Oblivion vs Skyrim - Graphic Comparison

Post » Sun May 29, 2011 2:11 am

Uh, it's really not hard to realize the polycount is at least 2x on environmental assets and at least 1.5x on character assets. The resolutions are a good 2x-2.5x what Oblivion was for environmental assets and character assets are at least 1.75x. Particle effects are at least 2x what Oblivion had with LOD about 2-3x more noticeable. Animations are also FAR better than Oblivion and the facial features have much better proportion. I honestly don't know why some of you can't see this. Maybe it's time for a monitor upgrade to 1080p at least.

And your eyes are 68.3 percent blind.

The only thing I hate about this trailer is the sudden realisation that I'm gonna have to find a job if I want to play it.

That has happened to me with:

- Quake.
- Quake II.
- Quake III Arena.
- Unreal.
- Unreal 2.
- Morrowind.
- Oblivion.

...and more games I can even remember.

It's only natural to feel that way, as the tech advances and more graphically-detailed games are released.

they have fixed most of the big issues that bugged me about oblivion.....

they didnt design the gameworld around a big bowl shape where you can see everything from the middle or see the middle from anywhere. it looks like the mountains act as visual dividers........and the mountains look great. oblivions mountains were smaller than hills ive seen around here and im in wisconsin not exactlly known for mountains or buffs. the mountains in skyrim look like actual mountains and i cant wait to try and climb one of those svckers. :)

shadows.......supposedly everything casts realtime shadows and that is a huge improvement.

HDR looks loads better than oblivion, im hoping they are using real time global lighting but i cant tell really from the trailer.

water is much improved......the only thing that looked off were the rapids which uncharted on PS3 did much better.

the textures svck that but that is the console version so what do you expect, consoles cant do hi rez textures or high AA. the PC version will be better im sure and textures are one of the easiest things to mod in.

areas look unique and different. they have a tundra, a forest, what looks like a beach and of course high mountainous areas the only thing i hope is in that i didnt see are fjords........cause in a viking game you have to have fjords.

and they dont have those silly billboard tress anymore...........yeah. :)

Wait, wait, wait... There's actually a point in comparing graphics between a five year old game and a game that is yet to be released?

I thought it was somewhat obvious that the graphics would be updated.

Oblivion = Next-Gen game
Skyrim = Current-Gen game

^ This is why people are complaining about the graphics.

That first picture comparsion isnt fair, as the skyrim picture from character is from cutscene, but oblivion picture is from real game picture.
Forest look more bad than in oblivion. Actually it looks horrible mess, but they might still improve it.
Also i dont like town road texture. I think it is going to make me ill, by walking there and watching that road. They should blurry that road texture in the further distance, or increase texture resolution to make it look better in the long distances. Buildings looks good.

Oh wow! I find the environments are not THAT big of a difference, but the improvement of character models and buildings is staggering.

The mountains look completely different (I love the touch of the mist--I wonder how that's going to work in the game), forests actually have grass, things actually cast shadows, the environment is more diverse. My one complaint is the sort of Uruk Hai style helmet (I'm not sure if I agree with the artistic choice there: I also don't see the helmet as being very protective, since it looks like it could wobble around on his head [what's holding it steady?]).

That is not a cut-scene. It has been confirmed multiple times that everything in the gameplay trailer was well, gameplay. The only thing that was not exactly how it will be in-game was the shots of Alduin's Wall taken from the teaser trailer. (And obviously excluding cinematic camera angles for combat)

It's not a cutscene, that's in game, just the camera isn't centered on the player. It was all rendered in game, apart from the wall.

BF3 nearly looks a gen ahead and has HUGE maps like a BSG game.

Maps in the battlefield games are minuscule compared to those in the TES series. The largest BF2 map was around 4 km2. Additionally, most of the map landscape is barren, with static buildings.

No, it's been confirmed that it's in-game, not gameplay. The animations and everything else in the fight scene with the dragon were all scripted.

The graphics aren't what's great about The Elder Scrolls, in my opinion.

That said, there's definitely improvement, which is always nice.

Considering they have 8 months till deathline, I'm not worried about shabby graphics that are 'not up to standards'.
As for the trailer being scripted... it's a good point. We'll have to wait for actual gameplay demo's before we can jump to conclusions.
Best advice: => Wait and see <=

The faces are a definite improvement over Oblivion's and Fallout 3's, but.. that's kinda obvious they would have been.
More importantly, how are the faces and characters compared to other games?

Here's a few screenies of RDR:

http://images.bit-tech.net/content_images/2010/05/red-dead-redemption-review/red-dead-redemption-screen-6.jpg

Skyrim's: http://www.tesnexus.com/imageshare/images/520246-1298584608.jpg

The skin, face and armor in the Skyrim screen is really low-res. And notice the really bad lighting as well, which kinda reminds you of Oblivion's HDR.
It's the console version, but so is RDR. They could spare some higher res textures on at least skin, face and armor, since they aren't rendered too often as environment is. The lighting should be fixed/tweaked as well. It shouldn't look like that.

Everyone who says the graphics aren't a major improvement is an idiot. First off, we have on seen the console graphics. THE GRAPHICS ON THE PC WILL LOOK MUCH BETTER. SO shut up, and stop complaining, these graphics are stellar on the console, and will be on the PC.

I agree, but I'm sure they've been testing what works best for the Xbox's performance, and we'll end up with what works and keeps the game stable.

There is some solid graphical improvement to be sure, but there should be. Oblivion is almost 5 years old, and wasn't a very good looking game for its time. However, the graphics are not "amazing" or "jaw dropping" by any stretch of the imagination.

With that said graphics don't do anything for me. The game looks fun and seems like its going to have a great atmosphere... which is far more important.

Wow, Oblivion was a GREAT looking game for its time, especially if you played it on PC. What game released in 2006 was jaw droppingly better? Either way, I agree the actual game play is a more important aspect, but still.

What's funny is that it wasn't even that long ago (ok, maybe it was...) that I was holding up Oblivion screenshots next to other games and thinking "oh my god - this is incredible."
