Oblivion vs Skyrim - Graphic Comparison

Post » Sun May 29, 2011 1:35 am

Im not worried at all about the graphics. TES is all about getting immersed in this living, breathing world. And every TES has succeded this far. Why would it stop now? ;)

to tell you the truth, every time that i play oblivion im still stunned by the graphics, so any improvement made to it would just be great, remember guys, gameplay is the most important, what i would really want is a high improvement in the fighting system.

No, no there hasn't been games in the last 2 years with as good of graphics as this. You know why? This is the console version. Your standards of graphics are set in PC mode and you think it looks terrible but if you had played console games before, you would know that these graphics are insane for the console, so the PC version graphics are going to look insane. Too many people have no perspective because they are either on the console side or the PC side of graphics. You have to see graphics from both and realize how they scale.

Pc graphics will have high rez textures and AA whoo hoo. Unless they add full dx11 support i will remain unimpressed until quarl comes along. Hell even opengl 4.1; but i know previously ES games have been dx so...

Shadows are everything, just look at town 1, the shadows really bring the Skyrim pic to life, if the shadows however would be removed it would still look better than Oblivion in every single way, I just love the shadows of Skyrim, no more lego brick-Oblivion style shadows!

This is very true. My brother and I perceived this right away on the first released screenshots and now seeing it in movment aswell.
It seems Beth went with a more detail "extream bump mapping" on a majority of things that it starts to look really bad.
For example, the comparison of the forest, It seems oblivion's forest are more simple but are more smoother to the eye compared to Skyrim's overdone bumpmapping which creates a feeling of a bad texture artist...
But all aside, this is what PC Modding is for. I will be the first at my local game store to get a copy day 1!

This is where parallax mapping and tessellation come in.

No wonder most of the posts in this forum are completely ignored by Bethesda staff.

Oh and anisotropic filtering, AAA, improved water features like full reflections, longer draw distance, HDR+Bloom combinations, higher quality shadows, grass shadows, possible dx11 support, window reflections, ambient occlusion and so on. Yep, only higher res textures and AA....

Went back and looked at the first Oblivion Game Trailer.

The difference between Oblivion and Skyrim at this stage is like night and day.

Can't wait until it is done

These are features by default in PC games. Todd wasn't listing PC features, he was just giving a general answer. Those options I mentioned except for Ambient Occlusion and possible dx11 support are all inherent features of PCs and you don't need people to say they exist, it's kind've self explanatory.

Some of you almost seem like your svcking up to bethesda and defending them...in at least this image comparing the forests, Skyrim does not look much better at all. However I agree that the others show a lot of improvement.
Actually Oblivions forrests seemed a bit empty in comparison, its the grass mostly which lets Skyrim down imo.

I don't understand the people claiming Oblivion wasn't good looking for its time. It was not just good looking for its time, it was good looking for some time after it came out too (and it still looks great to me)! It needed some hefty hardware to run well relative to the time it came out.

Oblivion was very good looking for it's time, most professionals said it was the best looking game at it's time with loads of content, yes a 20 hours game with small levels would look better but it's not a fair competition.

And yes the trailer confirmed to be xbox360, rendering it on a pc with two gtx 580 would look better but someone on internet would catch it and all hell would break loose.

I say it looks far better, far more detailed, the forest scene is not much better but another style and also look less uniform. Forests around Bruma looked worse than around Anvil.

And even if they aren't included out of the box with Skyrim, there'll undoubtedly be graphics card drivers (or at least our eventual Skyrim Graphics Extender) to support those features. If I recall, Oblivion originally couldn't run HDR and anti-aliasing simultaneously for Vivec knows what reason: but starting with certain Nvidia card models and drivers, the ability to enable both was restored for PC users.

Check http://www.elderscrolls.com/community/welcome-back-elder-scrolls/

We then rewrote all the major graphics and gameplay systems including lighting, shadows, level of detail, animation, interface, scripting, dialogue, quest systems, melee, magic, and more. All of those changes made it into our internal editor as well. So much had changed that we decided to call the engine and editor by a new name, the Creation Engine and the Creation Kit.

So I guess Creation Engine is not that far from Gamebryo.

And for the record, I think that all looks amazing (except that horrible flood shown in the trailer)

Although it looks good, I wish they took DICE's approach with BF3 and built the game with PC in mind.

It makes a huge difference in terms of gfx. BF3 nearly looks a gen ahead and has HUGE maps like a BSG game.

The two games are 5 years apart, so you can be sure to see some type of graphical reconstruction for the better on a good part of the Game. Also, with the picture comparisons, Skyrim are cinimatic Graphic's, so based on those pictures you cannot be entirely sure. Either way, I'm sure we will see improvement in Skyrim.

You're a PC game?

Anyway have you seen many games of this scale with better graphics?

Just Cause 2 (imagine if bethesda had modified that engine to make Skyrim)
and id say GTA 4 in some aspects.

That said i'll still enjoy Skyrim no matter how it looked. As long as it improves on the main flaws of Oblivion and make a better story i'll be happy.

Everything looks a whole lot better in those comparisons...
Except for... http://gamestage.com.br/temp/forest.jpg
That doesn't look very good if I have to be 100% honest.
The waterfalls don't look either in Skyrim.

Other than that, amazing game, amazing graphics. Just. Amazing :D

Funny you should pick that out - it was the one I thought the most impressive.
The Oblivion shot looks like a mellow fantasy forest that I would LIKE to be in and the Skyrim forest looks like a real live forest like one's I HAVE been in. (minus the statue's head sticking out of the bush)

The Skyrim forest looks more like a mountain forest where danger lurks whereas the Oblivion one looks like a nice place to bring the family for a picnic.
As for the waterfalls - yeah a bit disappointing as I couldn't see any salmon jumping.
