Oblivion a step up ?

Post » Thu Apr 07, 2011 7:26 pm

I have accomplished a lot in my time playing Oblivion. but there are so many people in game (NPC) that talk about morrowind. Would it be wise for me to purchase morrowind and play through that as well?? I play on Xbox360 (ask for my GT if you wanna talk about Oblivion).

I would say play it because it is awesome. It is VERY different from Oblivion, so do not go into it expecting it to be as easy to pick up as Oblivion was.

I've been seriously considering doing Morrowwind myself. Right now I've got plenty of game time left in Oblivion tho, so it'll depend on when I feel like I'm done with Oblivion and how that coincides with Skyrim. I do feel like I'd rather move forward in the series than backwards, though, but I've heard a lot of good things about Morrowwind.

It is VERY different from Oblivion,

I disagree, it′s not VERY different. Regarding building up your character it works the same way and that′s a big part. You also have many skills the same, attributes are the same and so on. However it′s not Oblivion 1 either ;)
I would say play it because it is awesome.

THIS I agree with :)

if you guys have not played Morrowind, you have to! i personally think Morrowind is a much better game. it might be hard now, to get past thet graphics difference (obviously Oblivian is superior in that department), but almost everything else about Morrowind is greater. The story is better, there are more skill options, more weapons and armors, and more factions to join, etc.

Bloodmoon was a great expansion as well. I thought it was a blast. There is one quest in bloodmoon where you have a dead warrior (Aeslip) fighting along side you through a dungeon. it's pretty BA. that and the snow prince quest was really good. a lot of great quests really.

You should play Morrowind. I also got the game after I finished Oblivion and I loved it. There are differences in the gameplay, but the story is so much better.
Just dont let the old graphics to stop you. Its true that the game doesnt look so well, but there's a bunch of mods that can fix that.

Yes, because it is made of awesomesauce.
It is without a doubt The best game I have played, ever.

But the start is a lot more difficult that oblivion. you may get frustrated that you dont hit anything and get owned by mudcrabs.
This is because, unlike oblivion, you always deal max damage, but only have a chance to hit, you dont hit every time.

At a long blade level of below 30 this means it is practically useless. The good bit is that training is unlimited, and you can train your longblade (or axe, or dagger, or blunt, or shortblade) to 40 the first chance you get.
Try low lvl spells at the start, you will have more chance casting fire bite than hitting with a blade if destruction is one of your skills, and spells always hit if cast succesfully and connect to the target.

The first few games, dont worry about the main quest, or failing quests, just explore. talk to npc's. find out how the mechanics of the game work. join a guild, a great house.

Dont rush into things. The game is largely unleveled, so at first almost everything you meet will be too strong. stick with things like rats.
Use your skills a bit, find trainers and level up. make a bit of money.
The wonderful thing is that after level 5 you can walk around more comfortably, around level 10 all those things that used to scare you and made you teleport to safety will start to become beatable. around level 40 youre a god.

I hope you enjoy Morrowind.
It is a much harder game to get the hang of than oblivion, but that also means the payoff is much sweeter.

edit: I see people talk about graphics a lot. It is true that they are not that advanced compared to modern standards. But, graphics are the icing on the cake of the game.
What truly matters is that the cake is rich and moist, the icing is a nice touch, but not the main dish. All too often these days developers use exquisite icing to cover up a musty, stale brick.
With Morrowind you will find that the icing is mediocre, but the cake is wonderful.

I think I spent about 4000 hours in 4 years playing Morrowind. I spent only about 1000 hours in 2 years playing Oblivion. In morrowind I played for a year without installing any significant mods, but in Oblivion I went mod heavy already after 1 month.

Oblivion is technologically superior, but Morrowind has more "personality". There is a much stronger sense of a unique and well defined culture. My favourite way of explaining the difference between the two games is the following: in Oblivion you enter a ruin to kill the monsters inside and take their loot, but in Morrowind you enter a ruin to see what is inside.

Also, the Dunmer in morrowind have a 100x more badass voice.

the more we talk about morrowind, the more i want to go back and play it! I played most of the game before i even advanced the story line. there is just so much to do... among them relic hunting, and you can go on an unofficial quest of liberating all the slaves in the game.

i played morrowind on and off for about 4-5 years. in the end my character was so powerfull i could literally hop any where i wanted to go. enchanting was so much better in morrowind!

Morrowind is amazing. It really is.

But you have to be ready to face the old graphics (nothing that a few mods can't improve, though) and a slower gameplay. The game as a whole is more cerebral and deliberate. But the story is ten times better, the environment is intriguing and the atmosphere is so thick you could cut it with a knife. :)

Yes you definitely should, I play on Xbox 360 too and I got Morrowind a few months ago and love it. Get the game of the year edition though, because it is the only way console players like you and me can get the great MW expansions of bloodmoon and tribunal. For me it is pretty slow though and loading screens take forever but if you muscle through that you will have a great time playing it.

Morrowind is the only genuine computer RPG that I have seen. That is, you must role play your character, not rely on your own personal (real life) skills and/or abilities. What matters is what your character is capable of, not what you are capable of. That's what role playing is all about, but other so-called rpgs, even if they are good or excellent in various ways, do not actually focus on role playing, per se (and usually focus on your abilities, not your character's).
