest of it Please post a "Dxdiag" report:

Start (Vista or 7), type in "dxdiag" (without the quotes), save the report to a desktop text file (default). Copy and paste the results (the whole thing) here in your thread.

Graphics Card: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5730; VRAM 1GB

That is a fairly low level video card designed more for video playback and surfing the internet rather than graphic intensive games - so you probably need to adjust the setting accordingly -- Another possible problem is the ATI 57xx series cards are sometimes autodetected as an older Nvidia FX57xx version card and settings are defaulted to those it would use (and the Nvidia FX series had shader problems so OB shuts off many of the shaders when this happens !) - and this can also cause stability and performance problems since Nvidia and ATI use different methods to implement things so the game thinking it is running an Nvidia card is not good - when you first launched did it set OB to Ultra Low settings ?? (if so then it did think it was an Nvidia FX series card and you need to use the presets to select another default set if settings (ie. on my 5770 I have to reset it to Ultra High or I have a very ugly looking game with all of the shaders disabled when auto detects selects Ultra LOw - but a MOBILITY 5730 is a much lower performance card than the desktop version 5770 so Ultra High would probably not work well for your system (perhaps try medium preset instead) )

Wait, now I am confused. Everybody has been telling me it should run easily with my hardware on ultra settings. I can play Metro 2033 and Crysis on the highest settings and the Futuremark game-o-meter or whatever told me my system was way past the optimal requirements for oblivion. even on ultra low settings oblivion gets super low FPS.

Those that were telling you that did realize it was a MOBILITY 5730 correct ?? That is at best a mid level performer ( http://optimitza.cat/news/2010/05/06/laptop-graphics-card-comparison-ati-mobility-radeon-hd-5870-5850-5730-5650-5470-and-nvidia-geforce-gtx-285m-gtx-260m-gts-360m-gt-330m-310m/ ) - notice the 5730 scores about 3623 on the Vantage GPU score now compare that to a http://www.hardwarecanucks.com/news/video/ati-radeon-hd-5770-performance-benchmarks-leaked/which scores about 8714 on the same test.

the Mobility 5730 has memory bandwidth of 25.6GB\s vs. the 5770 @ 76.8GB\s - a pixel fill rate of 5.2 gigapixels\sec vs 13.2 Gp\s on the 5770 , etc. so it is quite a bit lower performance than a 5770 which is a good card for OB at a moderate resolution but even the 5770 will struggle at times in OB at higher resolutions and MAX settings -- ALso note on the comparison of laptop cards they do not list a crysis FPS for the 5730 but a slightly lower 335M card only gets 25 FPS @1024 x 768 screen resolution (so barely playable at a very low resolution on high settings in Crysis - but crysis IIRC is also more CPU dependent than GPU vs. OB which is more GPU dependent)

I told them it was a 5730. Future mark autodetects hardware so it obviously knew. You are most likely right about Crysis being more CPU dependant, I get 45 FPS on high and 35 in metro 2033. That still doesn't explain why I have severe lag on medium and low settings in oblivion though.

From everything else I've read, Oblivion is if anything extremely CPU dependent? Ofcourse you still need alot of memory on your GPU to be able to handle the big texture replacers that increase VRAM usage however.

Presumably you have actually tried setting it to run on higher graphic settings, in case the game is mistaking your card for an old NVidia? If you set the graphics to high, does it make the lag any worse?

Also, maybe I missed it, but did you do the test suggested, turning off the sound in the ini?

I have run graphics at every possible settings. I turned off the sound in the ini and I still had the problem. I think oblivion just hates my computer. I really want to play it though, I think it will help the boredom of downtime in Afghanistan, but if there is nothing left to be done I can always just turn to Fallout XD (New Vegas also plays on high settings perfectly, figure that one out)

Try doing a http://support.microsoft.com/kb/331796. (yes, that is for vista, 7 should be pretty much the same.) see if that improves the games attitude any.
