Oblivion vs Skyrim - Graphic Comparison

Post » Sun May 29, 2011 2:24 am

If the graphics in the video are from PC, then very disappointing. If it is from Xbox, then it is a decent improvement considering it is the same hardware. Seriously, people who say the graphics are amazing are most likely xbox or ps3 gamers, those who arn't impressed are most likely PC gamers. It's a logical conclusion. Seriously, compared to every game I have played lately (on PC), these graphics are not really impressive...

Yeah your right, i play on Xbox 360 and i think this game looks amazing. I'm glad i haven't been spoiled by high-end PC graphics cause i'm super excited about this.

To be honest, the oblivion forrest looked way better than Skyrim, sadly. Draw-distance is way better in Skyrim. Animations and characters look more polished. creatures also look more polished.

I expected much more after five years of development and a new engine.

Why don't you people start comparing the two games when you have a finished product of Skyrim to look at yourselves instead of going off a two minutes of in-game footage.

I could have sworn Oblivion looked better. I guess those are the nostalgia goggles (or heavy modding...) talking.

The graphics are not as big a jump as I was expecting from the "looks like a next gen game" comment, but they are nice. Especially in motion, when you don't have time to sit there and critique every single thing.

I was disappointed with the dragon textures when I first watched the trailer, but I was extremely impressed with the one shot of the PC walking through the town.

I like how they are "proudly" showing off the third person perspective. Good news.

Since Fallout 3 I find the textures to look a lot more illustrated than smooth and realistic like Oblivion. This isn't an issue, but it becomes an issue on the console with smaller things like branches. No AA = YIKES!

Another issue I saw was the hair on the spider! Once again, No AA= YIKES!

When I was watching the gameplay trailer, the hard shadows that the trees and foliage casted took it up to that point where I can say the game looks much better than the last.

The new characters models are my favorite part so far. Well, that and how "alive" the towns appear to be. They were so empty and "unlived in" looking in vanilla Oblivion (of course Better Cities fixed this by a long shot).

Not to mention, Oblivion is a finished product, and Skyrim is still in production. What people forget or are simply ignorant about, is that in order for game development to continue, the usually have to rough things in, and usually right up until the final months of development the game is still going to be full of placeholders. This includes textures, models, and effects, all the stuff your typical negative nancys like to complain about.

I hope you're right. The trailer graphics are awesome IMO, nearly Crysis-level (the first scenes while the char is running, above all), but some other things aren't that great (WATER!!! and maybe also trees foliage).

I don't know how much of placeholding material and how much of final stuff is in the trailer, but there's room for improvement. And I hope (I REALLY hope) that Bethesda doesn't rest on their laurels for the next 8 months.

Oh wow! I find the environments are not THAT big of a difference, but the improvement of character models and buildings is staggering.

Sums up my opinion well.

There are things about Skyrim that are MUCH better than Oblivion... Draw distance is insane, the character models are very much improved, and the towns have tons more detail. Plus, the game looks better in motion. It appears they might have fixed the robot-like animations.

You mean they use actual motion capture now? That plus Havok Behavior for the transitions.

Well I half agree the half that doesn't agree is screaming about the dynamic snow and how realistic it is but yeah overall it is a considerable overhaul.

The character models are definately a big improvement, as well as the architecture, honestly I can see much needed improvements everywhere. The mountains and the environments in general have a grittier harsher look, which to me seems like they took things they learned building the Fallout 3 world, improved on it and applied to Skyrim, the textures seem to be higher res, definately more detail in things like the trolls body hair.

I think Todd's team created an incredible armosphere and environment in FO3, and are in the process of doing the same thing with Skyrim.. To me, the atmosphere in oblivion seemed a little like (for lack of a better term) junior high fantasy, which isn't bad it just didn't quite pull me in like I hoped, and then FO3 was a more (again for lack of a better term) mature, harsh world/atmosphere, which i found very compelling, and it seems that SkyRim is headed the same direction, which as far as I'm concerned is very cool..

Compare the trailers!! Photos can trick the eye.

Just. Compare. The. Trailers.

Oblivion: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c0AmyQJafnU

Skyrim: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PjqsYzBrP-M&feature=related

To me it's freaking obvious. Skyrim looks 5 years better.

There is some solid graphical improvement to be sure, but there should be. Oblivion is almost 5 years old, and wasn't a very good looking game for its time. However, the graphics are not "amazing" or "jaw dropping" by any stretch of the imagination.

With that said graphics don't do anything for me. The game looks fun and seems like its going to have a great atmosphere... which is far more important.

I couldnt disagree with you more that i had to make a post. Oblivion, at least for the pc, was the best game in regards to graphic at the max setting...i belive that only ualf life 2 was just as good.
